I will be transcribing archival documents/letters from the Victorian America era. While I'm quite familiar with Victorianism in general, I've never had the opportunity to do hands-on archival work before.
Do you historians have any tips on transcribing? Any and all advice is appreciated!

Why did Germany invest so much in a U-boat fleet as opposed to a surface fleet? Was it because the British fleet was just too large? Why did they focus on U-boats while it seems like every other navy had small submarine fleets. Was there a technological edge the Germans had in their U-boats that other nations could not replicate in their submarine fleet?
Are there any good sources on German U-boat theory/ tactics?

Currently watching "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" (John Wayne/John Ford) and the movie, set in 1876, has made references to several former Confederate soldiers serving in the US cavalry, including one former Brigadier General who now serves as a lowly trooper who passes away, being buried with a makeshift Confederate flag that the Union provides! Was this actually common, or a typical Hollywood historical error? The men also seem to not mind serving with former Confederates, even John Wayne's character, a veteran of Sherman's army. Would this also be typical?

I'm looking for recommendations on what book(s) I should look for with regards to this case. Preferably books available online, as I don't live in the US.
What I'm specifically looking for is literature regarding the court deliberations and the arguments put forward by the parties, rhetoric/speeches, the social climate before/during/after the decision, what the judges personally thought, or even biographies of Thurgood or Warren if there are ones with good documentation of the case. Basically I'm not picky, I find the case very interesting but since I'm neither a lawyer nor an historian I'm looking for something that's aimed towards the layperson.
I'd be very grateful for any suggestions. Thanks in advance!

I am thinking about Alexander the great and Genghis khan also. Was it inheritance disputes (the succession war after Alexander died)? The lack of stability due to the rate of expansion? I'm guessing it is a combination of these and more

Those are gigantic differences! So I was wondering how they compare to British figures during the height of the empire.
Another thought, did the Cold War blunt American dominance?

What convinces me the most the methodology with which you work. I have followed two history courses at university level (Introduction to Western civilization and another one on human rights) and my teacher explained the way historians work and the academic way seems to be the most strongest way to develop a good reasoning (whether it's in History or in other fields). But I hardly see myself explaining that to someone from this thread.

The Spanish, Portuguese, Italians, English, etc.. All went to far countries for trading. Famous trade routes to India for specific herbs and spices. How did they communicate with them? Seems important if you give them gold for a certain amount of goods. I just take these as an example but there was a lot of trading back then with foreign people who spoke totally different languages. How did they do it and how did they find the right persons?

Hi, my elderly neighbour is trying to work on the military history of the second world war. The picture I'm linking to below is apparently vital for his work. It's either France or Belgium (he thinks Belgium) in 1945, and he would like to know where it is. I know the grave scene has nothing really to show where it is, but I wondered if the good folk of Reddit might be able to ID the town square? He has tried speaking to the British, Belgian, French and US military but although they've been helpful no one can tell him which town square it is. here are the two photos I'm actually in Belgium myself tomorrow (which is how we got discussing this topic) so can't reply to posts, but I'd love to be able to give him some good news by Christmas / New Year.
