Why does gambling in the US mostly revolve around casinos while in Western Europe it mostly involves betting shops?

I've lived in the US, France, and Ireland. In France and Ireland, you see little shops on the street all the time where you can bet on sporting events, and sports gambling is a huge part of sporting culture, while in the US, though people still do bet on sporting events, it's not as pervasive.

I know that many forms of gambling are common in both places, but I'm wondering what caused the difference.

If the Ancient Roman combat formation was so effective during its time, why was it abandoned during the Medieval era?

Why was the tight, shield to shield style that was employed so successfully abandoned later on after the Empire fell?

Before Mao took over China in 1949 Shanghai was a completely open port where passports were not even needed to immigrate. How common was this kind of open port at this time and throughout modern history?

Supplemental; When and where did passports and the current notion of protected boarders originate? I know for example a Roman boarder was relatively porous unless they were engaged in war with the neighbor that shares the boarder but boarders and immigration today tends to be more regulated and a more important factor of national sovereignty.

Did Hitler see the Munch agreement of 1938 (the infamous 'appeasement' by British PM Chamberlin) as a failure?

"In 1938 Hitler thought that he had with great care laid the groundwork for the first of his wars. Czechoslovakia would be destroyed in a war.... Once tricked into negotiations by British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, Hitler tried desperately to extricate himself; but then at the last moment funked at war when confronted by the doubts of his own people and advisors, / the warning of war with England and France, the reluctance of Mussolini, and the hesitation of Hungary. Reluctantly he settled for his ostens ible aims rather than his real ambition; that is to say, he took the portions of Czechoslovakia adjacent to Germany and inhabited predominantly by Germans, but he refrained from the war to destroy Czechoslovakia and seize most of the country as he had originally intended. While others thought of the Munich agreement of 1938 as a sign of German triumph and as a symbol of weak-kneed acquiescence in aggression, Hitler looked on it as a terrible disappointment then and as the greatest error of his career later." Weinberg, World At Arms, pg 27-28.

Weinberg's view puts a different spin on the "Munich analogy" that is used so often in foreign policy discussion.

Is how the bible is written now how books / text was written in that time?

I'm not trying to start any kind of religious battle at all, I'm seriously wondering:

the bible we have today is written in verse/prose style. Was that how other documents of the time were also written?

Per historical information I have seen, the writing of the bible / new testament wasn't done until approximately 100ad (or later); was the bible originally written in that way, or was it formatted by later scribes?

Transition to Democracy: Ancient Greece

Hello Historians!

I was wondering what was going on in Ancient Greece before democracy, what happened leading up to the democratic shift and ideas that we still hold true today.

What the political implications were, the social and economic problems of the time were and possibly opposition from the elites (and their response to the shift).

I hope this isn't too many questions, this subreddit has definitely got the knowledge!
