How unusual is it for a historical record in the UK National Archives to have a 75 year closure placed on it ? (more details in text)

I have already done a bit of digging regarding the case, but I thought I would ask you folks this question before I get all ahead of myself looking for a mystery that may not be there (hence the throw away).

Just the facts...

A murder occurred in 1945. In the online National Archive (UK), records relating to the case are classed as 'Closed or retained documents'. They also state that access is 'Closed for 75 years'. The record opening date is 2021.

Is this unusual ?

Does this happen with most murder cases. I had never heard of this case before, which is why it originally piqued my interest.

If it is unusual, I can post some more information and tell you about what I have found so far. If not well, I suppose I can feel all deflated and walk around the house having a mini huff, waiting for 6 years for them to be released.

Many neighboring countries have rivalries (friendly and otherwise), but are there any historical rivals that are separated by large distances?

By "historical rivals" in this case, I mean rivalries stretching back at least 100 years. Something like England and France or Japan and Korea.

When I say "neighbors" I don't necessarily mean the countries share a border, but that they are within the same general geographical vicinity and sphere of influence. I'm wondering if there are rivals that are outside each others' spheres, physically.

What was FDR's opinion on welfare?

His presidency was the start of the New Deal, my understanding is that he set up the basis for the welfare system in the Unites States. My friend and I were talking about this the other day and he mentioned a quote from FDR that sounded to be anti-welfare. I looked up the speech, and he sounds like he passed the New Deal, despite being opposed to the idea of a welfare state. Why did he create the New Deal and what was his long term plan for welfare in the United States?

The quote: "The lessons of history, confirmed by the evidence immediately before me, show conclusively that continued dependence upon relief induces a spiritual and moral disintegration fundamentally destructive to the national fibre. To dole out relief in this way is to administer a narcotic, a subtle destroyer of the human spirit. It is inimical to the dictates of sound policy. It is in violation of the traditions of America. Work must be found for able-bodied but destitute workers."

Middle Eastern Historians - Questions about my possible heritage.

My first question on this subreddit, I hope it falls within the guidelines.

My grandparents and mother were born in an area of Syria known as Golan Heights. They were forced to leave during the 6 day war and immigrated to Canada. The territory remains occupied to this day by Israel. As far as I know, my family had lived on that land for as long as anyone could remember.

My grandparents are part of the Orthodox Christian minority of Syria. They are relatively fair skinned, compared to most Arabs, with dark curly hair. My grandfather has blue eyes. They both have French-sounding names - Georgette and Emile. However, their last names are definitely of levantine origin. They both speak levantine Arabic.

Here is my question, dear historian, and the answer will require some speculation. What are some possibilities for my family history, based on their geographic location, description, names and religion? What historical events might have impacted my ancestors, what empires were they part of, which wars could they have fought? Does proximity to modern Israel possibly give me some Jewish heritage? It's a very open ended Question and again will require some speculation. If this question isn't appropriate for this subreddit, please let me know. I can provide more details if needed.

Thank you :)

Have there been any sculptures of Muhammad? Or other Islamic sculptures? Why or why not?

This link has a collection of various images and depictions of Muhammad, some in Islamic manuscripts, others in Western media. http://www.zombietime.com/mohammed_image_archive/

I also found a link to an impressive figure called the Pisa Griffin: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pisa_Griffin

This got me thinking: Have there been any sculptures of Muhammad or other Islamic holy figures? Is there a tradition of Islamic sculpture, and what does it consist of? If there is not a widespread tradition, what are the reasons for that?

Why were the European countries so technologically advanced compared to all other countries?

Every time you talk about colonies and imperialism the European country always completely decimates the natives almost completely because they had better weapons. How is it that Europe was able to advance so far in terms of technology while the rest of the world made hardly any advancements at all?

Exactly how accurate are the majority of our recorded dates in history once we look past a few hundred years, such as: "April 16th 1457 BC"?

How did we figure these dates out? Is the process always the same? How certain are we that we are correct in these dates? How do we know exactly on what day significant events occurred in ancient history?

That being said, is there any logic behind the idea of a computer programmed to sort through historical documents from around the world to see if there were any errors in proposed dates? For example, if a government document from a certain date failed to meet certain historically relevant parameters set by another historical document known to be from the "same" date. I'm not sure if it makes much sense, but could this be attempted? Has this been attempted? If it hasn't or couldn't, why not? How much room for improvement is there on the accuracy of historical dates anyway?

TL;DR: WAY more questions than asked in my title, if you don't want to answer them, just read the first paragraph or answer the title.

Sources on Native American - Colonial Interactions

Hello AskHistorians,

I'm not sure this is the proper place for this, but I couldn't think of a better and I didn't see anything against it in the subreddit rules, so here goes.

I'm writing my term paper in US history on the changes in Native American Society as a result of European colonization, with an emphasis on the Eastern seaboard, as that's where the American colonies were located. Now, I don't want you to answer the question for me, I just need some help finding sources for it. I've been looking, and while I've found plenty of journals/articles, I'd like to have at least a book or two to reference, and am having trouble with the school resources. If you could just point me in the direction of some good books on this subject, that would be incredibly helpful.

Would the Royal Family of Brazil be the rightfull heir to the Throne of Portugal?

I ask because while the current agreed-upon claimant to the Throne is D. Duarte Pio, he is the great-grandson of King Miguel I, famous for trying to steal the throne from his niece and fighting his brother, being exiled after he lost. His brother was Pedro IV of Portugal and Pedro I of Brazil and the royal family of Portugal continued with his descendants and not the ones of his brother. Had he not become Emperor of Brazil and his son, Pedro II, would've been the King of Portugal.

Basically, wouldn't if make more sense for the descendants of Pedro IV (the royal family of Brazil) to inherit the throne? I ask because I don't see that as a chance considered by basically anyone, so I'm assuming there's a reason for it to make no sense.
