In the movie "The Patriot" there's a scene where Mel Gibson ambushes and kills 22 British Regulars. How would a British patrol actually respond to being ambushed?

Link to the scene in question.

In the movie, the British sort of stand around and fire in a somewhat uncoordinated fashion at the ambushers.

What was the actual doctrine for responding to a situation where a British patrol is being ambushed from the flanks by a numerically inferior but well concealed and entrenched enemies?

How accurate is this documentary on Julius Caesar? Can you confirm or deny any of it's claims?

This is the video in question: http://youtu.be/QBmVwiOQI20

Some specifics I was wondering about if you don't want to watch the whole thing (don't blame you).

  1. They claim that in Caesars final siege in Gaul that the Gauls sent their women and children out of their fort for Caesar to let into the countryside, however, I was under the impression that Caesar would've needed to feed the civilians and didn't have the food to do it. Which is true?

  2. The story of Mark Antony offering Caesar the crown trice is brought up and that it was a PR stunt by Caesar. Did this actually happen? I have always thought this was an invention of Shakespeare.

  3. It is insinuated that Caesar became infected by a parasitic worm in Egypt that caused his epilepsy and made him insane. Is there any evidence supporting this? Was Caesar mad at the end of his life?

  4. It is claimed that Caesar's, "conquest of Gaul" is self-promoting propaganda and mostly made up of lies in order to support his bid for power. Obviously some of his intention was self-promotion, but how accurate is Caesar's writings at deprecating truth?

Sorry for the multi-question, feel free to only answer one or another. Thanks in advance.

If "History is written by the victors" then how can modern historians ever be sure they're right?

Title says it all but I'd like to add that even with cameras, diaries etc. I don't believe they provide the full picture. A journal is written from the point of view and knowledge of only one person who outside their "small world" don't know whats going on. Same with cameras a skilled photographer can take an image at a certain angle or have the image cropped. showing things in a different light.

Why didn't the Nazis use WMD's like tabun and sarin during WW2?

Wouldn't dropping these chemical weapons payloads like during the bombing of Britain have had a more desirable effect for them? They used chemicals efficiently to kill prisoners and in concentration camps but did not use them in warfare? It doesn't make sense please explain.

Is there such a thing as an occult historian?

And if so, how do I become one? I've always had a fastination with the history of witchcraft, demonology, monsters, and how these stories and creatures came to be in many different cultures. I'm trying to figure out what I should go back to school for and I'm a history nut, but this area definitely piques my interest.

When did Barbell/Olympic style weightlifting become the mainstream norm? I'm especially interested in 20th century fitness history.

My understanding is the calisthenics/gymnastics style weight training was much more common near the beginning of the century. My question, what did the cultural fitness transition to bench/squat/deadlift look like? Did it have to do with the rise of Bodybuilding as a mainstream discipline? Arnold in the movies? Infomercials? Rocky style training montages? Or am I wrong, and weights were always the 'every man's' understanding of what getting strong would look like?

I suppose the core of my question, has to the do with the evolution of cultural perceptions of what fitness 'looked' like, and what kind of apparatus/exercises you might see if you went to a place where people were training in 1914, vs 2014. I realize this is a very broad topic, but if you can even point me towards some resources that could possibly help me refine my question, I'd appreciate it.

What is the largest thing about history that turns people off about it? What is the most common misconception that people have about history as a subject, the making of historiography, and the historian profession?

I've had trouble figuring out whether it is an appropriate question to ask in this sub. It concerns history as a subject and a profession, but the answers will probably be anecdotal.

As a teacher/professor/historian, what is the biggest gripe that students/colleagues have about learning history? What makes people inclined to devalue history, but not mathematics? What are the biggest gaps in understanding for people learning about history and its practice?

I've been wanting to start a program at my school to do something about this problem, but I want to hear more input first.

When was the last heresy trial held by the Roman Catholic Church?

The most cursory possible search (ie. I went on Wikipedia) states that the last execution for heresy in the nineteenth-century. Was this the last heresy trial (successful or not) or did the practice continue into the twentieth-century?

Extra Credit: What were the theological or liturgical developments to combat (or explain) the proliferation of Christian heresies post-Reformation?

I restrict this to the heresies trials held by the unam, sanctam, catholicam et apostolicam Ecclesiam or bodies pertaining!

Whistling Stagehands

One of the many things that is considered bad luck in a theater is whistling, supposedly because many early stagehands were sailors who used whistled signals to communicate. Does anyone know of an original source that might confirm this? And if it is true, are there any examples of what it sounded like?

Did transatlantic steamship travelers in days of yore get "ship-lag"?

We all know about jet lag due to the rapid change in time zones vs. our natural body clocks associated with air travel, but what about the somewhat slower transition when travelling by ship? It seems like a fast transatlantic steamship passage would still be quick enough to mess with your internal rhythms.

Are there many references to this phenomenon in the literature/letters/etc of the day? How did people deal with it? Did "ship time" adjust regularly during the voyage or all at once on arrival?

I was listening to Hardcore History today and a reference to troop ships coming from North America made me wonder this...

Thanks!
