How did Chile and Italy end up with the same plugs? What about China and Argentina? Moreover, how did Chile and Argentina and Bolivia all end up with different socket types despite neighboring each other?
It seems like there’s a bunch of weird pairings of countries that don’t seem to have much of a shared history, while countries that border each other outside of North America and Europe have a lot of variation.

Having recently heard that the tribes of the Iroquois Confederacy supposedly practiced a matriarchal society, I was wondering about how much power women actually did wield in their society/societies, since the "chiefs" we know of still were male. Was there any formalized division of domains (e.g. external vs. internal) or were women privy to political decisions as well? Was their power limited to the tribe or did it extend into the Confederacy? Or is it all a hoax anyway and I've just fallen for another piece of "common knowledge, duh"?

Wales was conquered by England in the 13th Century, Ireland by the 17th, and Scotland unified in 1707. But Welsh is spoken by 19% of Wales while Gaelic is spoken fluently by 1% of the people in Scotland and Ireland. Why can more Welshmen speak their native tongue better than the Irish or the Scots when they were conquered by the English hundreds of years earlier?

Most of us are aware of the Uighur situation in China. I am understanding this as part of concerns over independence/autonomy movements like those in Tibet. Correct me if I am wrong.

I've read from numerous sources that there were Frisian cavalry stationed at Hadrian's Wall, and that Angles and Saxons were among numerous tribes used as Foederati employed by the Roman Empire. Do we have archaeological evidence of Germanic people in Britain before the Romans left? And do we have any contemporary documents from before 410 AD that might be relevant?

For example, at one point Harald Sigurdsson was attempting to become King of Denmark, largely by calling out his vassals every year and launching humongous raids. Did he inform Sweyn that they were at war, and when he eventually failed, did they conduct formal peace negotiations leading to a written treaty? Or was there some other arrangement? Similarly, if he had succeeded in killing Sweyn, how would he have imposed his rule, presumably against the opposition of many important Danish landowners? How did these early kings conceptualise what we would call foreign relations, and how did they conduct them?

I am wondering more specifically in regards to the experience of Elector Palatine Frederick V. Given that both the Palatinate and Bohemia were electoral territories, upon becoming King of Bohemia in 1619, did Frederick technically hold two votes in the Imperial electoral college? Are there any other examples of an individual in the Holy Roman Empire holding dual elector titles?

I've been looking through de Re Metallica to get an idea of what mining was like in the European Middle Ages, but I was wondering if anyone knew anything cool they'd like to share? Like facts, images, sources, etc. I would appreciate literally anything, no matter how basic or specific. What did mines look like, what were the conditions (flooding, air, etc.), layouts, machinery, tools, equipment, (lighting?) economics, influence, and labor like? Anything you feel like sharing would really be appreciated! I'm trying to do research for an online fiction I'm writing which heavily features mining engineering concepts and am interested in delving into very specific facts and technical details related to this topic, but I don't really know where to start. I'm well read in modern mining practices, but the historic side eludes me...
I'm also very interested in concepts related to prospecting and querying. :D

So in my meandering journey across the internet, I came across the works of A.A. Pessimal. He's an anomaly in the fanfic world, being an older man who has ostensibly spent time in the British Army and Northern Ireland, and who has a great interest in South Africa. Some of his Discworld fics hold a mirror up to South Africa during the Apartheid period, giving it the Discworld treatment (and in one case raising the issue of Igors, who don't do race - leading to the interesting question of how to categorise a white man who, after surgical intervention by an Igor, came to have organs from a black donor).
In one story, Pessimal observes in a footnote: "One of many pressures on apartheid came from men who had done front-line service in the South African Defence Forces and realised it's hard to hate or despise the black soldier who's fighting as you do and taking the same risks you take. "no apartheid in the front line" was something of a truism. The modern South African Army is multi-racial and integrated; in the old days South African black soldiers were, officially at least, segregated as "auxiliaries". But this distinction soon broke down in combat."
How much truth is there in this observation? How did race really work out in the shooty-shooty? What sort of view might the South African version of Tommy Atkins have of the black trooper in the foxhole next to him?
