Is there a turning point in global wealth?

So excuse me if my question is not in perfect English, it’s not my main language.

So I’m watching The Big Short right now and people are talking about billions of dollars. And it got me thinking, was there ever a level of wealth in egyptian/roman/medieval/post renaisance times that matches the wealth that the ‘1%’ has now. Taking inflation and eveything in account.

So my questions are; Is there an event in history that completely changed global/continental economy,** And has there been a moment in time where the difference between the richest and the poorest was as big as it is now? Maybe in Roman times?

**: I know of the Dutch East Indian Trading Company that basically invented the stock market but to my knowledge has only boosted Dutch economy

Did the U.S. Government learn anything of value from its plutonium injection experiments on unknowing patients?

I'm reading through this and it reminds me of experiments done in concentration camps which resulted in nothing of value, so I'm wondering if these too resulted in nothing valuable.

Salem Witch Trials Stupidity?

So everyone knows about the Salem witch trials and everything and while I am very interested in history, but I never learned much about the witch trials besides basic things. Anyways, my question, assuming the whole “if we drop her in the water and she sinks or we hold her under the water and she drowns then she’s innocent and if she survives then she’s a witch” thing is true, then why didn’t they just realize like “hey, these women with rocks tied to them and who are lowered in and held there by being tied to a wooden pole basically are literally ALL dying”? Like surely there’d be people who’d think hey if we’ve done this to all these women and not a single one has been guilty, why don’t we stop sooner?

Did Turks employ mercenaries?

I am asking this bc while watching history videos on youtube, i realized how often nations employed mercenaries, on the other hand i can not recall any mercenaries from the past of my own nation. Do better detail the question

1)I will use the "Turkic" definition so ancestors of any of these groups are acceptable http://www.wikizero.biz/index.php?q=aHR0cHM6Ly9lbi5tLndpa2lwZWRpYS5vcmcvd2lraS9UdXJraWNfcGVvcGxlcw a)The ruler must be Turkic (although a foreign mother etc are totally acceptable) b)The target empire/khante/beylik must have a group of Turks enough to create an army from them. 2)For the purposes of the question, the mercenary group in question must be out of the Ural-Altaic family. 3)Preferably non-naval mercenaries as our naval history doesnt go that back.

Thanks for your time.

How surprising was it in the context of the time that George Washington voluntarily gave up power?

I have seen the suggestion that when Washington's second term ended, it came as a surprise or was even seen as a selfless act that he walked away from power. How much of this is part of our own myth making and how much of is true? Did some Americans and Europeans expect that Washington would set himself up as all but a king for life, replacing one tyrant with another?

Why was the American War of Independence Isolated to the 13 colonies?

In addition to the 13 colonies on the Atlantic seaboard of what is now the east coast of the US, Britain had many other North American colonies. Canada, Nova Scotia, St. Jean (Prince Edward Island), Newfoundland, Bermuda, East/West Florida and Rupert's Land.

From my understanding there were overtures to Canadians to get them to join the war on the side of the rebels. I can't see much evidence for Continental Congress making similar overtures to Nova Scotians, Newfoundlanders, or other colonials.

What is the reason for this? The vast majority of Canadians back in those days were French speaking. So the American colonials culturally had more in common with Newfoundlanders, Nova Scotians and Bermudans. Were these areas simply too cut off from the 13 colonies?

Looking for books covering Russian history from 1890-1953

Hello.

I was looking for books on Russian history from 1890s-1953.

A lot of attention is given to the revolution of 1917 and the years that followed. However I have an avid interest in the events leading up to that as well as the period after that.

What I'm looking for,

The poor economic and social situation in the late Russian Empire and 1890s famine, the loss to Japan, failed revolution of 1905 and disaster in WW1 (1900-1917). More depth info on Russian Tsar's policies in Russia such as the secret police and other conditions, WW1 leading to the revolution will be welcomed.

Accumulation and breaking point - 1917 revolution and removal of the Tsar.

Russian civil war -1917 -1922.

Lenin years - 1917-1924.

Early Stalin years - 1924-1939

USSR in WW2 - 1939-1945.

Late Stalin years and the Cold War 1945-1953.

I'm particularly interested in the Bolsheviks and their policies in running the USSR with their secret police, repression, purges, propaganda and famines.

I'm sorry if this was asking for too much but I'll really appreciate any good recommendations.

Thank you.

How did soldiers of The Great War wors their letters home?

I'm writing a collection of short stories and the first one is about my great grandfather's time in the artillery, in the story he is writing a letter home to his mother (gives me an excuse to tell the reader what life in the artillery was like) and I'm unsure how to word it, this is what I've got:

Dear Mum,

I am writing this from the fields of France on the 5th of September.

This is what I don't know how to say, would soldiers write the date and location like that? How is the whole thing formatted? Any and all help is welcome thanks!

Today:

You know the drill: this is the thread for all your history-related outpourings that are not necessarily questions. Minor questions that you feel don't need or merit their own threads are welcome too. Discovered a great new book, documentary, article or blog? Has your Ph.D. application been successful? Have you made an archaeological discovery in your back yard? Did you find an anecdote about the Doge of Venice telling a joke to Michel Foucault? Tell us all about it.

As usual, moderation in this thread will be relatively non-existent -- jokes, anecdotes and light-hearted banter are welcome.

Today, 75 years ago, Nijmegen's city centre was destroyed in what has been called an 'erroneous' bombardment by the Allies. What is the reason that it has been called an erroneous bombardment?

I'm asking this since I am aware that recently (only 10 years ago or so) it has come to light that the bombers were in fact aware that they had bombed a Dutch city, rather than having mistaken the city for one of the nearby German cities. Is it only because it was uncomfortable news that the Allies had bombed a friendly (though occupied) nations territory or are there other possible reasons?

I am currently living in Nijmegen, and even in the present time there is only little attention for this bombardment compared to, say, the German bombardment of Rotterdam in WWII. I don't want to give the impression that both actions are in any way comparable to another, just want to know a little more about the place I live in on a day like this.

Why is Odoacer considered “the first king of Italy” and not just another Roman Emperor? What sets Odoacer apart from other general-turned-ruler of the western empire?

Lots of “barbarian” or Germanic generals became emperor though, and Odoacer has the backing of the Eastern emperor to rule in his name - does that not make him Caesar?
