Regarding quotations claimed to be said by Gautama Buddha - how can historians and archaeologists verify which quotations are true/accurate or not?

If you search for Buddhism quotes on the internet, you will a diverse of different kinds which are often meant to be enlightening or uplifting or useful for one's well-being and health even though the main tenets of Buddhism (the four noble truths) also involve the acknowledgement of one's sufferring and being free from desire in order to achieve enlightenement and being able to go into a state of Nirvana.

However, considering that Buddhism has also its own sub-divisions and sub-disciplines and with their own sacred scriptures and origins, it is somewhat difficult to verify which of these quotations are actually said by Gautama (passed down by the followers of Gautama and Buddhism) and which ones are fake as what Gautama taught to his earliest followers were passed down through the word of mouth

How can historians and archaeologists verify which ones are fake and which ones are not?

Hair dye in England in the 13th and 15th centuries

I am a (currently male-presenting) medieval reenactor, who will, for unconnected reasons, soon dye my hair purple. Will there be any historical accuracy in such dye, and if not, any common ways medieval men totally covered their hair, such that it won't have to be dyed further?

Why didn't the German army march through Switzerland in order to manoeuvre around the French lines during WW1?

I understand that Swiss neutrality was respected by all nations, but Germany didn't respect Belgian neutrality. Considering how desperate the opposing armies were to find any advantage, why didn't the German army march through Switzerland?

How historically reliable is Islam’s Hadith?

How reliable is Islam’s Hadiths from a purely historical perspective? It seems that a lot of it is based on hearsay, and as it was compiled hundreds of years after the death of Muhammad, how accurate and reliable could one expect it to be?

Does the Sunni and Shiite methods of categorizing a Hadith’s reliability stand a historical critique? And how much has intervention from other nations and division after the Sunni/Shiite split effected Hadith in terms of authenticity, if it does at all?

In a Sharpe film, Sharpe's Eagle, a character is present who is an English officer who fought for England during the War for Independence, and then again against Napoleon. Is this a thing that happened, if so, how much?

How do you counter greatswords like Montantes/Zweihänders?

Hi! I'm looking into some swordplay examples/styles for personal writing purposes and I've been caught on greatswords like montantes and Zweis.

From what I've seen, if the layout is right, a very intimidating twirling style that covers the whole area around the person is effective. For reference, I've been looking at videos like this.

Now, I know a person can't obviously do this forever or at an overwhelming speed, nor would this tactic be usable in every situation. But I'm still curious on the general mindset and openings someone would look for when dealing with a greatsword user? Especially since it seems like as long as there's enough room, the sword could start-up those motions again and it doesn't look like anything you want to get caught up in.

I know next to nothing except what I personally try to look up, so I look at everything just from an outsider's perspective and using what I think is common sense. More specifically, trying to find an opening would be dangerous with swipes like that since it could mean sliced hands, arms, or god forbid your head.

So TLDR; how do you counter greatswords? Especially ones in motion?

What is the history of humans consuming more than one meal a day?

In a lot of diet/food reddits, people are starting to support a diet called One Meal A Day or OMAD. People are saying that historically people only ate one meal a day in most cultures. The problem is that I cannot find anything that corroborates this with any lasting evidence.

For example, this Smithsonian article mentions how breakfast wasn't common. But it only uses western countries to make its argument.

https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/mostly-old-and-ill-ate-breakfast-until-rise-working-man-180954041/

It mentions Romans and middle age Europe as if that is the sum total of human history.

I've read things ranging from:

"In many cultures throughout history and all over the world, people ate once a day. Just as a matter of logistics and convenience"

to

"I remember reading somewhere that the concept of breakfast (i.e. eating a meal in the morning) was - if not invented by, then heavily promoted by, Kellogg’s to sell more product"

relating to OMAD.

How true are these claims and can they be applied with a broad brush across the sum of human history?

How historically accurate are the "warrior codes" that some knights/samurai in media have?

We have all seen it, be in period pieces or fantasy inspired in the medieval era about knights posessing a sort of "chivalry rules of conduct", that may include "help the ones in need", "be pious", that sort of thing.

We also have seen various pieces of japanese media (movies, manga and anime) portraying samurai bound by codes of honor, where if broken they would even come to commit suicide (seppuku) over it, or otherwise becoming renegades (Ronin)

All in all, was that something that was followed? Was it something created recently to add a flair of "nobility" to what only amounted as soldiers/mercenaries? Or was something that in theory existed, but in practice it was only window dressing?
