I understand their ability to block legislation was a powerful one, but I'm having trouble understanding why the position became so politically important/powerful as time went on, and especially in the late republic.

I would like to know what new proof/elements/facts support the "official" version and what proof/Elements have proven irrelevant in the long term?

Are they new facts/documents that would make the Warren commission and others enquiries obsoletes nowadays? Or on the contrary new proof of OSwald's role in the murder?

We are currently in the middle of the loss of two well known celebrities (Lauren Bacall and Robin Williams), which reminds me of the myth of celebrities dying in threes. Is there any knowledge of when this myth started and if there was a foundational action to give it accuracy?

I was watching The Pacific and, while I do know a lot about other battles, I have yet to learn more about Peleilu. There was one part where they need to cross the airfield at Peleilu while the Japanese were firing into the American charge. During the charge, there is a cannon in a pillbox and the US Marines call in an airstrike. Why not just do that on the rest of the airfield structures?

I could see not wanting to damage the runways but why not just target the buildings? Why spend lives and possible failure on that?

I'm reading Paul Johnson's A History of the Jews, and one paragraph in particular that discusses the chronology at the time of Abraham is worded in a confusing manner.

It is likely that Abraham left Ur after the time of this king, and so carried within him to Canaan tales of the ziggurat to heaven as well as the much earlier Flood story. When did he make this voyage? Dating the patriarchs is not such a hopeless task as was once supposed. In Genesis, antediluvian datings are, of course, schematic rather than actual but genealogies are not to be despised, any more than the other sources as Manetho, an Egyptian priest who lived in Hellenistic times, c. 250 BC, enable us to date Egyptian history with reasonable confidence as far back as the First Dynasty, 3000, BC. Berossus, a Babylonian priest who corresponds roughly to Manetho, gives us a similar king-list for Mesopotamia, and archaeology has unearthed others. If we examine the lists of ante- and post-diluvian names in Genesis, we find two groups with ten names on each, though the datings vary as between the near-original Hebrew Massoretic text, the Greek Septuagint and the Samaritan Pentateuch. These groupings are akin to lives of the Sumerian kings before the flood at Shuruppak. The earliest king-list gives only eight ante-diluvian kings, but Berossus has ten, fitting the Genesis pattern. The link between the two is perhaps Abraham, who brought the tradition with him.

I'm told that during Abe Lincoln's time that he was a liberal republican. That back then Liberals were mostly republican and conservatives were mostly democrats. Is this true? How, when and why was the change made?

I was reading a book that mentioned the war between Rome and Alba Longa early in it's existence, and how the Romans completely destroyed the city after their victory. Livy writes at the end of the first century, "Every building, public and private, was leveled with the ground. In a single hour the work of four hundred years lay in utter ruin." Although I'm sure this is an exaggeration, how would a conquering army go about razing a city of rock and stone to the ground in the shortest amount of time?

Also, can you recommend me some reading material for the Korean War, Korean history or even Asian history in General? Countries I'm specifically looking to find out more about are China, Japan, Korea, Mongolia and Tibet, but any reading material for Asian history will be greatly appreciated.
