The Spartans were famous for their military culture. Everything in Sparta revolved around war and the military. How long after Sparta's assimilation in Alexander's Empire and its successors did the military no longer become primary in the Spartan people's minds?

I am very confused. From what I understood and had read from multiple sources, I thought the Sea People were a group most likely from Anatolia or Egypt or Phoenicia that invaded Greece and brought about the end of the Mycenaean Era. Now I've been reading that they were Greeks who invaded Egypt? And I read one (most likely not true) source saying they were the original blacks who lived in Italy and Greece, forced out by Etruscans. But that seems entirely untrue

I was reading an askreddit thread about the biggest culture shocks people have witnessed when a Bulgarian reditor said that in Bulgaria, unlike the UK, nodding meant "no", and shaking your head meant "yes." How did moving your head in a certain direction come to mean something, and how did the meanings change from culture to culture?

Basically what the title is asking, there are similar sounding words, like the word for triangle in Japanese and Korean.

I've been reading quite a few Osprey military history books recently (Franco-Prussian War, French Poilu 1914, Fall of Napoleon 1813-1815), and I've been really, really enjoying them, for their limited size, and very in-depth manor.
However I'm a very speculative person, and hate trusting one source, especially since I don't know if there is much controversy surrounding them.
So my question is, what is your experience with the accuracy/respectability of the Osprey military history series?

I was reading "Nazi Gender Policies" by Gisela Bock, in "History of women in the West", and in it she mentions that early on there was some increase in German Women's birthrate, but that it could be attributed mostly to economic recovery, but there wasn't really an extensive review of how State policy affected birthrates, if at all, leaving me a little unclear with the consequences of Nazi Gender policy. So my questions are what were, throughout the years of Nazi rule, the full effects on birthrates and demographics in general of the pronatalist Nazi policies? Was there a significant difference in periods, for example did women in late war years tended to have more or less children that previously? And which of the effects could be attributed to which policy? Also, has sterilization policy negated any of the positive effects on birthrates? Has the number of those deemed "unfit" by the Nazis did decrease in a way that made the "race" more "healthy"?

Reading through Edmund King’s ‘King Stephen’ and was curious if Stephen knew that Matilda was on her way, and if so, why he didn’t do more to prepare for her landing beside put everyone on ‘high alert’?
If the Earl of Gloucester Robert put up resistance in 1138,
“…announced that they came from Robert, earl of Gloucaster, and asked for an audience with the King. What they had to say will have come as no surprise. The earl was defying the king, that is to say he was renouncing the homage and the fealty that he had sworn to him in the spring of 1136.” – King
And Matilda didn’t cross over till September in 1139, couldn’t the King have properly made the ports closed to her and mount a more lasting presence in the region to prevent them from getting into England?
Seems like a rather large oversight on Stephens part.

I see this phrase thrown around a lot, but what exactly does it mean? I've heard the definition of "a nation that can influence other nations", but I get the impression that there is more meaning than that. The second part of my question is what makes a nation a great power? What are the requirements to get this status, basically? For example, what did Sweden do in the 30 years war and Prussia do in the seven years war that gave it the status of great power? Was the term even used to describe a current nation, or is it a historical term?

There was a TIL this morning about the popularity of heavy metal music and culture in Norway, Sweden, and Finland (especially the latter). Is there a historical cause for this popularity?
I realize this may be very close to violating the "20 year rule", so for the sake of this conversation, let's just say I am interested in causes for the popularity that are older than 20 years.

As seen here the Milky Way can be fairly spectacular. Are there any records of what ancient people's thought it was? If it had any special meaning to certain peoples?
Edit: Derp grammar in title.

I understand that during the Cultural Revolution it was common for officials and ordinary people with bad class backgrounds to be beaten or publicly humiliated, and that a great number of people were murdered by the red guards or by their neighbors who took the chance to settle old scores. That being said, the historical record and the popular memory of the Cultural Revolution counts many of the deaths as suicides. Why did so many victims of the Cultural Revolution commit suicide? Do historians think that the suicides were predominantly instances of internalized shame, or a type of political protest from the grave? Or was suicide really the only alternative to being murdered for many of these people?
