Today:

You know the drill: this is the thread for all your history-related outpourings that are not necessarily questions. Minor questions that you feel don't need or merit their own threads are welcome too. Discovered a great new book, documentary, article or blog? Has your Ph.D. application been successful? Have you made an archaeological discovery in your back yard? Did you find an anecdote about the Doge of Venice telling a joke to Michel Foucault? Tell us all about it.

As usual, moderation in this thread will be relatively non-existent -- jokes, anecdotes and light-hearted banter are welcome.

What do you/historians actually do to get paid?

I've always had a huge interest in history, I've been thinking on trying to become a historian but... what do you actually do? How do you get hired/paid? And for what? I know that there are education career paths but what else, how do you get paid for studying the past? Every reply is greatly appreciated!!

Why do authors leave untranslated sections of text in secondary sources?

I’m currently reading through Yates work on Giordano Bruno and getting somewhat annoyed at how frequently they’ll reference just a section of the quote or just include it as a reference to something they said. There are even footnotes where the only thing included is a sentence or three in Latin alongside the citation. While I have managed to find translations of some of the works mentions but very frequently I have been relying on my cursory knowledge of the language and my short stint in highschool studying Spanish. At the very least my work translating this will go quicker soon as Apple is releasing the ability to pull text directly from a picture so I won’t have to also transcribe the Latin into a translator. Did authors in the past just expect their audience to understand Latin or does this practice still happen today?

What did the process of founding a city look like in Medieval Europe?

Especially before the 14th or 15th century. Was it something that didn't happen much at all, urban centers all growing organically? In this time period and area of the world, were any cities built from a plan without anything, or very much, already standing at the site beforehand?

Thank you in advance.

Have Judaism, Christianity and Islam always been the only Abrahamic religions? Or are they just the only ones that are left?

I was wondering if there were ever any similar faiths based on the same stories/traditions that either died out or were swallowed up by the others.

Did ancient cultures have homogeneous belief systems?

I often see things like “Ancient Egyptians believed…” and same for Ancient Greeks or other civilizations. Did essentially every ordinary person in these civilizations really adhere to the same religious/belief system?

It would be crazy to say “Twenty-first century Americans believe you go to heaven after death,” without further specifying the demographic. Are we exceptionally more diverse than cultures were in the past?

Did the Chinese show any interest in Taiwan before the 17th century?

Reading a bit about Taiwanese history its somewhat odd how the seat of a government that claims to be the rightful government of all of China while also being claimed as an integral part of China by the government that actually controls the mainland seems to have almost accidentally fallen into the Chinese orbit. The goings on with the the Indigenous inhabitants, the Dutch, the Spanish, remnants of the Ming and finally the Qing stamping out the last remaining Ming stronghold over the 17th century are very interesting, but I'm curious about what place the island occupied in the Chinese world before all of this. Despite not being far from the mainland at all I get the impression it was almost entirely ignored, but was there any involvement at all from Chinese dynasties or settlers and merchants who took their own initiative to settle on the island? Like the Mongols were always looking to expand, and the Ming had their famous treasure voyages, did they consider the possibility of expanding into Taiwan?

What Caused The End Of Reconstruction? Could it have survived?

I've read that George Custer had political ambitions and that if he had achieved victories, hoped to run for President of the United States. I know that speculative questions are rejected here, but I want to know if there are any indications from his surviving papers as to what his political positions might've been. I am wondering if George Custer had won at the Little Big Horn and been drafted and swept into the White House, would Reconstruction have ended?

The election of 1876 deserves a lot more attention in our historical memory. It's when the white supremacists finally won the civil war. It seems that shame has caused it to be erased from history, much like the Mexican War.

What were the issues of the election of 1876? What were the various factions that led to the compromise and abandonment of the former slaves?

Where the Hapsbergs aware of the dangers of inbreeding?

