Chandler's "The Campaigns of Napoleon" places fairly heavy emphasis on the significance of "lines of communication" for Napoleon and his opponents; what exactly were these methods of communication, and how were they established/secured in a way that made them more efficient than a typical courier system for dispatching orders?

Also a side question, the Vietnam War was a big catalyst for the counterculture movement in the US, in the USSR was the Afghanistan War a potential factor?

I'm trying to help set up a cold war era scenario in Arma 3 for my group called the 48th Mechanized Infantry. http://www.48mi.org/
I would appreciate help finding information to make a fairly authentic scenario involving USA against Russia/USSR.
At this point I'm looking at setting the scenario in the late 80's or sometime in the 90's.
While I do like military related subjects I find that I'm not very knowledgeable, so I'm going to need plenty of information.
Any related information would be useful, but at the moment of starting my research I'm looking for:
What kind of weapons/vehicles would US mechanized infantry be using in this time frame?
How would the weapons be distributed? for example what would a squad have with them?
What kind of squad tactics would be used?
What weapons/armor would Russia/USSR be using?
Information and links are appreciated. I don't mind doing some reading on my own if you have a source that I could use.
Unfortunately it's getting a bit late so I can't think of anymore specific questions. If you have related information that you think I might need feel free to post it. Thanks again for the help!
Also this is my first post for reddit so I'm trying to make the format as easy on the eyes as I can make it.

Why were the Russian people strong enough to fight the Tsar regime when their lives were tough but couldn't take over the totalitarianism of the CCCP? Is it that they weren't as miserable as we've been taught in text books and didn't want to change, or is it that Stalin was too powerful?

Reading a few articles about WW2's Eastern Front, it seems to me that the Soviets always seemed to suffer huge casualties during battles with the Germans. Even during their victorious battles in the later stages of the war, the ratio of casualties never seemed to be in the favor of the Soviets.
Why did this occur? Were Soviet tactics inferior, or were their troops more poorly trained?

Context: My friend and I are having a discussion about military roles in medieval times compared to Fantasy RPGs like Dungeons and Dragons, or Pathfinder.
Edit: I suppose I should clarify now to note I'm primarily interested in the early Medieval period from 400AD to 1000 or so AD, but information about the later Medieval Period would of course be welcome.

I first heard of this in a Radiolab episode and then read up on it a bit afterwards. The more interesting comments seem to suggest that since blue was not at-hand, there was no word for it. And, since there was no word for it, we may not have even recognized the color. This is fascinating to me. Additionally, Krishna and (I think) Vishnu are depicted as blue in Indian ancient texts so does this same phenomenon not occur in India?

Edit - thanks for all the useful feedback!!!!

Many things that are obvious to us aren't so much to earlier humans, do we have any records of this?

I've had a few CFL partisans insist to me that players in the Canadian league were as good or better than those in the NFL up to the sixties. Is there any basis for this? (And if so, could it have something to do with the CFL being more open to African-American "skill position" players?)
