Why hasn't Switzerland taken any heat for not helping Germany during WWII? They provided supplies and did not fight against them.

Did the Middle Ages create a legacy of genetic tolerance for alcohol?

I have heard it said that the Middle Ages changed the genetic makeup of the European population to be more tolerant of alcohol, through a kind of Darwinistic weeding out of those who were most negatively affected by it, both physically and cognitively. There was so much alcohol during the middle ages, so the story goes, and it was so suddenly a major factor on cultural development, that alcohol tended to ruin lives and end the blood lines of those who were most (genetically) effected. The result is that the more alcohol tolerant blood lines were more likely to live on past the Middle Ages and therefore the gene pool as a whole is more

The Asian populations did not have a period like this and even less so the native Americans. So in those populations today there are still physical complications associated with alcohol that are much more prevalent than in the West, namely the symptoms that come with "Asian flush" such as headaches, dizziness, palpitations, and nausea occurring to a much greater degree in Asian drinkers than with Western drinkers. The incidence of "alcohol flush reaction" are not limited to Asia, but Asians are more genetically predisposed to it.

Is there any truth to the idea the Middle Ages played a role in all this?

What oppositions were there, if any, to Augustus’s rise to emperor?

Of course, besides the breakdown of the triumvirate and civil war with Marc Antony.

I would assume there were holdovers from the senate who still despised Julius Caesar and would have resisted his ascension to perpetual consulship. Maybe they would have tried to withhold imperium or denied the multitude of awards they threw on him? I’ve been reading and listening to stuff, but never heard anything about his opposition.

Why would France think that something like the Maginot line would be effective when they had ample experience from WW1 and the Schlieffen plan?

Seen a lot of joke and memes about French incompetence in this matter. So I was hoping for a more direct, accurate explanation. :)

Why did France and Great Britain not also declare war on the Soviet Union for invading Poland in 1939?

Given the pre-WW2 agreements and alliances between France, Great Britain, and Poland which guaranteed the latter's independence, why did the Allies not also declare war on the Soviet Union when they also invaded Poland shortly after Germany did?

What do historians have to say about the destruction of the National Museum of Brazil?

Brazil's most important historical museum was destroyed in a fire today. How does this impact historical study and the historical profession both in Brazil and abroad? Or about the preservation of historical artifacts in the Global South?

I guess it's a very open-ended question; I am just hoping for any insight from professionals or experts who can approach the subject from a more educated point of view. What was lost?

What is the history behind the shift in Satan being regarded as an agent of God in Orthodox Judaism to being seen as a entity separate from God in Christianity.

In Judaism Satan is not seen as a physical entity seperate from God from my understanding. While in Christianity, Satan is seen as autonomous figure. What is the historical basis, if any, for this shift in thinking? Edit: "punctuation"

HELP! Image Information

My mother recently passed away and left a bunch of photos behind. Out of all the photos, there was one with a person I've never seen before and none of my family knows who or where this person is from (see link below)

Does anyone recognize the shirt/emblem? Any information would be appreciated.

What was the composition of Crusader Armies?

I was wondering that, when we think of the crusades we think of the traditional Knight in mail armor and a greathelm, often a Knights Templar (the ones with the red cross), but how many Knights even were in these crusader armies compared to other troops? What kind of troops were taken along? Crossbowmen, Archers, Peasant Levies, anyone other than Knights are not really talked about.

And I know "Crusades" are broad, but I'm not really wondering about any specific one, so any of the Crusades will do.

I know nothing about the Middle East and I want to understand it more. What's one book you would recommend?

I know that the Middle East is typically rife with conflict. But how and why did it get there?

What is one book you would recommend to a novice on Middle Eastern history? One that is detailed, yet concise and easy to read. One that doesn't focus on personal accounts, but on a general overview. And most importantly, one that is written from a more "Arab" perspective. I am not interested in reading about how magnificent Israel is, or how the US was just trying to save the day. I want to know how the Arabs themselves have been affected.

The main topic I'm interested in is how American foreign policy has affected the Middle East (especially in Afghanistan while it was trying to fight off the Soviets, as well as Iran and Libya) so if there's a book that does a good job of explaining the role of the US and its effects on the Middle East, please recommend it.

Other topics I'm interested in are the Ottoman Empire and British rule, the Armenian genocide, Syria (who is Assad? what has he done? and why is there a civil war there?), Kurdistan and Iran (I heard Iran was fairly progressive before US foreign policy), and American foreign policy in Libya (I have no idea what went on there either).
