Can a historian be job? I love history so much and I’d love to make a living out of it someday. Are there any historians out there that could help guide me in the right direction?

How and why is the fourth oldest mosque in the world in China?

The Huaisheng Mosque is supposedly built in 627, during the Prophet Muhammad's lifetime. Did the Muslims really have contact with the Chinese and have Chinese converts that early in their history?

Why did Himmler manipulate birth rate statistics?

Before "Lebensborn" Was founded by Heinrich Himmler, he spread the lie that the birth rate of german, healthy children in germany was drastically dropping.

But why did he that? Have I just misunderstood something and that's simply wrong?

Did he want to rise concern in the german population? But for what reason?

Or was it to lay the foundation of his idea of "Lebensborn". So the population would react better on it's foundation.

Huge thanks in upfront, you are a real lifesaver for me and my upcoming school presentation!

How did a seemingly minor Tiananmen Square Incident in 1989 impact China in a huge way?

DISCLAIMER: This question was asked as part of a crowdsourced consultancy. I am required to research and write an essay on the above title (although slightly modified to be more broad) and I'd like to gather your professional opinion on this topic.

First off, the tiananmen incident of 1989 seems to be an isolated incident at first, but upon reading up, it seems that at that time there was a lot of internal political instability and unstable economy because of the market reforms.

It seems that Deng Xiaoping removed Zhao Ziyang ( a reformist ) during the protests for supporting the protesters, but later went on to reform at an even greater pace. Why?

Did the incident spark any internal government hierarchy/system change?

This article by Time seems to say that a huge change happened (they split up politics and economy) but I haven't found any sources on it yet; also, why was such a change so successful?

Help identify this vessel mom found ~15 years ago

Apparently, a tractor was ploughing the earth and this turned up (~15 years ago), broken into many pieces (was glued together later). Here is a link to the album: https://imgur.com/a/vrRxm

Is it Ceramic ? It certainly does not look like pottery, the substance feels kind of "glassy". How old could it be ? What was it used for ?

I don't think it could be that old because it is too round and good-looking and symmetrical, I think the craftsmanship is too good for anything other than relatively modern. But, I want it to be as old as history!

Nearly 24 years ago in a 1994 episode of Seinfeld, George says holding in a urination is bad for your kidneys. Elaine ask how he knows that and he just says "Medical Journals". What was the background of people's access to medical journals back then to interpret how plausible that lie was?

Like today, it's pretty easy to survey study and review abstracts and even browse certain articles online. It wouldn't be alien for George Costanza to have access to a medical journal today. But I have no idea what public access to medical journals was like back then. In the context of the show, it is clearly a lie because George is just a huge liar. But I'm curious if audiences back then could have imagined some way George Costanza was going around reading medical journals or even if they knew what medical journals were like.

What was the last battle in which biplanes were used?

Considering that biplanes were made obsolete a long time ago due to the advent of efficient monoplanes, and made totally obsolete when the jet engine became popular, but I've been wondering, when in history was the last known usage of biplanes in battle? Whether it being in a combat or recon role?

Do ancient drawings exist which depict their subject with realistic 3D perspective?

It seems to me that almost all ancient drawings show the subjects from the side, without much 3 dimensional perspective. Some examples of what I mean:

Do there exist any ancient drawings which depict their subject with realistic perspectives? For example:

Had ancient people simply not figured out how to do realistic perspective drawings? Or was it just not the 'style' at the time?

How did the young Republique Francaise feel about reviving monarchical rule under Napoleon so soon after getting rid of the old regime?

The French Revolution ended in 1799, removing the monarchy and the aristocracy. At this time, the commoners hated the Aristocracy. 1804, Napoleon became Emperor and effectively restored nobility throughout the French Empire, and gave countries to family members. How did the French people feel, 5 years after getting rid of the Crown to have it replaced, and how could they have allowed it? It's bizarre to imagine that they would have happily handed over the keys.

How can a non-student find all of the publications that a historian in New Testament studies published?

Hi, all. I'm not enrolled in a university currently, although I have limited access to some JSTOR articles.

I'm trying to assemble complete lists of publications for certain scholars who published in New Testament studies. Some of them have CVs online, but others don't.

When a scholar doesn't have a CV available online, what resources can I use to assemble a list of all of that scholar's publications?

Thanks!

Why was sieging castles so important in medeival warfare? Why didn't an invading force simply bypass a castle and target cities or other more strategic objectives?

Sure, leaving an intact castle behind could expose an invading army to sallies and supply harassment. But an army strong enough to lay siege to a castle would be larger than the defending force anyways, and many armies of the time fed off the countryside or from tribute of the lands they occupied.

Would a small garrison of castle defenders really be that dangerous to bypass for a large invading army, and wouldn't the invaders be better off focusing on attacking the capital, taking cities, pillaging the countryside, or other strategic objectives that would bring a war to a favorable conclusion, rather than spend so much time and effort sieging down every castle on its path?

Who became a Fascist?

I was recently read [this] (https://harpers.org/archive/1941/08/who-goes-nazi/) article, written in 1941, that attempted to profile which sets of people were inclined/disinclined to support fascist ideologies. After reading this article, I had a few questions regarding political demography during the 1930's/1940's.

  • Which demographics tended to support fascist ideologies? Which demographics were most opposed to those same ideologies?
  • Were any attempts made to use data, collected via survey, to answer the above question in the 1930's/1940's? Or were all attempts to do this based off of personal experience/anecdote, like the article above?
  • Has modern-day scholarship largely agreed, or disagreed, with the demographic profiles made in the 1930's/1940's, if they exist?

Why were Native Americans not enslaved?

I hope I don't offend anyone with this question but why was it acceptable to enslave and trade Africans as slaves but not the Native Americans. Would it not have been cheaper to capture slaves locally rather than transport them from across Atlantic. The settlers were just as brutal in their treatment of the Native Americans as they were towards Africans, why were they never looked upon as source of readily avaiable slaves?

Edit: thank you everyone for your wonderful and informative replies! I think I am getting the picture now. You guys are amazing!!

How did Native Americans in Canada survive the massive snow dumps and -20/-30 degree weather?

Checking my app, it says it feels like -28. How did the Native Americans survive this? I understand they had clothing made out of skins but even so... did they hunt in these garments? What happened if they got wet from snow? How did they get food when there’s three, four layers of snow 90cm high? How could woman have children in these conditions? How can they survive in a teepee or long house with only fire when harsh winds, hail and a deep cold is all around them? Also why would they have continued into this territory after encountering this weather?

If you sent me out in my coat, warm food and a blanket right now, I don’t know how I would survive. How and why did they do it?

Why were the last Russian Czar and his family not saved by their cousins who ruled all over Europe?

I recently learned that Czar Nicholas II and his wife Alexandra were cousins with the royal families in England, Germany and other European nations. How could these other rulers let their cousins die in such brutal fashion? I understand that Czar Nicholas abdicated on his own free will - why did he not ensure that he or at least his family were protected?
