I've noticed over several years that there seems to be no international standard for the way Arabic names are translated into English. Is there a reason for this? Are there standards when translating into other languages? How did Arabic to English translation develop such a unorganized style?

My question is mainly how do people who do not believe in Jesus Christ, reconcile the fact that they live in 2014 AD if BC and AD both refer to the existence of Christ?

Hi! I've spent most of my life not really pursuing a greater understanding of my Jewish heritage, but I've recently become interested in diving deeper into that world, historically speaking. Are there any good recommendations for books about Jewish history? And in addition, any good books specifically dealing with the history of antisemitism? I'm a fairly advanced reader, but I'll admit that anything too dry makes me get bored pretty quickly.

I have been doing family history research, focused on Acadia, the first French colony in the Americas and the people descendant from those settlers. I am looking to expand my knowledge of the history and politics of the time to better understand the migration of people of the period.

I have a particular interest in finding details about the first few voyages between France and the new world, and which individuals stayed behind and why.

Can anyone suggest books on the subject ?

What verifiable sources are there that I can have access to that proves/disproves the existence of Zaytsev?

So far by his own account I notice a few flaws

• The SS were not in Stalingrad

• There are no records that I can find (perhaps it is due to them being in the Deutsche Dienst, the modern equivalent of the Wehrmachtauskunftstelle, and to my knowledge access requires the consent of the family?)

• There are a few flaws in his story that don't add up (directionally, the setting sun would not have been reflected in Konig's lens if he was looking east while Zaytsev was looking west, true to the position of the front relative to the two countries)

• There are no records of any such sniper school in Berlin, something of that nature would surely at least be "google-able"

• Zaytsev, who characteristically gave precise dates and details, could not give details about this particular 'battle'

Given the nature of Stalin's usage of propaganda, I feel this could easily be fabricated in the interest of troop morale. As an example, what is immediately brought to mind is Emily Blunt's role in Edge of Tomorrow.

Stalingrad, the battle Zaytsev was in, is among the debated 'turning points' of the war for the Eastern Front (along with Moscow and Kursk)

I recently read the Letters of Cortes and also The Memoirs of Bernal Diaz del Castillo. I find the subject utterly fascinating and would love to learn more.

I would be interested in reading primary documents as well as more modern history books. Something older like William H. Prescott is also of interest to me.

Finally, materials discussing the culture and history of the period immediately preceding this era on both the Spanish and American side is welcome.

I am writing a college paper analyzing Paul's Epistle to the Romans and can't find a lot of information on how people reacted to his letter.

I understand he promoted many supporters of his whilst in position of General Secretary, and used this when dismissing the original Politburo members. Would these members (that supported Stalin) have been able to vote him out (as previously possible with the other members) or did Stalin create a method to stop this (besides his secret police).
