Short Answers to Simple Questions | October 31, 2018

Previous weeks!

Please Be Aware: We expect everyone to read the rules and guidelines of this thread. Mods will remove questions which we deem to be too involved for the theme in place here. We will remove answers which don't include a source. These removals will be without notice. Please follow the rules.

Some questions people have just don't require depth. This thread is a recurring feature intended to provide a space for those simple, straight forward questions that are otherwise unsuited for the format of the subreddit.

Here are the ground rules:

  • Top Level Posts should be questions in their own right.

  • Questions should be clear and specific in the information that they are asking for.

  • Questions which ask about broader concepts may be removed at the discretion of the Mod Team and redirected to post as a standalone question.

  • We realize that in some cases, users may pose questions that they don't realize are more complicated than they think. In these cases, we will suggest reposting as a stand-alone question.

  • Answers MUST be properly sourced to respectable literature. Unlike regular questions in the sub where sources are only required upon request, the lack of a source will result in removal of the answer.

  • Academic secondary sources are prefered. Tertiary sources are acceptable if they are of academic rigor (such as a book from the 'Oxford Companion' series, or a reference work from an academic press).

  • The only rule being relaxed here is with regard to depth, insofar as the anticipated questions are ones which do not require it. All other rules of the subreddit are in force.

In 1780 John Adams attended a Catholic mass and described seeing "A picture in tapestry was hung up, of a number of Jews stabbing the wafer, the ban Diett, and blood gushing in streams from the bread." What's the "ban Diett?" Are there any surviving examples of tapestries such as this?

Main Arguments on Holocaust Deniers?

I am not 100% sure that this is the best place to post this, but what are the main counterpoints that are used by Holocaust deniers in arguments? Also, what were David Irving's main points and why do some believe that he is so correct and Deborah E. Lipstadt instead, was the one with the weak argument? I cannot find anything really detailed online that explains what and why they feel this way (I am also very bad at surfing the Internet so that could be my main problem).

Where can I read what the day to day life was like for a random king in middle ages Europe? Or an emperor or Shogun of China or Japan. Ideally in English that isn't too difficult to read.

I'd say my reading level is around college freshman or sophomore level.

I visited Bovington Tank Museum on Sunday. Within, I was informed that the Royal Navy used Armoured Cards before the British Army did, and that the earliest Tank development was undertaken by the Admiralty. Why and How?

No, seriously, how on Earth does the Navy get away with this? It seems very bemusing to me.

The 'Wyatt Earp effect' states that something statistically improbable (like someone repeatedly surviving a number of gunfights) becomes statistically highly likely to occur, given a large enough sample population; were gunfights really that common in the old West, or is that a creation of fiction?

German U-Boats (crew) effect on society

Is there any identifiable stem of anti-Semitism?

I'm aware of the root of many other racist stereotypes and prejudices, but I still don't understand anti-Semitism, especially given its continous prevalence throughout history.

Fighting until last minute of WW1

Why was there advancing (particularly by the allies) until the last minute before the armistice came into effect? Below is a quote from Wikipedia.

French commander-in-chief Marshal Foch refused to accede to the German negotiators' immediate request to declare a ceasefire or truce so that there would be no more useless waste of lives among the common soldiers. By not declaring a truce even between the signing of the documents for the Armistice and its entry into force, "at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month", about 11,000 additional men were wounded or killed – far more than usual, according to the military statistics.[12]

Who was next in line if Hitler had suddenly died before WW2

So I just started the atlantropa articles and in it Hitler dies in 1939 presumably before the invasion of Poland and start of WW2. Although I think that even without Hitler Nazi Germany would have still started WW2 because Hitler had been building up Germany's military and had plans in place. What I'm wondering is who would have taken over for Hotler if he had died and How they would have affected WW2

What does George Orwell mean when he said that "fruit juice drinkers" and "sandal-wearers" were attracted to socialism?

In "The road to Wigan Pier" published in 1937 Orwell says

"One sometimes gets the impression that the mere words ‘Socialism’ and ‘Communism’ draw towards them with magnetic force every fruit-juice drinker, nudist, sandal-wearer, sex-maniac, Quaker, ‘Nature Cure’ quack, pacifist, and feminist in England"

Exactly what was wearing sandals or drinking juice during this period were they health fads, fashion statements or something else? Did the general public assume somebody was a socialist or communist if you exhibited either behaviour?
