I recently discovered through an ancestry website conducted by my grandparents that I have an ancestor born in Amrum, North Frisian Islands, Germany in 1829 and died in Xiamen China in April 1864. Initially I had thought that since the Frisian peoples were noted sailors and Xiamen is a coastal city that he had likely died at sea. However, I also see that the Taiping Rebellion was occurring in China at this time. In my rudimentary reading I see that the rebellion had something to do with Christianity. My ancestors were certainly heavily Christian. Is it more likely he perished at sea? Or trying to spread Christianity in China? What other possible explanations are there? What did China look like during this time in it’s history? Why would a German man be in China during this time in history? Thank you!

What was relationship between the HRE and the Byzantine Empire?
How did the two nations deal with two emperors claiming to be Roman?
Exactly how much of an impact did the fall of Rome have on Europe? Did any nations attempt to replicate the Romans?
Thank you!

Hello all, its my first post on this subreddit and It is actually in relation to another post on here, there was some speculation by u/Grimjestor some 6 years ago about the alleged relationship that christianity had with norse mythology. Specifically the discussion was centred around wether the Eddas were written by christians and wether as a result their was some bias and Christianisation of taking place (according to the thread the answer is yes-ish) I was just wondering if anyone had any reliable sources to back that information up as I want to use it in an essay but pesky high schools haunt adopted reddit as a reliable source of info yet...
Any help is super appreciated thank you in advance.

The countries surrounding Vietnam (Laos, Cambodia)have writing systems with the Pallava script as their ancestor, while Vietnam, prior to adopting a Latin alphabet used Chinese characters. Why were Chinese characters used instead of a Pallava derived writing method?

I’ve been reading a bit about the Khmer Rouge and I’m getting an impression that it was more of a revolution by committee than what we think of with other communist dictators like Mao and Stalin. It seems like things were way more decentralized and I don’t think I’ve seen any evidence of a cult of personality? Does our idea of pol pot taint the lessons we could learn for how so many chose to massacre their fellow countrymen? Was he a scapegoat for other perpetrators to help the country heal?
Was he the architect of genocide or just the project overseer?

I have a fond memory of reading, in a history of science class, excerpts of Pliny the Elder's natural history, which is entertaining to the modern reader. I particularly remembered this passage on apes:
The different kinds of apes, which approach the nearest to the human figure, are distinguished from each other by the tail. Their shrewdness is quite wonderful. It is said that, imitating the hunters, they will besmear themselves with bird-lime, and put their feet into the shoes, which, as so many snares, have been prepared for them. Mucianus says, that they have even played at chess, having, by practice, learned to distinguish the different pieces, which are made of wax.
I was thinking about this lately while I was playing chess myself and reflecting that, from what I know, even the Indian predecessors of modern international chess were hundreds of years in Pliny's future. What game was Pliny referring to?

I haven’t seen many threads on this guy during my years lurking rAskHistorians. He has a reputation for being a very skilled general, but I remember years ago being on some (not as well-vetted as r/askhistorians) message board seeing someone claim that Tadakatsu was, in actuality, probably a very middling general who fought in battles he already had an advantage in, and also benefited from “Tokugawa bias” - would that be more accurate to say? Or did he “meet the hype”?
Thanks!

American units being segregated is quite well-known, but how would a black or Asian man signing up to the British, Canadian or ANZAC forces be treated? Were there all-black divisions, or would they serve with white soldiers? Could they serve in combat roles?

I recently started listening to the podcast Behind the Bastards, and in the first episode I listened to (The Business Plot), the hosts claim that Prescott Bush provided funding for a cabal of Wall Street investors who wanted to create a fascist shadow state in America. It even goes on to say that due to Bush's financial involvements in Nazi Germany, Bush was positioned by this group as the liason between their potential shadow state and the state of Nazi Germany.
While I can find a good deal of evidence for the "Business Plot" as a whole, and other aspects of how this podcast told and represented the story, this seems a sticking point. It seems they got the idea from an attorney named Scott Horton, who wrote out a lot of what BtB later reported as fact in his 2007 article 1934: The Plot Against America. A contributor on Wikipedia claims, without source itself, that "no evidence from the source material of the congressional report, or from news reports at the time, make any mention of Bush's involvement."
Is this true? I'm finding difficulty verifying this one way or the other. Is there a location where such news reports, Smedley Butler's writings, and the congressional report are archived?
Another link is Prescott Bush's financial interests. This 2004 article pointed out documents showing that Prescott Bush was a director and shareholder of a number of companies involved with Thyssen, the German steel magnate. Herbert Parmet is a historian who acknowledges the several financial ties between Prescott Bush and Nazi Germany, but concludes that Bush was not a Nazi sympathizer in ideology, but merely a capitalist who wasn't very discriminating in how he would make it (though that, of course, is worthy of its own criticism).
Is there any links that show this connection with Nazi interests went beyond a financial nature?

How was the continuation of the Holy Roman Empire justifiable without an emperor attached to it? Was it the plan of Hitler to crown an emperor (maybe himself) after the war is over? Or was the emperor already formally abolished?

Hello,
I am wondering about the different names that countries had for the Second World War otherwise known as WW2. I know that many former Soviet countries refer to the war as the Great Patriotic War, Are there any more examples of differing names for the war? What did the Germans or Japanese refer to the war as? I am also interested in the evolution of these names from the time of the conflict to post-war thank you.

Hi Mighty Reddit,
I’m looking for specialist litterature on Late Roman Britain and Northern Gaul (both east and West), covering the period from Constantine to ca. 450-500 AD. I’m especially interested in the administrative and military organisation of the provinces, societal change in the 4th century and post-roman political Identity.
I’m a poor historian like the rest of you, so I won’t pay you for the trouble of helping me, but do it anyway you cowards.

I'm sorry to ask but my Grandfather served on the Russian Convoys into Murmansk during WW2.i dont know what ship he sailed in but I remember he told me he very much enjoyed being in Murmansk. He has sadly passed some time ago.
I was told this was a very arduous task in the wartime navy.
Can anyone educate me on what life might be like for a Petty Officer during these convoys, or point me to a book or re-telling of what the Russian Convoys were like?

If not, how did they secure their houses and belongings? I know that locks have existed in one form or another for thousands of years, but I’m curious about how widespread and common to people outside the higher socio-economic class they were.
