The Young Turks

So I just did an assignment on it and I had the hardest time finding decent articles for it and I was wondering if you guys had read any good articles or books on it because I would really like to learn more about it, other then the Armenian genocide. Most of the articles I found were on the genocide. And thanks in advance for any help you give.

How accurate it is to say that following the conquest of Mexico the native people still held control over the region and worked more in cooperation with the spanish than as conquered peoples?

I was reading a thread the other day about the spanish destruction of Tenochtitlán. A few of the comments suggested that rather than the spanish coming to outright dominate the people of Mexico quickly, that rather their control was tenuous at best. Although they liked to paint a picture of loyal christian subjects under firm control of the crown the reality was much closer to the people of Mexico still holding control and working more with the spanish than as subjugated people. I would take this to mean that it would still be centuries before Mexico was firmly under spanish control and that it would paint a picture of more gradual assimilation than domination.

Could somebody catch me up to our current scholarly understanding of Manichaeism?

I'm sorry if this question is worded a little vaguely, but it relates to an issue that applies not just to me personally, but to anyone with an interest in this semi-forgotten religion.

I became interested in Mani and his teachings after coming in contact with the texts of Nag Hammadi. However, I have found the task of actually obtaining reliable material in English translation to be far more difficult than any previous attempt to learn about a new culture or tradition, to the point where I feel that I need to consult a scholar of either history or religion to make any further progress.

The first and best source for an English account of what Mani taught appears to be Duncan Greenlees' "The Gospel of the Prophet Mani", whose author (an absolute saint) took the many often fragmentary primary and secondary accounts dating back to when the tradition was practiced, translated the vast majority of these dozen plus languages into English himself, and organized the quotation by theme after giving a lengthy introduction to the work. However, to say nothing of the potential for mistranslation from having a single person work with so many languages, the fact is that GotPM was written in the 1940s, yet it is still the most recommended overview of the tradition given by both scholars and sites like Amazon. There are also some excellent translations of the Kephalaia (which as far as I know is the longest extant Manichaean text) and some of the Chinese hymns in Meyer and Barnstone's "The Gnostic Bible".

Save these two sources and a handful of lectures by scholars and contemporary religious figures (i.e. Stephan Hoeller of the Ecclesia Gnostica), I can find virtually no English resources on the teachings of Mani. This is obviously a huge problem because I have to assume that scholars have been working on better understanding Mani's corpus since Greenlees' day, yet I can find nothing written for a general audience (or at least written in English in a way that is comprehensible to a knowledgeable layman) that covers what new advances have been made in Manichaean studies, and there is no other field of study that I am aware of that would use a book predating the second world war as the best tool for learning about a tradition.

Thus I have two questions for people who have a scholarly background that intersects with Mani's life and teaching. First, I have heard rumors dating as far back as the 1980's of large quantities of Manichaean texts being discovered and then ending up in a Dead Sea Scroll-esque limbo due to scholars taking forever to ensure their initial interpretation is thorough enough to not immediately get overthrown by new research. However, I have no way of knowing whether any of these texts have since been published, so if anyone has any knowledge of "recent" (i.e. post WWII) translations/discoveries of Manichaean texts, I would be grateful. Second, I would love to have access to any contemporary writings on Mani's teachings. There are universities that study Manichaeism, which in turn means that there are graduate students actively studying the religion, and I have to imagine that these students are using resources that are more up to date than what I have, yet I really cannot find any books for sale online that seem to fill this gap.

EDIT: I don't recall adding the Oceania flair to this post, but I can't find a way to remove it. There used to be a drop down list in the old version of the site but I can't find it now. If a mod wants to fix it for me I would be grateful.

Why did The Quebec Agreement limit UK nuclear power after WW2?

It seems bizarre that the UK government would agree to restricting its atomic power production after the war at the request of the United States. Was this a blow to British sovereignty at the time? Details here

I have a deep interest in that dark time in the world, but I've never read a book about it. I would like to know what it was like fighting there, such as a personal experiences of someone that fought amongst the allieds there from beginning to end. But anything else that comes to mind is welcomed but has to be non-fiction.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Did the Dutch adopt the Rolling block?

