What was France’s intention for North America?

We all know France had vested interest in Louisiana and Quebec, but why those two, relatively distanced areas specifically? E.g. were they trying to outflank other countries, occupying the likes of New York, Boston etc. to command a greater share of North America?

Wire rope/wire was produced in the 1830's. What technological barrier was stopping us from developing it sooner?

Making a fictional world has me wondering what the minimum tech requirement would be to produce wire.

Nowadays, A lot of Saws Blades and Knives are Tagged "Ice-Hardened" to make them Stronger, Would this technique have helped contribute to some of the strength of Viking Weapons as the Water a Blacksmith would have chilled the blade in been cooler, or closer to "Ice-Water"?

Was unable to find anything in most Wikipedia or Forging articles that mentioned anything this.

Is this just a new-age marketing Term? Or is there some Historical Basis for this?

Most articles just focused on how they folded or Welded lower carbon Iron "Ovals" into the blade to help strengthen them despite a lower carbon percentage.

Can anyone recommend reading on the history of financial crime and embezzlement?

Recently, I've been hearing a lot of news about crimes that are fairly white collar in nature, such as Ireland's court battle with the EU over Apple's tax bill, as well as exploitation of loopholes in the coronavirus relief funds provided by many countries. This has got me interested in embezzlement as a historical phenomenon, which I assume is as old as civilisation. I have a few particular fields I'm curious about:

  1. I'm very interested in embezzlement on a small and medium scale, such as farmers exploiting agricultural subsidies in ways unintended by policymakers or creative accounting for family-run restaurants, rather than Enron or Lehman Brothers-style corruption

  2. I'd like to know more about cases in which rushed or otherwise badly thought-out legislation has led to unintended side effects and been taken advantage of

  3. I'm fascinated by the idea of state capture and of consciously-developed tax havens

  4. I'd like to find out about the evolution of financial crime over time and, in particular, how it changed in line with innovations in finance itself like double-entry bookkeeping and mortgages

I'm more or less equally interested in all time periods and cultures, but have no financial training so anything overly technical, like treasury paperwork, might be beyond my reach. I can read Spanish and French if any works are available in those. Case studies or any writing with a touch of humour / the ability to liven up and add character to this sort of thing would be especially warmly received.

I know this all might be quick niche, so thanks for anyone that can provide recommendations

Why do we call ethnic Europeans Caucasians?

I made this joke to a friend recently in response to him pointing out that I'm caucasian. "I'm not caucasian, I'm German. My family didn't come from the Caucasus." While I understand there are people who think these super ethnic catagories are useful, I've never understood why the specific ethnic group of caucasians was used additionally as a super category. Doesn't this cause problems when you want to talk about Caucasuian food specifically for example?

Hokusai's "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" (c. 1830) is arguably one of the most famous and reproduced illustrations in the world, but it first appeared as one piece of his series, 'Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji'. What happened that caused *this one* to completely eclipse the other 35?

It's one of the most popular, parodied, reproduced and widely displayed illustrations of the modern age, but with a gun to my head I would have to confess that I'd never seen any of the others and had not even known of their existence. How was it that this one particular woodblock print came to dominate popular culture, even in the west? Or might my biases be showing, and actually the rest of them remain quite popular in Japan - but for some reason it's just the wave that's really taken off for western viewers?

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, a large majority of the Muslim World became occupied by Christian Europeans. Was there any religious turmoil because of this?

By "religious turmoil", I was thinking theological.Did anyone see this as being "cursed by God" or being punished somehow? Did anyone think that it would lead to the end of Islam or the world?

Why were the North States Anti-Slavery while the South were Pro-Slavery?

What made the northers despise slavery in the first place, as my little understanding at that time having slaves that you wouldn't have to pay them for work meant greater revenue for businessmen, so what happened? (On a side note, I'm an Egyptian who really wants to understand that era but Google couldn't help me, and I apologize if I said anything that mistakenly offended any person)

When examining previous historical eras, how come the different eras of the 20th Century are distinctively categorised by the decade, while previous historical eras are often categorised by the century?

So whenever I delve into previous historical eras between the 20th Century, I barely see any difference in the cultural mainstream or the significances between the decades (such as cultural, political or technological differences between the 1850s and 1860s for example) while in the 20th Century, the differences between the decades are often quite apparent such as

the 1900s and 1910s was the beginning of the modern era and the adaptation to more modern technology and the implementation of said technology in the First World War and the political shift that happened during the war and after;

the 1920s as the political shift after the Great War, from the beginning of the declining influence among the Imperial Powers

the 1930s as the Great Depression and the rise of Fascism

the 1940s, the Second World War

the 1950s, the Baby Boomers era, American exceptionalism, the rise of the American Economy and the beginning of the paranoia against Communism during the Cold War

and so on.

How come this is the case? Does the familiarity (or the youngness) of the timing have any significance on the clarity between the decades in the 20th Century or perhaps there is more clarity in the archaeological remains of the decades? Perhaps the technology that was used during that century allowed for better preservation of historical and archaeological evidence when compared to other centuries which might have been lost through time or were influenced by other factors during that time (such as how the other nations were identified during the Age of Discovery or the Age of Imperialism)?

Differences in cuisines between the East and the West - how come Eastern countries do not involve certain foods like bread and cheese and use different methods of cooking than Western cuisines?

To my knowledge, lots of Eastern cuisines rely heavily on spices and other ingredients to add flavour, and are more reliant on other ingredients like vegetables, fish and fermented foods (like in Russia, they have the Kvass which is basically a fermented rye bread beverage) while Western cuisines rely heavily on other ingredients such as carbohydrate-heavy dishes like bread, pasta and pizza, and use meat is the main ingredient of the dish; or even have more sweets than Eastern or even African dishes.

Even cooking techniques are often different like Asian cuisines involve a lot of boiling, steaming and stir-frying and often cook in large pans or woks; while Western cuisines involve frying, cooking, oven-baking and grilling and so on.

Even in terms of utensils, Eastern cuisines relied heavily on chopsticks or using their hands for eating while the Western part of the world adapted to the knife and fork.

So how come there are these differences between the two cultural cuisines?

I once heard that the rulers of Korea back during the Joseon Dynasty would employ representatives that were tasked with sneakily rooting out corruption, and these representatives had authority equivalent to the King himself. Is there any historical evidence to support this?

It certainly sounds like a super badass way to deal with corruption, but I'd like to know if this is legit.
