First question is simple when did Britain "declare war" on the french. Second question is why did Britain go to war with Napoleon? From what I understand Britain was pretty free at the time, a lot more so then the absolute monarchies of Europe that feared the spread of the revolution. So why did Britain go to war?

I know it's not a SUPER FACT HISTORY BOOK and that has a lot of fiction, but althought is one of my favorite books it always bothered me that Robert Graves pictures Augustus as Livia's bitch and not the diplomatic genius I want to think he was. I decide to ask all these questions together so the chance of one of them getting answered is increased, since I think they're all military history questions!
What happened to the javelin? Why don't medieval army foot soldiers carry 1-2 javelins to throw before an engagement like armies of antiquity did? I found this answer, but it doesn't quite answer why it lost popularity. The answer stated that it didn't, but it clearly did lose popularity as depictions of medieval warfare lacked the pervasive javelins of earlier times. Even if the argument is that the bow replaced the function of the javelin, wouldn't it be advantageous to have 100 bowmen and 500 javelin-equipped footsoldiers over 100 bowmen and 500 sitting ducks for enemy ranged weapons?
How did the arquebus and matchlock musket ever replace the crossbow? The crossbow fired with greater range and accuracy. The matchlock musket needed you to keep a slow-burning match constantly lit. Both needed very little training.
Why did dragoons ever dismount? If they bring their horses to a stop they could easily discharge their weapons with a steady hand. Also, before rifled barrels the accuracy of guns were atrocious anyways, so why bother to dismount to fire their guns when they could have the advantage of being more mobile? This one really confuses me, as I envision men using guns on horseback like the mongols used bows, but apparently the dragoons had to be on foot to use their guns? This does not make sense to me.
Whatever happened to War Elephants in the west? I know in India and Southeast Asia they continued to be used, but what change caused their decline in the west? Carthage used War Elephants, and so did the Persian Empire before them. The Hellenistic Kingdoms that succeeded the Persian Empire used them. Then you never hear about them in Middle-East conflicts anymore. The crusaders never encountered war elephants fighting arabs in the holy land. Why did arabs discontinue elephant warfare? I found one record of one elephant "Abul-Abbas", but he was more ceremonial than a beast of war.

Hey there, a few facebook friends shared an article and I can't help but think its total bullshit. It mentions something about white slaves and how they were captive in Barbados. This is the link in question. The website itself is a wordpress blog and understandably looks like trash, but the author cites sources at the bottom and I can't help but wonder if there is any bit of truth to this.

Maybe I've overblown the similarity in my mind, but I find it interesting that both have strong apocalyptic elements about world-ending battle and the devouring of the heavens, etc. Was this noted by people at the time? I would think missionaries could draw on the common themes to help spread Christianity. Or was the story of Ragnarok affected by the introduction of Christian apocalyptic literature?
As a side question, how common is apocalyptic literature, across cultures?

As a side question, I haven't had a chance to read Area 51: An Uncensored History of America's Top Secret Military Base, however it mentioned that the equipment found was really Soviet aircraft. Is there any truth in this?
Any sources that you can point me towards would help. I have had a very difficult time researching this.

Everytime protests against a countrys government start everyone is usually calling for a "peaceful" resolution, but what i recall from recent memory is that the peaceful protests in both Ukraine and Lybia didn't achieve anything, the only reason they succeeded was because it got violent, at least in the case of Ukraine.
But has any peaceful protest actually achieved the overthrown of their respective government?

this is a really small question but I didn't know where else to ask, sorry!
for halloween, i'm making my own costume from hand and I wanted to be Napoleon. i've actually just about done with the jacket but my only question is, how did these things button up? I can see theres a seam in the middle of the chest and so I thought there would be some buttons on the inside that are fastened to hold it together(how I was intending to do it) but I've never seen a painting or picture of one of these undone so I have no idea how they work or how they're positioned .

Specifically, Gordon Wood's Empire of Liberty and Howe's What Hath God Wrought? I'm about halfway through the former and Wood seems markedly sympathetic to the Jeffersonian cause. Enough to make me wonder, not enough to make me question whether he's telling only part of the story. Thank you!

I recently saw the film Kill the Messenger. The movie tells the story of Gary Webb, a journalist who wrote a story in 1996 that alleged that the CIA, in addition to funding the Nicaraguan Contras by indirectly selling arms to Iran, looked the other way while the Contras sold cocaine in LA and alleged that this helped start the crack epidemic of the 1980s.
Basically, I want to ask how substantiated this idea is by modern historians. I am not interested in Gary Webb and his credibility as a journalist or his story, just the historical facts of this claim in the 1980s. I know that the 1990s are currently not allowed for questions, but I hope it's alright as it is about events that transpired in the 1980s.