I found it on a few places, but no official adoption date, no order numbers, nor a license to manufacture them, nor a rifle replaced them. so I don't know what to think I've seen a lot of Danish rolling blocks, but the authors keep switching between calling it Dutch an Danish, did the Danish sell them to the Dutch? Or is that just them mixing the two up?

After the Marian reforms, Rome required soldiers to server 25 years, did they have an older army or was the death rate very high?

If soldiers are required to server for 25 years either they had an army made up heavily of older soldiers or they had a very high death/injury rate where soldiers could not last the full 25 years.

Do we know how frequently soldiers lasted 25 years? If soldiers joined at 16-20, that would make them 41-45 when they got out. What did older Soldiers do? There are only so many centurions. Were they still in combat at 40?

Any accessible books of particular note on the history and origins of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that are pretty widely considered to be responsible treatments?

My dad has taken an interest in this topic lately, but aside from some debates he seems to be watching with guys like Norman Finkelstein, he's mostly been reading popular level treatments and highly controversial/sloppy works like Joan Peters' "From Time Immemorial". I'm thinking of getting him a couple of books for Christmas. Maybe one that's more pro-Israel in its leanings and one that's more pro-Palestine for perspective? Length isn't much of an issue, he likes to read. I just need something that wouldn't be opaque to a well-read layperson, but also fairly represents expert disagreements in their strongest forms. If I had to pick just two, what would be some of the safer choices?

The book list has some suggestions (maybe Righteous Victims paired with The Iron Cage? Or Charles Smith's book paired with one of the Morris books?), but I wanted to get a broader range of opinions, and find out which might be better suited to a person who's just getting into researching this topic.

Previous weeks!

Thursday Reading and Recommendations is intended as bookish free-for-all, for the discussion and recommendation of all books historical, or tangentially so. Suggested topics include, but are by no means limited to:

  • Asking for book recommendations on specific topics or periods of history

  • Newly published books and articles you're dying to read

  • Recent book releases, old book reviews, reading recommendations, or just talking about what you're reading now

  • Historiographical discussions, debates, and disputes

  • ...And so on!

Regular participants in the Thursday threads should just keep doing what they've been doing; newcomers should take notice that this thread is meant for open discussion of history and books, not just anything you like -- we'll have a thread on Friday for that, as usual.

Intellectual history of the concept of "redemption" in Western Civilization

I was reading a thread where people were debating redemption arcs for characters in media and someone said that "Christians stole the concept of redemption and ruined it" by making it so broad. This confused me and I've been thinking over it. I've tried Googling keywords that might get me more info but it's not really led anywhere. I thought the popularization of the idea came from Christianity. Is there some prior use of the concept in Western Civ that I'm unaware of which was "stolen"? If so, what was it? If not, when do current ideas of redemption (a change of heart and lifting of guilt/sin) really get popularized within the West?

When did the concept of a “brand” first come up? How did people differentiate products and their producers (if at all) before brands?

I always wonder... for example think of a guy in 17th century Europe walking into a bar. Would drinks be classified by brands/local names or just literally be called what they are?

Would for the fame of a great sword smith be comparable to a what brands represent today?

How about the romans? Assuming their swords and shields were standardized would that be considered a brand or did people just not think that way?

What were Catherine the Great favourite books from Voltaire?

Hello fellow History Nerds :)

As I am currently learning French and also have a huge interest in Europe during or shorlty before the enlightement, I tought, why not combine these 2 fields. So I decided that I would read some Books from Voltaire. But since he has over 700 Books I have to decide wich one I should read first.

I heard that Catherine the Great took inspiration from Voltaire's books and also recommended them to the Russian Nobels so I figured these would be good books to start.

So is there a Record wich books she did recommend?

Thank You