I finished reading a book about genetics and it went into details about the messed up family tree of the Hapsbergs and the illnesses they suffered. Were they aware that the illness and the inbreeding were related? Also, how were they viewed by other Royal families? While inbreeding happened in other royal families, did contemporaries see the Hapsbergs as unusually inbred?

Where do historians find trial documents in the middle age?

I can easily think that authors would get copied and/or stored. But where would a historians find a trial, both laical or religious? Except if it concern property. Who found time to store Christophe who feels that his barber gave him a bad treatment especially after 100 or 200 years. Is it in the communal house? Vatican storage? Hidden in the dirt of a buried village?

When did the British recover in ww2?

So I know someone is going to answer, “they never really did” because thats probably true. But what I’m asking is after Dunkirk the British were in no state for a war or even a battle, but when did they actually recover enough to be confident that their Military was once again a competent fighting force? Like was it a couple months afterwards? Or was it not till 44 when the Americans were really ready for war in Europe. Because I know about the North African campaign and the Italian one, but those seem to be more of warm ups and proving grounds for both the British and the Americans. Thank you.

One of the most interesting features of Plato's dialogues is their frequent citations of Homer's epic poems. What sort of fame or authority did Homer's poetry enjoy in Antiquity?

Being a new reader of ancient Greek philosophy, I find myself fascinated by how Plato puts into the mouths of his characters proverbs or quotes that come from either the Illiad or the Odyssey. It is hard not to have the impression that Homer's works were seen as authoritative in some way. What kind of repute did the blind poet's works enjoy in Antiquity, or at least in the era in which Plato lived?

Note: resubmitted due to a typo in the title.

After the fall of the Soviet Union what happened to all the nuclear weapons in the former Soviet countries that went missing?

When the Soviet Union collapsed there were reports and news articles about nuclear weapons going missing and/or being sold over the black market in the former Soviet nations but then there has been no news on the topic since. What happened to them? Was this just hysteria or sensationalized reporting or are there really large amounts of unnacounted for nuclear weapons in Eastern Europe and Central Asia?

Where can I read translations of the Kanesh tablets?

When I went to the British Museum I saw many tablets from form the city of Kanesh

If I remember correctly there were many Assyrian merchants living in Anatolia and they were sending letters to their family living in Kanesh

It was a delightful insight into the lives of regular people in those times and I want to read more of it

I imagine that most of those tablets have been translated by now, so I wonder if there is something similar to to the Ashurbanipal Library Project where one can read translations of all these letters

Or if not, I hope that at least there are papers that include translations of many of these letters, that would also be great

Particularly I know there's a collection of letters that 5 people sent to their parents Pushu-ken and Lamashi, they are mentioned in this youtube video but I want to read the translation of those letters

Previous weeks!

Thursday Reading and Recommendations is intended as bookish free-for-all, for the discussion and recommendation of all books historical, or tangentially so. Suggested topics include, but are by no means limited to:

  • Asking for book recommendations on specific topics or periods of history
  • Newly published books and articles you're dying to read
  • Recent book releases, old book reviews, reading recommendations, or just talking about what you're reading now
  • Historiographical discussions, debates, and disputes
  • ...And so on!

Regular participants in the Thursday threads should just keep doing what they've been doing; newcomers should take notice that this thread is meant for open discussion of history and books, not just anything you like -- we'll have a thread on Friday for that, as usual.

Why did John Lennon's remark of the Beatles being "more popular than Jesus" provoke a massive uproar in the United States that almost destroyed their reputation but on the other hand, received a far more muted response in the UK ?

I've been recently reading a lot about the Beatles along with their history and this episode and the complete polar opposite reactions in both their native Britain and America somewhat intrigued me. They are both Christian majority countries but yet in the UK there was barely any noise about Lennon's statement but the opposite was seen in the United States, where radio stations were calling for a boycott for anything Beatles related and some Southern radio stations proceeding to burn their albums and merchandise in a huge public bonfire. Why was there not a similar reaction in the UK, a fellow Christian dominant country . Was the British more religiously liberal and the Americans more conservative in this regard ?
