How dangerous and expensive was the construction of the "Cactus Dome" on Runit Island? There was news that the dome is leaking radiation into the groundwater and the Pacific, and I couldn't find much information on how the dome was created or what troops built it. How did weapons testing cleanup in the Pacific compare to meltdown cleanup in Chernobyl?

One idea I have is that the Crusades might have played a part possibly if crusaders saw lions while in the holy land and Egypt. But what about coats of arms from before the crusades or countries which didn't really have crusading armies.
Also, weren't lions pretty much extinct in that part of the world by the time of the crusades?
How did Europeans know what lions were? And why were they so enamoured with them to put them on almost all heraldry. Why weren't bears more common since they were actually native to Europe and present at the time?

I'm trying to find information about my great grandfather, Arthur Studdinger. I've found he was a member of company E, 353rd infantry regiment, 89th division.
I've also found a unit history for the 353rd that includes him in a unit roster. That unit history is actually fairly detailed, but chapters are often broken down into 1st battalion, 2nd battalion, 3rd battalion, and I dont know how to translate his company into what battalion he was a part of. I also dont know how to go about getting any specific further information about Arthur. Date of service, battles participated in, e.t.c.
I realize this may not be the best place to post this, but I dont know where to go next, and i figured this sub could help me get started.
Thank you

For one or my papers I chose to talk about the mecanisms which the Nazis used to consolidate power andrepress opposition. I know there's Hannah Arendt and Johann Chaputot. Who are some historians who have an interesting take on the Nazis power or regime ?

I have seen many communists claiming that Snyder is a hack and that the book is a joke, but for the sake of a more objective metric, do mainstream historians take this book seriously?

In regards to imperialism around 1890's and early 1900s, why did the United States not annex Cuba? The U.S. was eager to control places like Hawaii and post Spanish American War territories so I wonder why they didn't go all the way and occupy Cuba as they did in the Philippines, Puerto Rico, etc.

Whenever I read about historical events, or watch a documentary, I'm always amazed that they often have both sides of a written conversation. How much of this is just guess work? Did both sides keep a copy of what they were sending for posterity/their own records?

The mongols conquered all of Asia, from China to Arabia, but why couldn't they push on to Europe and conquer it? It seems quite confusing to me

My understanding is that Apollinaire was arrested first, and implicated Picasso, who was arrested a few days later. But both were released after about a week.

Hey so I'm wondering what would be the best material or something of value to know more about the Three Kingdoms of 14th-Century China. After Total War Three Kingdoms came out, and replaying my guilty pleasure Dynasty Warriors 4, I realize I don't have firm understanding of ancient Chinese history. I just want to try to have a better understanding of that time period.

So as we all know, a great Memorial Day tradition of many across the country is the visitation of deceased family whom served. Yesterday, I made the annual trip out to the National Cemetery where my grandfather, cousins and great uncle lie (all on my father's side). Something that I've always took note of is the inscription on my great uncle Joseph's tombstone: PFC BTRY B 115 AAA BN CAC World War II BSM & OLC I understand that the last part might mean bronze Star Medal and Oak Leaf Cluster but I have no information whatsoever about this unit or my great uncle's service except that he supposedly saw combat at Remagen. I would appreciate any info or sources on this particular unit since it would be the only valid info of service in the war involving my family. Granddad served in Panama and was supposed to have been left behind on jungle patrol when his unit was pulled out right after news of the Pearl Harbor attack was announced. He spent the rest of the war as a POW guard. Sadly, I do not know which unit he served in. Thank you very much.

I'm asking purely out of general interest. I love the 13th century arms and armour. I wanted to know how much it would cost for a knight to be fully equipped with a sword, lance, horse and any other arms and armour I may not be aware of. Also how much it would be relative to the time. Nerd question, I do apologise.

I stumbled upon this sentence while surfing yesterday: "Jewish scripture is in essence Babylonian and Akkadian mythology with Hebrew/Yahwist elements constructed for establishing a religion to help control a Hebrew state under Persian rule". I did some research on Jewish history in ancient times, it is fascinating, but i would really like to hear expert opinion on this. Thank you!

Hello everyone! Quick announcement!
Over the next few weeks, we're going to be testing out something new. In the past, we have considered having a stickied post by Automod in every thread with a brief reminder about the rules, but have always ended up deciding against the idea, for various reasons. One of the big ones has been concern about it becoming a de facto "Off-topic chatter and speculation goes here!" comment chain, which we are very much against. We currently post those kinds of things manually in particularly active threads, and it often ends up being the case, but we can remove them quickly since we always know when there is a reply to ourselves of course.
In more recent evaluation though, we have been reconsidering the pragmatic balance there, and then earlier this month, the Admins plopped a nice little gift in our lap, the ability to lock specific comments to replies! It has to be done manually right now (please, /u/sodypop, add that as an Automod condition!), but it is a big step in the right direction, and enough of a change that we're going to give it a try.
The hope is that, especially for mobile users unfamiliar with the subreddit, it will offer a somewhat better on-boarding experience by seeing a brief explanation about the community and the rules, something which isn't intuitive with Mobile Web or App viewing. This is only a test though, so we can evaluate both the specifics of the message, as well as more broadly the impact of the change. We can't do true A/B testing, but you will find that using super secret techniques the message will only be showing up on roughly 50 percent of posts, as we want to get a sense of the impact.
Additionally, please leave any feedback you might have on the test in this thread!

I have often wondered this while visiting ancient historic sites with obvious religious connotations. There is a tendency to view historic societies as homogeneous, with each member having the same beliefs, practices and rituals as their peers. This is obviously not the case as in any society there is a variety of beliefs being practised at any given time.
I know that the concept of atheism as we know it today originated in the west with the Ancient Greeks, but surely some sort of disbelief of gods must of existed before then? What evidence do we have to suggest the existence of such (dis)beliefs? What percentage of people were actively religious? Is there even anyway of knowing?
