After finishing season 2 of The Crown I'm left wondering just how accurate the show is about the queen and her life. If you don't know what the show is I suggest checking it out but it's all about queen Elizabeth the second becoming the queen and the royal family. There's a lot of scandal in the show that just feels like added drama to make it more interesting so I thought to myself "reddit has the answers"

Any YouTube videos or internet articles, or maybe even documents (If so, please tell me which channels show these things)

Today:
You know the drill: this is the thread for all your history-related outpourings that are not necessarily questions. Minor questions that you feel don't need or merit their own threads are welcome too. Discovered a great new book, documentary, article or blog? Has your Ph.D. application been successful? Have you made an archaeological discovery in your back yard? Did you find an anecdote about the Doge of Venice telling a joke to Michel Foucault? Tell us all about it.
As usual, moderation in this thread will be relatively non-existent -- jokes, anecdotes and light-hearted banter are welcome.

Additional optional questions: *How have those changes evolved over time? *How did a "socialist market economy" work differently than American capitalism at the time or the previous Chinese Communism? *Who are the key individuals/bodies who decided economic policy in the Chinese government? How were they appointed? *Before and after these policies changes, what kind of power can the Chinese government exert over (large and small) Chinese companies?
If anyone has book suggestions that provide an overview of the ideological and economic history of the Chinese government, particularly one that covers up to current day, I would really appreciate that as well!
Aside: My interest was sparked for this topic by reading this article on Wired about how the Chinese government is partnering with technology firms to create a "social credit" that allows them to influence behavior. The question I asked is relevant to this article because I'm interested to see how this fundamental policy change about private organizations has potentially aided China in furthering authoritarian control.

As the title said, the Bush administration gave assurances to Gorbatchev that NATO would not expand into the (then) USSRs and now Russias close proximity, but ended up expanding east-ward and inviting other nations in addition to an increased presence in Asia. Source
In addition to the above source, i read this article, where there is a lot of comments in how NATO is accused of trying to reach Sevastopol, and that Putin proposed an alternative defensive alliance in the years after the fall of the Sovjet Union. Is this true?
I guess to try to condense down my question: How did the (if accurately depicted) expansive actions of NATO affect the security situation in the years after the cold war?

E.g. clerk, store-man, would be glad to hear of more roles during those times.

I'm reading Young Stalin by Simon Sebag Montefiore. I'm it he mentions that the Okhrana prevented a 9/11 style attack on the Winter Palace. The plan was to ply a no plane loaded with exolovises into it. My question is how realistic is this for 1905 in Russia?

Maybe this is the wrong place to ask as this question is probably more sciencey than history. There's references all throughout history of stone buildings being "burned down", such as the temple of Artemis or Boudicca's burning of the temple of Claudius. How did this happen to buildings that to our knowledge, were made entirely of stone?

I'm talking about the crusade led by Pope Urban II, I tried doing some research regarding the topic, but did not bear fruit.
If anyone could help me learn more about how Islam reacted towards the first crusade, or if they were surprised I would appreciate it.
So far my understanding is that Islam had just taken over anatolia, which prompted byzantine call for aid to the pope. Pope sends whole ARMIES to help byzantine emperor, take over lands stolen from byzantine and also capture jersusalem. In my understanding, Islam was blindsided.

Genghis Khan and his successors are reported to have forced millions of artisans/craftsmen as slaves back to Karakorum in Mongolia. How come the population there is largely homogeneous? Are there any residual effects of this forced migrations due to Mongol invasions.

Was listening to The Buggles and started to think, was there any actual radio stars that were famous during the radio era, but were not able to transit to music videos? Or is this impossible to answer as mainstream music taste also changed during this time, and hard to say if it was videos or other factors?

Was having a discussion with some friends about legalities and power in groups and the idea of laws and states and this question came up. Was curious as to what real historians might think about this question.

I'm trying to grasp this quote better. I found it looking for something else but now I'm intrigued. Can anyone tell me what this means?

I’ve read about the attempt to get the siege considered a war crime at Nuremberg, which I understand was ultimately unsuccessful. Was there ever a similar attempt to hold the Finnish leadership accountable?

Was there a formal process, or did it just happen for whatever reason... ? Fill me in here!
EDIT: I get that the topic is broad (I always hear that about the middle ages; 1000 year window, lots of different states and all that), but I'm hoping people that study this can provide a clear and concise idea of the way things might have worked.

I'm fascinated by the idea of multiple journal articles addressing a single person's life from different angles. Here's the journal, by the way: https://link.springer.com/journal/12111/21/3/page/1
