Books regarding Shaka Zulu

I’d like to read more about Shaka and his Zulus in pre-colonial South Africa. I’ve read Walton Golightly but have discovered he’s not very reliable though he did pique my interest. Which authors/books should I be looking for?

What was fighting between China and Japan like during World War 2, and what kind of weapons did each side use? What kind of guns were the Chinese using at the time, up to date or something outdated?

Rationale behind the "Century of Humiliation", the causes of the First Opium War, and subsequent Western/Chinese Engagement

I ask this question because a few comments in this thread - https://www.reddit.com/r/HongKong/comments/boqh1i/heshe_forgot_to_add_hong_kong/ - suggest that the First Opium War and the subsequent series of unequal treaties stemmed predominately from the interior fighting such as Taiping Rebellion and overall ineptitude of the Qing dynasty.

This runs contrary to what I had studied regarding the economic causes such as the massive trade imbalances created with Great Britain starting with their dislike of the Canton system.

What is the current historical consensus on this and furthermore, to what extent did Mao and the CCP embellish facts surrounding the unequal treaties for political gain.

Very much thank you!

Out of all the groups that opposed the shah in the run up to 1979, why did the Ayatollah end up coming out on top?

recent tensions between american and iran have made me curious about the revolution that led to the current state of affairs in the first place

im also curious about what the actors in the revolution themselves had to say about the fact that the ayatollah ended up winning, either in the run up to the revolution, during, or after. how do they explain (or if they're speaking before the revolution, anticipate) khomenei's rise?

Why didn't british colonizers mix themselves with natives like the portuguese and spanish did?

Was there less native american population the further you went to the north or perhaps they didn't have as much contact with the natives as their portuguese and spanish counterparts did?

During WWII, what was the situation like at the Swedish-Norwegian border, and how did the German occupiers interact with the Swedish forces on the other side?

Back story time. My grand father served in the Swedish Ski Troops (title I was told) during the second world war. Before he passed, he told a few stories of him being stationed in the artic circle guarding the boarder between Sweden and Norway. The twist to this story is that he said he never fought the Germans. Instead he and others would actually meet up with the occupying patrols and swap food rations because the weather conditions were so harsh. The only other details he would add to the story was that the German units were comprised of old men and young kids. Apparently that was the post for weaker populations of the Army.

I've tried finding information on this story but haven't found anything. Any information is appreciated. Thank you

What is the historical connection between Socialism and National Socialism (Nazism)?

It is nowadays kinda a controversy to mention that there is a connection between those ideologies. An example is this debate on the EU parliament: https://youtu.be/1LfnbusMd_0

But, What is the historical background between the both ideologies?

Why would Constantine choose Christianity?

He lived most of his life as a pagan in a largely pagan soceity that regularly persecuted Christians. Of all of the religions floating around why would Christianity become the official religion of the empire? Was it fear of backlash if he chose something else, was it to promote tolerance and abate conflict, or is strictly utilitarian and Christianity is one the better religions for uniting people under a common rule?

How lethal was it to be at the head of a military charge? How would you convince soldiers to fight in the front rank?

Obviously this will vary based on time period and style of warfare. I'm asking primarily about the European middle ages (post-phalanx, pre-gunpowder) though I'd love to hear about other cultures too. Did infantry armies really charge headlong into one another as seen in every movie ever, or were pitched battles usually fought by an explicit attacker and defender?

Short Answers to Simple Questions | May 15, 2019

Previous weeks!

Please Be Aware: We expect everyone to read the rules and guidelines of this thread. Mods will remove questions which we deem to be too involved for the theme in place here. We will remove answers which don't include a source. These removals will be without notice. Please follow the rules.

Some questions people have just don't require depth. This thread is a recurring feature intended to provide a space for those simple, straight forward questions that are otherwise unsuited for the format of the subreddit.

Here are the ground rules:

  • Top Level Posts should be questions in their own right.

  • Questions should be clear and specific in the information that they are asking for.

