What happens to secured loans and unsecured loans in countries undergoing a massive conflict?

I hope this isn't too simplistic, and dumb, of a question. However, through the world wars, Former Yugoslavia, and now the many civil conflicts around the world (Ukraine, Syria, Iraq, etc.), I am always curious of what happens to people with mortgages, as well as unsecured loans, mostly. When a civil war, or invasion happens, are people still expected to pay their mortgage and unsecured loans during the conflict?

Japan-SU relation in WW2

Why did Japan make a non-aggression pact with the SU during WW2? Wouldn't it have been more rational, to attack them and help out the nazis, instead of attacking the USA?

Senate Sergeant At Arms and Caning of Sumner

Did the Senate Sergeant At Arms Dunning Robert McNair express his opinions about the Preston Brooks’ caning of Charles Sumner? Did McNair receive much public rebuke or praise for the handling of the affair? Were there any procedural or security changes in the Senate chambers following Sumner’s beating?

Culturally, who were the people of geographic Wales before the arrival of the Romans in the first century? How (if at all) were they separate from the Britons?

I'm just trying to get my head around this. I've read a lot indicating that 'Britons' was used to refer to a general grouping of loose and un-unified tribes, and I've also found that Wales was also composed of loose tribes. So I'm wondering what distinction there would be between them.

Taxation in 17th century

My friend is making a sort of strategy game that’s based in the 17th century and he’s wondering what the tax rate was back then. I tried to find it on the internet but I couldn’t really find anything so here I am. Could someone help me. By the way I’m mainly asking for tax rates in Western Europe. You don’t need to give me an exact number just an estimate.

Why was the Algarve considered to be a separate kingdom to Portugal from 1249-1910?

Hello all,

I have a question relating to Portuguese history that perhaps someone can answer for me.

Consider the titular title, "King of Portugal and the Algarves" that was adopted by the Portuguese sovereign in the Middle Ages. Why is it that the Algarve was considered to be a separate kingdom from Portugal despite the fact that the titular Kingdom of the Algarve did not have separate legal institutions or privileges from Portugal proper? Was it indeed just that: titular? Or was there something deeper and more profound in the separation of the kingdoms on paper?

Thank you!

Utsa Patnaik's 45 Trillion Claim

This article references a claim by the Marxist economic historian Utsa Patnaik that Britain "drained 45 trillion from India during the period 1765 to 1938".

My initial reaction was to be skeptical of this figure due to:

  1. How large a figure it is (and that it doesn't mention 45 trillion of what)
  2. The inflammatory language used
  3. The potential for either nationalistic/ideological bias
  4. A general mistrust of economic modelling/ counterfactuals
  5. My thought that 5% compound interest over hundreds of years is unrealistic.

I am not an expert though and want to learn more. Could I please ask any economic historians to either corroborate or contradict the figure of 45 trillion?

Thank you in advance.

Was there any historical theory of a possible relationship between Japanese and Incas or other S. American natives that could justify any political-racial claim by the Japanese over Peru during WWII?

There was a strong wave of Japanese immigration to Peru during the period comprising the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. But, what I really need to know is that if at anytime during that period any historical theory, even if fringe or far-fetched, was developed within Japanese academic environment that would claim any racial-cultural-historic relationship between the Japanese people/culture and the Incas or even South American natives in general.

I am writing a short story that uses as background a Japanese intervention in Peru based on a racial relationship claim between Japanese and Quechua. The Japanese use that as an excuse to intervene in Peru to support an insurrection of Native peoples and Japanese immigrants allied against people from European ancestry and Criollos that controlled the government and Peru's institutions.

Just wondering if there was any possible historical theory that could justify Japanese imperialism and interventionism towards Peru. TIA for any reply.

What methods are used by historians to answer counterfactuals?

There is a genre of fiction where the setting is in a world historically similar to ours up until some divergence point. It explores a narrow topic, such as what happens if the American Revolution was won by the British instead of the Revolutionaries. What would that world look like in the 1780s, the 1800s, or even the 1900s?

This came about while reading a book (An Era of Darkness by Shashi Tharoor) and wondering what would have happened had the East India Company had never gotten a foothold in India, and whether or not the scenario could have fit historically.
