I wanted to start Guns, Germs, and Steel until I read some of the FAQ posts on here about it. I'm really looking for a good book on history/archaeology, but I'm pretty tired of 500+ page nonfiction.
Can I get some recommendations for very good history books that are around 300 pages?

Was interracial marriage viewed as acceptable in Elizabethan England? How would audiences of the time react to a black or middle eastern character being married to a white woman?

I mean, the countries on the Arabic peninsula (and Iran?) are now the most conservative, while many of their neighbors (i.e. Turkey, although they seem to be going backwards) are more moderate. How did this development in fundamentalism/conservatism come to be? Why those countries, not their neighbors? Maybe the fact was the other way around at one point in history, which I in that case am willing to admit that I’ve missed.

Why was there a change in how Senators are chosen?
Representatives were intended to be chosen by and represent the people while Senators were chosen by and represented the states. What was going on in the early 1900's that drove the change in the selection and purpose of Senators and why were individual state governments, which had to ratify the amendment, willing to give up that power?
Edit: never mind u/bobblebobble directed me to a previous post that answered my question.

Why is this considered a worse punishment than what Romanos told? Is it related to Seljuk culture? Did it mean Romanos would have to live the rest of his days with the knowledge of his defeat and capture?

Hey everyone, I've been really interested in T.E. Lawrence (AKA Lawrence of Arabia) for a long time, but I'm not really sure where to look for material about him. Where can I go to learn about his life?

Or any time during the modern period, really, I just thought WWI would be the best expamle. Did any of the Christian allies have goals for retaking Jerusalem (from the Ottomans, in the case of WWI) and surrounding areas for holy purposes?

I can't think of a bigger example of nepotism at such a high level of government in the United States.
Did the Senate or the press object?

I know they were in a shortage of Oil before attacking pearl harbor, But why didn't they attack the eastern part of Russia to help the Nazi's conquer the USSR? There would have been plenty of Oil for anyone there...
So why did they prefer to attack the USA and fight alone against a much stronger enemy, without giving aid to an ally that was losing ground? What would have happened if they did a Joint attack with the Germans against the Soviets from the start of Operation Barbarossa? Would it have been possible? Would it be successful?
Thx to all!

Being a young amateur WWII historian I don't have anywhere to ask questions. Looking at photographs of German tanks I noticed that on the thicker armor plating there is some sort lining that looks almost like rows of caulking. I'm not sure how to post pictures on here so here is a link to a picture, you will see the lines on the turret. http://bit.ly/2sYW8Hh

Have been checking out different books on the same and haven't found out the right one yet. All the books seem to be in the Islamic or Biblical point of view. Would be happy if I get a centrist view of the same

I was wondering when and why people started using gay (which means carefree or happy) as a slang for a homosexual person?

The "fairy" being an airborne thistle seed, or the parachute left over after the seed has gone.
I first heard this tradition in NZ in the 90s from my mother, but a bit of internet searching pulls up results from the UK and Australia. At my school, you'd say your wish over it then release it without damaging it, but a minority believed you had to tear off one of its bristles.

I'm about to sign up for an undergraduate honors thesis at my university. I originally wanted to study the changes/continuities in day-to-day life and urbanization in the region of the Western Roman Empire immediately prior to and in the centuries after 476 C.E., but the professor I approached to be my faculty advisor (a prominent historian of Ancient Rome) advised me that there would be far more primary sources available if I studied the Eastern Roman Empire/Byzantine Empire in that same period. So, I plan to focus on changes and continuities in urbanization and day-to-day life in western Anatolia. The professor specifically advised me to look into the excavations of Ephesus and another city which I cannot remember (didn't have time to take out paper for notes).
Does anybody have any advice on undertaking an honors thesis? My longest paper ever was 10 pages, and this is supposed to be 40-60 pages. Additionally, does anybody have any input on my research area? I haven't yet submitted the application for a thesis, as the professor just agreed to supervise me today. I still have time to edit the topic.

I was watching Moana with my nephew when I started thinking about the extent of contact they had with other civilizations, which led to the question of if they thought they were the only humans on Earth, and even if the Hawaiian islands were the only pieces of land on Earth.
Their religion has clear ties to other Polynesian religions, which shows their descent, but did they know that they were descendants of people from other islands, or did they have a creation story where the gods placed humanity on the Hawaiian islands and that's it?
Sorry for the repetitiveness in this; I'm just trying to be as clear as possible.

Say for example I exported steel to the USSR right before the events of 1991 and had payment pending.
Also, is there an office that currently handles all unfinished business of the USSR? Who owns the copyright for all the signage/logos of the USSR now?
