I know of at least one news story from the early twentieth century that involved police shooting down a black man under the influence of cocaine (which made it hard to take him down), but I would like to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the historical context surrounding the legislation and how much, if at all, said legislation was influenced by black/white relations.

So the common line is that the US and Israel have always been the closes friends as far as nation-states go. But I'm trying to write a paper on Israel's use of its great power benefactors to become a regional power, and i read somewhere that the US and Israel were pretty estranged until after the Suez Crisis when the US replaced France and Israels sugar daddy. So a couple questions if you don't mind:

1. What was the US stance on Israel at its inception? I imagine the US would try to win the favor of the whole Middle East (gaining foundational regional influence over the Soviets) but when the Soviets won the social favor of anti-imperialist Arabs, the US made an anchor out of Israel.
2. What did Israel's economy look like early on, and how/what did it develop into? Also, what/how did the US aid this (grants, resources, tech-transfers)?
3. When/why did the Soviets lose control of Israel when they were mostly socialist/leftist to begin with? Why did they gravitate to the US?
4. What is Israeli Grand Strategy? What is the Arab geopolitical/social perspective of Israel and, knowing this, how has Israel sought to most effectively cease Arab attacks and harassment?
5. I'm trying to gather an Israeli perspective, so how has partnership with the US helped their country (specific case studies if you have them)?
6. How/has Israel ever manipulated the US and/or other great powers to its advantage?

I'm looking for as much info as possible, so feel free to lay it on. If you have answers or thoughts on one, several, or all of these questions let me know... and I'd love to know some sources. Thank you all so much in advance!

I need to write a research paper for my Eng. 121 class on the American Civil War and Lincoln. I come to you looking for sources. What would be some great places to look for information? I don't know an awful lot about the conflict itself, except for what I've learned from History Channel Documentaries, so any info is good info. Are there any good podcasts, documentaries, books... My teacher has said she will accept any "reliable" source. When I inquired about the Lincoln movie that came out not too long ago with Daniel Day-Lewis, she said that was acceptable, so I wonder how useful that movie is (in terms of accuracy). Thanks a lot for the help!

I read one volume of it, and while it was absolutly fascinating, I noticed that some of his theories are quite outdated. I happen to know a bit about 18th century France, and his analysis sometimes goes against what is the consensus in France now.

So, what are your thoughts/opinions?

I need to interview someone at least two generations older than me about how a period or movement during their life influenced them. I'm not glued to the feminist movement, it was just my first idea for a topic, so if you can help me with another time period that's fine as well :)

Just got done watching Fury, and it was a fantastic movie. There was a scene where a SS battalion on the front marched in step and sang while moving, and it struck me as odd- something that, as a Marine, I know you would never see on any modern army.

I don't really know how accurate Fury is, but it does put on pretenses of being 'authentic', so I'm wondering if this is something that would have been done.

For instance, we still use the meter, etc, and some political changes done by him.

I'm thinking of the 1400's-1600s. Thanks for your input!

I found it to be very entertaining, but I would like to know just how much of a grain of salt to take the information with.

As I have understood it, the renaissance was the transition between the middle ages and the modern world. There was made many advances in many fields, and I feel this is still going on. So why do we then say that it ended in the 17th century

I know they used a form of middle English in a lot of medieval times, but is it enough like modern English to a degree of understanding what they're saying?
