Okay I just watched this, and John Green claims that the Crusades didn't really open up lines of contacts between the Muslim and Christian worlds because those lines of contacts were already open. How true is this?

I know that by matching the hieroglyphs to the other languages depicted on the Rosetta stone we were able to finally make huge headway in a complete understanding of ancient Egyptian language. My question just boils down to where would we be if there was no Rosetta stone?

I've seen this in games/movies and it always looks badass.

I've heard a lot of talk about the Catholic Church regulating sex positions, claiming that any position aside from the Missionary was considered "unnatural". I know there were myths in the Roman era about pregnancy only occurring in the missionary position, but I cannot find any reliable sources on the Medieval Church's position. In fact, the only period writings on sex positions I've been able to find are from the 15th century and all mention 5 sex positions, with no moral mention of either.
Is this an unverified myth or are there sources on this? All sources I've seen are amateur ones.

Forgive me if this question is too political for a history sub.

Why did the United States protest the 1980s Olympics? Were there other reasons for the Russians for creating the Friendship Games other than being upset that the US had protested them the previously?

How did the Roman government regard Greece and Greek culture? Good or bad? I have a couple of specific questions because I realize that this might be a too broad topic.
What happened with the Greek religion? Did the Roman religion become dominant or did they blend. In that case how?
What was the situation of the Greek language in ancient Rome? More specifically, did Greek spread within Rome or did Latin overtake Greek in former hellenic colonies. An area which I am particularly interested in is in the eastern Mediterranean. Did Greek spread here during the Roman conquests in Anatolia?
How was Greek litterature regarded by the Romans? Especially among intellectuals.
Did the Rome overtake Greece's interests in philosophy and science?

I was reading about 'ultraconserved' words that are thought to date back to the Ice Age. Are there any learned behaviors (that aren't necessary for survival, i.e. hunting) that are theorized to be as similarly old?

In the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan, a priest wearing military gear and a helmet with a cross on it is shown giving a dying soldier his Last Rites.
Were these priests actually part of the military like medics were, or were they civilians along the lines of combat photographers?

With lots of EU stuff on debate right now this is quite interesting.
I believe two recent incidences occurred, once in WW2 after the fall of France which was suggested by Churchill and stopped after the French surrendered. Secondly in the 1950s with the French president privately suggesting this to the PM.
Was there any real basis to this?

I am not trying to ask what would have happen had Mary I had a child, because that is unknowable. Instead, I am asking about what people in England and Spain at the time expected to happen if the marriage was to produce children.
It would cast a different light on Spanish Armada if the English nobility was expecting to enter into a personal union with Spain just a few years before!

I've been studying the emergence of political Islam and its various stages, such as the start of Wahhabi Islam and the influence of people like al-Afghani and al-Mawdudi. Yet apart from seeing that some of these figures had Sufi ancestry I have not heard anything about what kind of impact Sufi'ism had on Islamic history or whether there were any prominent and influential Sufi figures throughout Islamic history

I read an article on how the ancient Egyptians were 90% vegetarian, but the research was based on the examination of mummies. This is very recent research (which, according to the subreddit's rules, I'm not allowed to ask a question about) but the article also stated that it had long been suspected that their diet was mostly plant-based. Does anyone here know what these earlier suspicions were based on? Because, since the poor were never mummified, research on mummies can only give us evidence on the diet of rich ancient Egyptians. What are some other ways to learn about the diet of a people that lived so long ago?

I recently bought a replica of a phonograph with the big distinct horn and I've been reading up on the phonograph and gramophone, but I haven't been able to find out why the the horn part was discontinued. In addition, thank you!
