When did American and Mexican relations stabilize?

After the Mexican-American War, Mexico was obviously extremely angry at the U.S. for taking about a third of their land. Now, however, the two countries are awfully friendly towards one another. So when did Mexico "forgive" the U.S?

What practical purpose did saloon doors serve?

I brought this up at a party a few years ago. My friends and I still can't come to a good consensus. Did they offer any protection at all? Did they lock? Why even have a door there at all? Were they as prevalent as they seem to be in films?

I apologise if this isn't allowed here - I read the rules and they weren't clear - but we're in a pub in Kent and no one, not even the landlady, knows what is happening in this photo.

Can anyone identify the key figure(s), and fill in the context of when and what the parade is for?

I think it's Ramsgate, if that helps, and my reckoning is that it's a WWI victory parade. I'm happy to be shown wrong though!

Primary sources on the Soviet Navy during WWII

I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this.

I'm doing some research on the WWII-era Soviet navy, and so far I've been unable to find any primary sources.

Are there any I could use? If there are, what are they, or how can I find them?

Islam and Science

I've been going through the previous topics on this subreddit concerning this and this one in particular stood out to me. Was hoping if I could ask more concerning this.

I know that science was highly revered during the "Golden Age of Islam" but was there much vocal opposition by the conservative segments of the Muslim faith? Even though "seeking knowledge" was encouraged, were there any particular Muslim sects/groups that considered it un-Islamic?

Secondly, as far as science is concerned (not philosophy mind you), just how much did Muslim scientists borrow from older civilizations and built upon that knowledge? How many original discoveries can be attributed to just them? Furthermore, I was talking with a friend today who argued that the first modern hospital traces it's origin back from this period and I wasn't sure just how reliable this is even though I googled it a bit. Wanted to gain some clarification on this and any further sources that the kind folks here could recommend on the topic of science and Islam.

Thanks

In Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth takes a tour of Pemberley and other country houses. Were most English country houses open for tours or was that rare? Would they only be open to peers or gentry, or could anyone take a tour?

I've become fascinated with the running of the large houses in England after discovering Downton Abby. As a result, I'm more interested in the early 20th century than Austen's time, but any information is welcome! Also, suggestions for further reading / study would be much appreciated.

Certain cultures, such as Kurds, Albanians, and Afghans, are not attested to in any written sources until the middle ages. Why is this?

Presumably, Kurds, Albanians, and Afghans lived in the area since far earlier than the 14th century or thereabouts. Is it purely coincidence that all these cultures are Indo-European?

Did the blackout during WWII in Britain actually save lives?

So I am watching 1940 house and they mention something I hadn't really considered - the blackout meant a lot more traffic accidents. Given that bombs at the time weren't very accurate, did the blackout even save lives?

How did mail work in the 1500s/1600s?

I looked in the FAQ for this but didn't find anything, although I suspect this has probably been asked before. My apologies if it has.

How did mail work in the 1500s/1600s? I'm reading a book about the creation of the King James Bible, and in part of it the author mentions in passing about how one member of the English nobility (who had gone on an international tour of Europe) continued to write letters and mail them to his friends abroad (Italy, France, etc.).

My assumption is that the mail was primarily carried either via boat or horseback to the destination town, but how did it work from there?

  1. Whose job was it to deliver the letter?
  2. How did the person delivering the letter know where to take it? I know that, for example, London had street names so obviously they had addresses -- right?
  3. What would happen if the letter was undeliverable?
  4. How much would it likely have cost to mail a letter from, say, London to Rome? I realize it is likely difficult to say exactly what the cost would be, but perhaps a general idea ("a lot," or "a little," or some approximation like that).
  5. How long would it generally take to be delivered?
  6. How common was international mail in that era?

Thanks!

Ancient Roman hamburger wraps.

I saw on a documentary recently that the Romans had a kind of fast-food that involved seasoned ground meat, cooked on a hot surface then wrapped in a pita bread. Sold from a little stand / alcove shop as a quick bite to eat for workers, etc.

I'm curious as to the typical seasonings that would've been available to the cooks of the time. Additionally would the meat have come from cows or is there another meat animal they would've butchered?

Finally, was this a wide-spread practice or more a local thing for specific Roman cities?

Did the Emergency Banking Act of March 9, 1933 really dissolve the United States?

Someone on the bus was talking in detail about how the United States is owned by Germany and somesuch and how we're all doomed...but I'm curious about the implications of a quote here ( http://www.afn.org/~govern/bankruptcy.html ), namely the following:

"It is an established fact that the United States Federal Government has been dissolved by the Emergency Banking Act... [the] Joint Resolution To Suspend The Gold Standard and Abrogate The Gold Clause dissolved the Sovereign Authority of the United States and the official capacities of all United States Governmental Offices, Officers, and Departments and is further evidence that the United States Federal Government exists today in name only."

I read the joint resolution (at http://www.educationcenter2000.com/legal/HJR_192_73rdCongress.html) and couldn't quite piece things together. Was the speaker exaggerating the effects of the move away from the gold standard? Am I missing some history here?

Are there any writings attributed directly to King Solomon?

I know the Bible isn't exactly a goldmine of historical/scientific knowledge, but King Solomon is attributed to be extremely wise, and much is written ABOUT him.

But I haven't seen anything written BY him, or quoted as his words.

Do we have any documents from him?

Why didn't the Roman Catholic church fully defend Constantinople in 1453?

I'm aware of the mistrust between the two churches, including problems during the Crusades, but surely the Pope was aware of the mortal danger of Ottoman incursion into Europe? He issued statements and such, but failed to rally meaningful support for the Byzantines. Why?

Why is preserving (literal) tons of Roman Lead so important?

Roman lead is of vital importance in physics because of its low radioactivity. Social Scientists also value finds of shipwrecked cargo. Historians/Archaeologists object to the smelting of recovered Roman lead ingots for their historical significance. This has led to conflict over the scientific uses of said lead. I don't understand why the historians can't just fully document the artifacts with detailed scans and measurements and then release them with no loss of knowledge.

I understand how discoveries of ancient Roman ingots are important finds for the understanding of the Roman Empire, but shouldn't it be possible to fully scan and analyze any discovered Roman lead, archive some fragments, and then purpose them for physics. The renderings and samples could be leisurely analyzed while still allowing the majority of the found lead to be used in physics.

What is the rationale for keeping 100s of kg of lead, instead of just a few choice samples, locked away in museums?
