Is it true that 86-90% of 18 years old in Soviet Union died during the WW2?

I often read about how 85-90% of conscripts born in 1922-1923 died during the war because of the massive casualties of the first year of the conflict but I have never seen a source for that. Is it true or a myth?

Are there any good studies of Ancient Greek population growth, demographics, and change over time?

I'd like to learn more about how the city states grew out of the Dark Age population-wise, but a lot of what I've found is based on estimations at certain points in time, not necessarily proper examinations of how they grew. Any insights or useful models for estimating population growth in antiquity in general (even if they don't directly pertain to Greece) would also be really interesting.

Thanks!

cannot find this source, marriage canon in medieval Christianity

I have a print out of an extract of the liber extra 1234, 4.15.2 on impotence in marriage. it starts 'You took a wife and you had her for some time, a month, three months, or at most after a year. Now for the first time you have said that you are of a frigid nature so that you cannot copulate with her or with anyone else.' I can not find where the original case comes from. It is in reference to Brocard XIX which I assumed meant the Gratian's decorum, but again cant find it referenced. Is there any gender of mediaeval historians help a gal out?

What were the exact orders given by King Philip IV of France to his generals that led to the arrest of the Templars?

I am working on a project for a church history class on the Avignon Papacy, specifically highlighting how Clement V did Philip's bidding, and I'm having an exceptionally difficult time locating this primary source document. If anyone knows where I might be able to find the original order I would be highly appreciative.

Was Hitler a vegetarian? And if he was did he do it for moral reasons?

I’ve heard people say that this was only an effort to improve how Hitler was perceived by others, so did he really didn’t eat meat? Did he actually thought that it wasn’t ethical to eat meat?

If you had an ancestor born in the US in 1748 who died at sea off of Sulawesi Tengah, Indonesia in 1780, what was that ancestor likely doing?

I'm researching the death of an ancestor of mine, John Udall/Udell who was born in Stonington, CT in 1748 and apparently came to his end at sea, half way around the world. Was he whaling? Traveling? Where are good places to look this up?

Edit: After I posted, I did a deeper dive and discovered that he moved from Stonington, to VT and later to Stephentown, NY, where according to the diary of his grandson, another John Udell, "he entered quite extensively into the mercantile business, built mills and farmed. He presently bought a ship and went as master of her to sea, where he died of yellow fever, leaving his business in quite an unsettled state."

Did Sigmund Freud's mother, Amalia Nathansohn Freud, ever comment on Freud's concept of the Oedipus complex?

Considering that Freud put forward the concept of the Oedipus complex while his mother Amalia was still alive, did anyone actually ask her about it? Wouldn't she have found this concept, at the very least, strange?

Did railroad corps use settlers to help them break up land prior to construction of lines?

I have a vague memory of reading once that some railroad corps, to help make the job of laying railroad beds easier, would grant or sell land rights ahead of time so the settlers would soften the earth as they trekked out in advance. I'd love to find out if this is actually true or not or if I'm imagining it, because I think it's an interesting example of farmers being used in the service of capital development. Any help would be really appreciated!

Why did the Entente powers not intervene in Russia during the Civil War?

The Russian Civil War lasted from 1917 to 1922 (at least that's what wikipedia said) and pitched the Reds against the Whites. As far as I know, European powers were already wary of the Soviets due to a dislike of socialism in general, seeing it as a threat meant to be quashed.

Seeing as WWI ended in the closing months of 1918 with the Treaty of Versailles being signed in early 1919, that still left 3 years for the Entente to intervene in Russia and back the whites, so why didn't they?

Did the European nations believe that the Soviets were destined to fail and that the Whites would emerge as Russia's new rulers? Did they just not care? Or were they too militarily exhausted from the war to really do anything, even with US materials and supply flooding in?

Schindler’s list and the Holocaust

As the movie depicts, Jewish women and children were taken to Auschwitz whilst the men’s train went to Schindler’s factory. I have read in reality, the women and children remained in Auschwitz for a number of weeks until bribes could be made. I am curious as to what the process was as it is my limited understanding that older women and children were immediately gassed upon arrival. My question is, how did they all manage to survive until they were saved? Was it because it was a time where gassings were happening less? Or because they were aware of ongoing bribes being made in order to secure safety? Etc.

I would like to add, this is by no means any anti-Semitic question nor any denial. I am just trying to enhance my understanding.

What gender were eunuchs?

I heard that in the ottoman empire eunuchs were used to guard the sultans harem because they were seen as a "bridge between man and woman" which to me sounds a lot like they viewed them as a 3rd gender. Was this how they were actually viewed or were they just thought of as men whod been castrated?

Historic farming brochures and seeds

We live in a house built in1910 in Lafayette, IN. We are having some HVAC work done and the workers discovered a 2nd attic that used to be part of the house - it has crown molding, wallpaper and shiplap. In the attic we found 50 pound bags of seeds, corn, and beans, along with farming brochures. Any ideas of the timeframe? It seems the seed company started in 1880. The label from the seed company was on the bad with small seeds - I can't read the writing and don't know what type of seeds they are. Thanks!

Has there been much systematic study in the creation of pseudo-history?

Hello,

Sometimes I find it fascinating to look into the more bizarre non-academic theories of history that exist, known as pseudo-history. It's not just about imagining how this strange would they live in would be like if it actually existed, but also what fascinates me is trying to piece together how they try to justify their argument.

I wonder if there has been some systematic research in how these pseudo-histories are made? I have read before books that talk about why pseudo-history is made, which usually boils down to some ideological, political, or religious agenda. But I'm more curious about the process of how a pseudo-history is pulled together.

Anyone can throw together a blog post claiming that Finland doesn't exist, but it takes a certain level of craftmanship, perhaps even an artform, to make it sound believable. Believable not just for an individual, but to grow in public media as large as possible before legitimate academia is able to shut it down. In the same way that books have been written about the arts used in propaganda or stage magic, I imagine pseudo-history is another field that optimizes how to deceive people, but I'm not aware of any such study myself.

Do we have evidence of furries (IE, people dressing up as animals and engaging in sexual activity) existing prior to the 1970s?

My understanding is that organized furry random came about from the underground comics scene of the 70s, but that kind of feels like saying that oral sex began with Deep Throat.

Given that it doesn't seem that hard to make anthropomorphic costumes, and that people have been horny for forever, do we have records of people dressing like animals and engaging in sexual activity?
