I recently learned of the danger posed by carrying a loaded single action revolver, because the hammer is resting on the firing pin/ percussion cap which can cause an unintended discharge surprisingly easily. So most gun guys or competition shooters will make it a habit to only load 5 rounds (or leave one chamber empty if they have more or less than 6 shots). Historically how did soldiers in, for example, the civil war balance carrying their weapon safely and having the maximum volume of rounds in their chambers? How did gunslinger or “shootists” carry their guns? Would they, for example, carry their holstered gun with an empty chamber but have extra cylinders loaded with all six with the logic that if they were reloading in a hurry they needed all six shots ready to go?

It feels like the only way to achieve the bodies depicted would be to actively train for a very fit body.
Now I know they lived a much different lifestyle back then- one that was much less sedentary, and I also recognize that depicting men in such a glorious and ideal way is obvious for a statue sculptor trying to make an epic piece of art, but it still feels like the men are in such perfect form, they would literally have to train all areas of their body like a bodybuilder, so to have a reference point for what muscles would look like once thoroughly developed there must have been some people the sculptors used.
Obviously if there were 10 out of 100 men in a social group who were in very good shape then they would stand out.

So I just stumbled across this theory that the Holy Roman Emperor Otto III, Pope Sylvester II, and possibly the Byzantine Emperor Constantine VII, fabricated the Anno Domini dating system retrospectively, in order to place them at the special year of AD 1000, and to rewrite history to legitimize Otto's claim to the Holy Roman Empire.
Here is an interesting Video about it:

What is your opinion about this?

What was life like for thralls in medieval Scandinavia? How well/badly were they treated? Were thralls generally captives, people born to Thrall parents, or what? What kind of percentage of the population did they make up? Could Thralls be freed, and did this often happen? How were relationships between female thralls and freemen treated? How about between male thralls and freewomen? And lastly, in the fairly low-population-density lands of Scandinavia, what methods were used to stop thralls running away?

Many harbors after the fall of Rome were either abandoned because they silted up, or had to move because the coast eventually moved out to sea and the original location was now far inland. In some cases they ended up miles away from the ocean after a few centuries. Clearly it was a costly and labor intensive task or else post roman societies would have continued it. I believe it involved some sort of boat with an "arm" of some sort to dig up the sediment, but I have not come across any detailed explanation of how exactly romans would remove thousands of square feet of mud from the bottom of the harbor?

For example, in my home state, California, the University of California system is home to two of the most prestigious universities in the world (in academics and athletics) and several others with top rankings, and is generally considered much more selective than the equivalent California State University system, which, with the exception of a few more well-known schools like Cal State Fullerton, tends to cater to local students, and is generally less prestigious. Many other states also feature this system.
EDIT: As a couple of commenters have questioned how common this system is. It exists in more or less this form in the following states

The decision to bomb Hiroshima has been covered extensively. Yet I Can’t find a lot of sources that explain why the second bomb was utilized only 3 days after. I remember reading that there was no actual specific presidential order to bomb Nagasaki, rather than an authorization to use any means necessary. Nagasaki wasn’t even one of the chosen targets initially and was only later added. Only because visibility issues over Kokura the target changed to Nagasaki.
So what I'm asking is: Why did the U.S. decide on using another atom bomb?
What was the decision-making process in that decision?
Why was Nagasaki Chosen eventually as the target?

Hi, historians. I hope this question isn’t too stupid or insulting. I’ve been reading about Child ballads and I’m curious... how did Child discern or verify that these poems and folktales were actually oral tradition and not made up entirely by the people publishing them as broadsheets? What do modern historians have to say about the origins of the ballads?

Hello,
I'm wondering about the Climate of Ancient Ethiopia, and what it would have been like roughly 50,000 years ago, and also if there are any places in modern day that would have a similar climate to Ancient Ethiopia that one can draw a mental picture from.
Also, what would ancient humans have hunted in that area back then?
I heard it was cooler in general, but I can't seem to find any resources online that talk about prehistoric Ethiopia in detail.

My understanding is that the allies built him up both to excuse their own failures (Montgomery) and, later, to provide continuity for the new German army as the Cold War settled in.
How is he viewed by historians now?

I mean, he pretty much dominated the Allies in the Continent until his diaster invading Russia. Were they ever planning to make peace before that on French terms? If they did, why didn’t Napoleon accept?

The game is set in the last decade of the 19th century I believe. 'Dutch's gang' consists of men who are native/African American, Irish immigrants, German immigrants, Mexican immigrants. Would we have seen this kind of mix of people in outlaw gangs in the American West ?

I just learned in my APUSH class about the rise of Mormonism in the 1800's and from all the facts, I don't understand why it succeeded far more than any other movements. Somebody claiming to have a third part of the Bible just seems like it shouldn't have worked. What factors led to the rise of Mormonism in America?

Hi there!
I was hoping those of you knowledgeable about Ottoman history can help me place a story about my Palestinian grandfather, he was born in the late 1890s, and I believe he was about 20 when this occurred, so the late days of the Ottoman empire. It's possible this is during WWI, but I am not sure.
My grandfather was a soldier in one of the Palestine regiments of the Ottoman empire's army. Apparently, he was out at sea as a young man and was shot - and ended up spending months in a coma in India. This is all the information that I have.
Did this occur during WWI? I read there were active Palestine regiments during Ottoman times, and same participated in naval activities, but how would he have ended up in India?
Please keep in mind these are all the details I have at this time, he passed long before I was born and my family doesn't have all of the details. Some of my older family members may have more, but they are v old & currently far away and I didn't have a chance to ask on my last visit.
