Some prisoners got right off the trains and straight into the gas chambers as other prisoners watched and knew their fate. Why was it that say that whole train full was immediately killed where as camps were filled with prisoners for years?

Obviously the ability to work plays a role- but then again many of these prisoners were so famished and beat they could no longer work yet were kept alive.

So I went and saw the movie Midway last night and read some of the information on Best at the battle. In everything that happened that day, Best inhaled some caustic soda (NaOH) from an oxygen tank that then activated some latent tuberculosis, thus ending his flight career. My specific question is this: Why was there NaOH in oxygen tanks on the planes?

I haven't been able to find any information in a couple searches online and was curious to see if anyone on here knew why there was a corrosive base leaking out of the oxygen tank.

What would be a reasonable way to work out the value?
I appreciate this question has likely been asked before, but I couldn't find any reference when I searched.

I was reading about what is called a "Hand of Glory" - The severed and preserved hand of a gibbeted felon, clutching a candle made out of the felons blubber. This amulet was said be able to render anyone who viewed it motionless.

In a text describing the process of making it (From 1792) two ingredients unknown to me are listed - zimat, and 'ponie'

I have searched high-and-low but to no avail. Anyone have any ideas? Here is the original text

"Take the right or left hand of a felon who is hanging from a gibbet beside a highway; wrap it in part of a funeral pall and so wrapped squeeze it well. Then put it into an earthenware vessel with zimat*, nitre, salt and long peppers, the whole well powdered. Leave it in this vessel for a fortnight, then take it out and expose it to full sunlight during the dog-days until it becomes quite dry. If the sun is not strong enough put it in an oven with fern and vervain. Next make a kind of candle from the fat of a gibbeted felon, virgin wax, sesame, and ponie, and use the Hand of Glory as a candlestick to hold this candle when lighted, and then those in every place into which you go with this baneful instrument shall remain motionless"

I've been looking for awhile and cantyfi find any information as the name suggests. What I'm after is something that tells me what the average rifle division or regular division of a major belligerent was in strength. Man power battalions, etc. If anyone has any good, reputable sources of information on this sort of thing, I'd appreciate being pointed in the right direction.

Was it a slow transition from one to the other? Is there any crossover of Chinese/ Asian language roots found in Native American language? What happened to the Asian characters?

Were black Germans suffering the same civil rights as African-Americans during this period of time?

A random thought that came to me as I was looking up the right of first night, where local lords supposedly could claim a woman first on her wedding night. I was wondering, is there anything really to stop a feudal lord from just having his way with the wives of his subjects? Not just on her wedding night, but whenever he felt? Was there any real tangible repercussions for it or no?

I hope I’m getting that term right. By Inuits I mean the chaps that live in the northern hemisphere where the weather isn’t so hospitable.

By explain them I mean a few things:

1. why on earth did they stay in such cold climates instead of just moving south?

2. how did they come to use metal tools in a place with arguably no iron ore?

3. surely they must have lived very short lives, from a combination of the harsh environment and such a limited diet, amongst other things?

I’ve always wondered why humans would subject themselves to such dire conditions, I have similar quandaries concerning nomadic Saharan tribes....but anyway, any help would be much appreciated! I just want to know about their lives in general.
