I've been interested in this place for a while and there don't seem to be many books out there on the subject. I'm interested in the origin of the town and its peak before the big earthquake in 1692. I also want to read about the port's relationship with pirates. If anyone can point me towards some good reads it'd be a big help. Thanks in advance

This week, ending in November 30 2017:
Today's thread is for open discussion of:
History in the academy
Historiographical disputes, debates and rivalries
Implications of historical theory both abstractly and in application
Philosophy of history
And so on
Regular participants in the Thursday threads should just keep doing what they've been doing; newcomers should take notice that this thread is meant for open discussion only of matters like those above, not just anything you like -- we'll have a thread on Friday for that, as usual.

This may be an impossible question to answer, but it seems to me that to ancient peoples in the West and also elsewhere around the world honour has always been an extremely important concept (and still is in many places).
However, the paramount importance of honour appears to have gone in the West over the last 100 years.
Why?

As of recent I have been doing some research on what kind of helmets the Scythians wore in combat. I'm aware that they used Phrygian caps, Kuban helmets and headgear of Greek origin such as Corinthian, Chalcidian and Attic helmets. I have come across a group of helmets that I'm not very familiar with.

Any additional reading on MASHs during the Korean War in general would be greatly appreciated. I've already read a lot of Dr. Apel's memoir MASH: An Army Surgeon in Korea.

This is a question about the historical convention, not the etymology of the name. I know where Clovis/Louis/Ludwig/Luigi/etc. come from, I'm just wondering when and why historians decided that we should retroactively call the 5th century Frankish Hlodowig who converted to Catholicism "Clovis", but the 7th-8th century son of Charlemagne Ludovicus "Louis".

I'm sure that a frontal assault would struggle against the wall, but it was only so long. Couldn't invaders just go around it? Also, what events caused China to decide they needed a wall that massive?

Where was Czar Nicholas on Bloody Sunday (St. Petersburg, 1905). He wasn’t home when all the protesters were killed, and i’m wondering where he was.

For greater context. I've tried using Google, but I can't find any links that'll tell me what a "lot" is, in this context. What does he mean?

I am looking through a Postcard from WWI and it says "Write to Bank of Montreal 24 Cockspur St Trafalgar Square London and they will forward it."
What does that mean exactly? I was thinking that banks may have sent and received packages, but wouldn't they have mail for that? Other than that, would people casually send money overseas to people back home? I'm certain its not money because he is writing to his friend or co-worker it seems.

And if so, how viable were they, compared to similar weapons of the "long stick with pointy bit" variety?

I'm (planning on) writing a paper about the feasibility of the Schlieffen Plan and it's potential for victory, but the assignment requires a certain number of primary sources. This doesn't seem like the kind of topic where a general would keep a diary of his exact thoughts. But are there primary sources that would be useful for a student writing a short essay? Or is working through primary sources in this area more the work of a professional historian? Essentially I need help finding readings on the subject, because there seem to be an abundance of secondary sources, but not primary.
