How does studying history (particularly military history) affect your personal opinions?

Personally, the more i study history and try to be neutral and fair to all sides, the more neutral I become in my own political and philosophical beliefs. In my personal opinion, you begin to see that everyone is a d*ck and that no atrocity or war is justifiable. And if you are to justify one atrocity or war, then you begin a slippery slope of accepting the ones that were thought to be unacceptable only a few centuries ago. I believe that if you have people who revere and can maybe even justify the acts of Napoleon, Hannibal, Alexander and (maybe) Genghis Khan, we will see people who do the same for Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich in a few centuries.

What are your thoughts? How does the study of history affect your personal political and philosophical views?

Why did all WWI and II airplanes have the same basic design? Was the design of airplanes well known before WWI?

I've gotten really into War Thunder (a WWII air combat game), and I started to realize just how...similar all the aircraft are. Think about it:

Engines in front. Airfoil design. Interrupter gear (to allow bullets to fire through the propeller). Three control surfaces. Flaps to adjust the aerodynamics of the wing. Retractable landing gear. Cockpit mostly over the wing. The wing being one piece (so the plane is more of a body attached to a wing, not wings attached to a body). Gun sights. Similar types of gauges. Semi-similar construction. All the planes almost look like they came from a common ancestor, which I imagine was the wright brothers.

So, was the design of the plane well known and distributed everywhere before WWI, and then evolved to fit the needs of the fighters in WWII? Or is this an example of converging evolution, where multiple different people independently discovered how to fly and design aircraft?

Side note: I know that there were MAJOR differences in some aircraft. Take the P-47 Thunderbolt (Jug) and the A6M2 Reisen (Zero). The Jug was armored to hell and had amazing firepower, but couldn't turn worth a damn. The Zero, on the other hand, was super maneuverable, but if you looked at it wrong it exploded. I'm talking about the general design of the aircraft...the wings, tail, etc.

How secret was the Manhattan Project?

I have read stories that it was so hush hush that people didn't know what they were working on till after the bombs dropped and they read it in the papers. I have also read that it was infiltrated by spys who took everything but the kitchen sink back, knowledge wise, back to their government. So who knew?

Was Knights Templars' treasure really only their assets?

There is Polish guide/custiodian of Chojnik Castle, Andrzej Ciosański, who has popular in Poland series of "lectures" about history. He has made several claims that were new to me, but in last one he stated, that treasure of Order of the Knights Templar was nonexistent as majority of their wealth came from their assets, debtors especially. How much of it is true?

For reference - claim (warning - in Polish)

The Ancient Egyptian word 'nefer' and the Christian cross look strikingly similar (if not identical) and both symbolize goodness & beauty. Any connection?

The Ancient Egyptian hieroglyph for the word nefer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nefer) has a striking resemblance to the Christian 't' cross. Is there any sort of connection between the two?

Surely it isn't a coincidence that this Ancient Egyptian sign reappeared thousands of years later as a symbol with similar meaning (goodness, beauty).

When did the corporate ladder structure we're familiar with today (For example: C level executives -> Junior executives -> Vice Presidents -> Directors -> Managers -> Staff) become standard in Western businesses?

Some additional thoughts:
-> Would it be possible for someone in the early 1800's to climb the corporate ladder?
-> Was it possible for a person with humble beginnings to work their way up to the top without starting their own business?

Edited the format

Was the colonial tactic of "stand in a line and shoot" really the best tactic for war, or the product of not knowing how to best use guns?

It just seems insane to me that people would line up and shoot at people so close. How did they get people to stand there and do it? Why not drop to the ground after firing to reload?

When did this change? Were armies decimated when the change happened, but only on one side?

In Civilization 5 Poland has Solidarity as it's national trait. Is this their trait through most of Polish History?

I know that Poland is about 1000 years old and it wasn't on the map for hundreds of years.

But the Solidarity is a political party created in the communist age to oppose the government, so why is it made into a major trait of Poland?

Solidarity gives you more government options, is this realistic? Have the ancient kings of Poland been more flexible?