  • Questions which ask about broader concepts may be removed at the discretion of the Mod Team and redirected to post as a standalone question.

  • We realize that in some cases, users may pose questions that they don't realize are more complicated than they think. In these cases, we will suggest reposting as a stand-alone question.

  • Answers MUST be properly sourced to respectable literature. Unlike regular questions in the sub where sources are only required upon request, the lack of a source will result in removal of the answer.

  • Academic secondary sources are prefered. Tertiary sources are acceptable if they are of academic rigor (such as a book from the 'Oxford Companion' series, or a reference work from an academic press).

  • The only rule being relaxed here is with regard to depth, insofar as the anticipated questions are ones which do not require it. All other rules of the subreddit are in force.

Were landmines used in WW1?

From what I understand so far, defences mostly consisted of trenches protected with barbed wire, machine guns and later in the war anti-tank ditches.

But we’re landmines not used at all?

I know the British used “mines” offensively by detonating explosives under German trenches.

But what about your more traditional anti-personal mines?

Books on the Sengoku period

Like the title suggests any book that deals with the political climate during that period, specifically in the years leading upto Nobunaga's ascendancy. Would prefer if the book was mainly focused on the reasons daimyo had for fighting each other, political climate, alliances etc. Also wouldn't mind some primary sources like The Pillow Book or Lady Murasaki's diary!

Was Convict Leasing A Continuation Of Slavery?

In The Shawshank Redemption, one of the characters jokingly refers to the use of convicts for outside construction projects as "slave labor" - and while that movie was set in the north and with a mixed race group of prisoners, in reality was it implicitly or explicitly understood as a continution of slavery in the south? What kind of industries would lease convict labor?

Dueling and the rules.

How were the "rules" to dueling passed down? Having your seconds meet to try to smooth the waters, deciding the place where the duel will take place, etc. Was there a sort of "rulebook"? Duelling has interested me for awhile but I have been trying to find more information on the act itself and cant find anything regarding where the "rules" originated.

If a modern Catholic priest went back in time to the 1100s or 1200s, what arguments would they have with a Catholic priest from that time about doctrine and praxis? What about the 600s or 700s?

I know a bit about Vatican II (less latin, Priest facing the congregation) but surely there have been many other changes, developments, reinterpretations, etc over such a long time, even before Vatican II.

What caused the political fracturing of Italy following its ascension into the German Empire in the mid 10th century? Also, is it true that Germany became messed up becasue of the old Germanic sucession law?

Right so a while back, I was making a map of the early HRE, eventually after doing research, I made the map that looked like this: https://i.imgur.com/wPyB9Vn.jpg

As we can see, it was actually very orderly.

Now I have come to understand that the reason German part of the Empire became so messed up was because of the outdated Germanic succession law which split the sub-realms between all sons of the ruler equaly. As we have seen with the Frankish realm, while in theory it remained one realm, funcionaly it was divided between indepedent kingdoms ruled by Carolingian brothers, who were more often than not at each others throats. Sometimes, if other brothers die, before having childern themsleves, the realm became more unified as one of the other brothers would inherit. However given the extended time period, in Germany, I assume that sometimes succesor realms simply never got together and split apart permanently. Question: Is what I have just wrote actually the reason Germany became so fractured?

Question number two, as I understand, Kingdom of Italy remained relatively centralised, atleast around its core center in Pavia and north Italy. At the time of its ascension into the German realm, there were 4-5 sub realms which constituted it. However, overtime in some 150 years, the once cohesive regions of Lombardy and Tuscany became a patchwork of tiny states, principalities and city republics. Why? It is my understanding that the Germanic succesion laws didn't apply to Kingdom of Italy? Can someone expain this process of political fragmentations in more detial?

Thanks in advance!

What did Hitler think of the French and their government?

I know they were enemies, but what did he think of them outside of that? As fellow Aryans, or as Untermenschen or something similar? What about the French government? Did he think of them as cowards, or honorable opponents?
