During WW2, what did citizens of European countries other than Germany, Poland and neutral countries knew about the Holocaust ?

The FAQ contains similar questions about Germany, Poland and what I'll call "the free world", with the answers being something like "vaguely", "yes" and "yes but quite late". I may have missed one but none of the answer I read addressed the case of other European countries like France (which interests me the most as a French citizen), Italy, Hungary etc.

Edit : the question should be "what if anything".

When did physics come to be considered "elegant"?

Physicists love to imagine their discipline as full of mathematical elegance, to the extent that the beauty of a set of equations can be considered evidence in their favor. When did this happen? Were simple equations always considered the sine qua non of physical science (or at least, natural philosophy)? On a related note, did mathematization of science occur suddenly, gradually, or was it always there in the background?

Irish Government Plans in Case of British Evacuation of Northern Ireland.

When the Troubles flared back to life in the late sixties and early seventies, did the Irish government have any plans to deal with either a sudden British withdrawal from Northern Ireland or a dissolution of civic authority there?

The Jesus Myth: Someone care to explain?

I recently watched both Zeitgeist and Religulous. Both works talk about how attributes of Jesus parallel attributes of pre-existing deities (The Egyptian god Horus, the Persian god Mithras, the Roman god Dionysis, at al.). Really I'd like to know more about this theory and be pointed to some scholarly works that cover it. Thanks in advance.

How Self-Sufficient was the Medieval Icelandic Economy?

I was listening to the In Our Time podcast on the Icelandic Sagas, and got to thinking about the medieval Icelandic economy. Iceland just doesn't seem like a particularly productive landscape. While they probably had no shortages of wool, leather, or stone, it seems to be short of both the ability to cultivate a main staple starch and of wood. Was this the case in the medieval (warmer?) period? Were they reliant on wood or grain from Norway or elsewhere? What about minerals? Could Icelanders produce their own iron weapons and tools, or did those have to be imported?

Why were the cities of Nagasaki and Hiroshima picked for dropping the nukes?

I understand that I am by no means an expert. I am serious curious about this:

In my own research and studies, I have been unable to find good reason for the US to choose these two cities. A major symbol of Japan is Mt. Fuji. I have thought that if the US had made a more symbolic nuking of Mt. Fuji, it would break Japan's pride and scare them. It seems out of character for the US to pick two cities filled with civilians.

Am I wrong?

Hello /r/AskHistorians! Question on the history of Germany's and Japan's Military.

Since I was about 7 my father told that Germany and Japan couldn't rearmament their militarizes. He said that Germany and Japan couldn't because of treaties with the USA only. I got interested again and have looked for this. I have found nothing along this line. I've uncovered that Germany started a rearming of their military back in January and Japan is only limited to it's constitution. Some one set me straight on this once and for all, please. Thank you.

Modern Britain - recommendations of general narratives, specialized works, historiography, etc.

Hello all,

this thread is birthed out of a message I sent to /u/agentdcf asking about some recommendations of general works covering the period of British history from the start of the reign of the Hanovers to the present day (1714-present). Feel free to post recommendations for any work covering any aspect of history during that period. The reason for my inquiry is that I took both Medieval and Early Modern Britain classes as an undergrad, but never got the opportunity to be able to take a Modern Britain course. However, I would still love to study it on my own, as I have a genuine interest in the field. I am particularly interested in Britain during the late Victorian, Edwardian, and WWI periods, with a special look at British overseas territories. I am also interested in studying the decline in influence of the British aristocracy after WWI. Any recommendations you all have for me to study would be highly appreciated. Thanks!

From what I have read, it seems like most of the violence was carried out by anarchist militias on the Republican side. Is this correct?

Is there any evidence that the British during the early-to-middle 20th century were as polite as the stereotypes suggest?

Did any travellers or people of note every write down why they thought The British were held in high esteem as regard to manners more so than other peoples? So far I have only found this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/7843154.stm ''A behavioural economist says data suggests Britons in that era were more inclined to be "gentlemanly" while Americans were more "individualist".''
