Is it Joan of Arc or Jeanne d'Arc?

If her name in french was Jeanne why do we still call her Joan? Is it merely an anglicization of her name? If so how come it's not popular to call Leonardo da Vinci: Leo of Vinci? I there a historical reason or is it arbitrary?

Did the United States government ever employ slave labour?

Not personally (e.g., Jefferson owning multiple slaves) but were there ever slaves considered "property of the United States government" and used for public works projects such as railroads, shipbuilding, etc?

Just out of curiosity. I was wondering if America's anti-drug policies during the Cold War were in response to a Soviet attitude.

How bald was Charlemagne's grandson Charles the Bald?

Are we talking a Mr Clean look or just a high forehead? Somewhere in between? 'The Bald' seems like a rather odd (almost insulting) name for a powerful king.

What are the best books about important historical events aimed specifically towards middle/high school his5ory enthusiasts?

My 10 yr old boy is interested in World History far more than I ever was at his age.. someone recommended A Little History of the World.

I did a little background reading on the title and it seems to be a winner. I thought I attempt to find other simplified material.

Any recommendations are greatly appreciated, thanks

What's a good book to read after The Boston Massacre?

So, I just finished reading The Boston Massacre by Hiller Zobel (which I think was recommended by someone on AskHistorians). I thought it was a really great and detailed examination of attitudes and events in colonial Boston. Is there any book that will take me the rest of the way from around 1770 up through the revolutionary war?

How was asthma treated in the early 20th century?

Don't know if this should be a question for Ask Science or Ask Historians but I thought I'd give this sub a try first. How was asthma treated in young patients (5-18yrs) from 1900 to 1930? Did treatments vary depending on country or socio-economic status? Was there any stigma for children with asthma? Were there any medical advancements of note during that time period? When did use of an inhaler (like what is used by children and adolescents today) become common?

I'm asking because I had an ancestor who suffered from asthma who was a kid and young adult during or around that time. It got me curious about how she might have dealt with it growing up.

Obviously guns and more specifically automatic guns make it a lot easier. But are we just drawn to these events because of the obvious extreme tragedy, or because they are something new?

Is it true that Richard J. Daley, the mayor of Chicago, was almost singlehandedly responsible for the election of John F. Kennedy as POTUS in 1960?

As a lifelong Chicagoan, I've heard plenty of anecdotes about the strong political clout of Mayor Daley on more than one occasion. Anyone who can set the record straight?

More broadly, what role did the Chicago machine play in national politics during the 1950's, 1960s and 1970s?
