Would "dressed in rags" have meant that someone wore clothing so ruined that it should have been used as rags, or that their clothing had been heavily mended or made from scraps of older clothing?

I read a lot of stories as a kid that were set in earlier centuries, and often poor children would be described as wearing rags. I pictured it then as them wearing old, tattered clothes with tears and stains. I think this interpretation came from the stories often being set during winter, so when they were described as shivering in the cold, I would imagine them being so cold because their clothes were full of holes. Was being "dressed in rags" actually more like wearing patchwork clothing, or maybe wearing older clothes that had been mended beyond recognition?

Thursday Reading & Recommendations | January 16, 2020

Previous weeks!

Thursday Reading and Recommendations is intended as bookish free-for-all, for the discussion and recommendation of all books historical, or tangentially so. Suggested topics include, but are by no means limited to:

  • Asking for book recommendations on specific topics or periods of history

  • Newly published books and articles you're dying to read

  • Recent book releases, old book reviews, reading recommendations, or just talking about what you're reading now

  • Historiographical discussions, debates, and disputes

  • ...And so on!

Regular participants in the Thursday threads should just keep doing what they've been doing; newcomers should take notice that this thread is meant for open discussion of history and books, not just anything you like -- we'll have a thread on Friday for that, as usual.

Where did most jews live prior to the advent of zionism and the creation of Israel? Did most of Isreal's jewish population come from Europe?

From my European school perspective it seems like most jews lived in Eastern Europe, for example Poland and the are that is now Ukraine. However, I am aware that a big part of Isreal's current population are jews from or with parents/grandparents from arabic countries. How big was the population of Middle Eastern jews and is my perception that most jews came from Europe to Israel is wrong/eurocentric?

General Robin Olds

On page 105 of the book "Fighter Pilot" the memoirs of Gen. Olds (completed by his daughter and friend Ed Rasimus) he concludes the account of an escort mission on Oct 6 1944 in which 42 B-17s were lost. Olds' states they were from the 2nd bomb division. I found an article ( https://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/AAF/III/AAF-III-18.html ) stating a B-17 "formation "...lost the high squadron from its last combat wing...." that may be the same action, but there's no number given. That's all I can find.

Can anyone provide the actual losses or any further information on this action? Also, I would be interested in thoughts on the book in general. Thanks.

What is History?

Hey everyone,

I am a history student in Germany and not to long ago we had a multiple classes on Didactics of History which simply started with the question: "What is History?"

The theories we dealt with during the class came almost exclusively from German scholars: Michele Barricelli; Jörn Rüsen; Klaus Bergmann; Hans-Jürgen Pandel; Johannes Meyer-Hamme; Bodo von Borries and so on.

So maybe a bit more of a free and personal question than what comes up here regularly, but what is history to you?

What was the reason for France's slow population growth in the Industrial Revolution?

I've always wondered how France, a country that during the 100 years war, was home to roughly the same amount of people as that of the HRE and one that vastly outmatched the English during this same time period could end up by WW1, with a population that was now not much bigger than England and now smaller than Germany. When I found these statistics during the 19th century where France, in comparison to the other countries listed, had the lowest population growth. So why did France's population stagnate (in comparison to the rapid growth seen across an industrialising Europe) during this period?

Looking for books/articles/resources on disability & WW2 - Germany/Europe

To be specific, I'm looking for any credible sources on how the Nazi regime and Hitler's ideologies threatened disabled people in Europe. The Holocaust, entirely.

Wikipedia says about 250k disabled people were killed during the Holocaust, and I'm having some trouble finding stories or any real good research on that specifically. I'm disabled myself and into advocacy and I'm really interested in this portion of WW2 that I can't seem to find much coverage on. I've heard a lot of people say things vaugely about how the disabled were treated, but I don't know any good commendable sources. I've heard about the 7 dwarves of Auchwitz but that's about it.

Thank you!

Anglicans in Palestine?

According to the 1922 census of Palestine, there were several thousand members of the "Church of England" living in Palestine:

https://archive.org/stream/PalestineCensus1922/Palestine%20Census%20%281922%29#page/n60/mode/1up

Surely British soldiers were not counted in the census.

How did there come to be that many Anglicans in Palestine? How did this come to be? Was there an active Anglican missionary presence in Mandatory Palestine? Were they converting native Christians, or Muslims and Jews, or everyone?

Technological History Question (Dynamos in the late 19th century)

Hello. This question is probably very basic, from a technology/ technological history standpoint, so I hope I will be forgiven if any part of it is based upon false assumptions. Here it is: In the latter 19th century (say, 1899 -1900), if someone decided to construct a dynamo to electrically power a compound of about a dozen buildings, would the dynamo itself need to be powered by a generator or engine powered by (for example) gasoline or diesel fuel?

One of Oda Nobunaga’s fabled set-piece atrocities was the third siege of the Nagashima temple-fortresses. Supposedly he built up a wooden wall that he set on fire and burned the fortress and all it’s 20,000 defenders to ashes. Is this really plausible or just part of the Nobunaga legend?

Was there debate in Soviet government or society about the development of nuclear weapons? If so, what did this look like?

Posters like this, this, and this are frequently propagated as government propaganda from the Soviet era. I'm not sure when these posters were made originally, or I'd be more specific on the dates. They clearly promote an anti-nuclear-war agenda, and yet while I can't find specific info with a quick search, the Soviet Union seems to have been building its nuclear arsenal and researching new nuclear weapons developments all through the Cold War. Were these made by the government? If so, were there internal disputes over the use of nuclear weapons? Or were they made by groups of civilians (was this even a thing in the USSR?), and if so, what was the government approach to dealing with this?

Books from sailors about sailing pre-20th century

I am looking for a book (ideally written firsthand by a sailor) about living on a ship with at least some logistics of how the ship was controlled (for example hierarchy of different sailors or how food and water were stored) pre-20th century.

Thanks a lot!
