Polygamy in Denmark during the 1700’s?

Hi!

I’m currently working on my family history and have discovered one of my ancestors - Jens Nielsen, 1744-1789 from Roskilde, Denmark. One record has listed 6 different wives. Is that possible or is it more likely to be an inaccurate entry?

Thank you in advance!

The Royal Proclamation of 1763 describes the indigenous peoples of North America as sovereign peoples, under the protection of the British Crown. What changed to recast indigenous peoples into the role of non-sovereign subject populations?

Here in Canada, the Prolamation is so important that it was enshrined in the 1982 Constitution, and I've even seen the Proclamation of 1763 described as Canada's first constitution.

What were the contemporary reactions to this legal enshrinement of indigenous sovereignty? How did it get undone?

Why did the US not begin to develop their first assault rifle at the same time as other countries?

The first assault rifles were developed during WW2 by Germany(StG44). Shortly after, the Soviet Union followed with the Kalashnikov guns and countries such as Belgium also started developing their guns. Why did the US not try to keep up with this arms race and only released it's first assault rifle in 1964(M16)? Also, what effect did this have on events such as the Korean War?

How did a mercenary company like the White Company actually operate on a day to day basis?

I'm doing some initial groundwork for a story I want to tell in a game I am writing, and I was wondering how a mercenary company actually operated.

My specific questions would be:

  • Did they maintain a constant roster of people? Or did they work more like a temp agency?
  • Would they have kept paying their soldiers when they weren't on a contract?
  • Would they have been paid per battle? Year?
  • How would a potential client contact them? Would the mercenaries advertise?
  • If it was essentially like hiring an army, how did they make ends meet between contracts?

As I write these I realise that different companies could work in different ways depending on the contract. I'm thinking more about the Condottieri around the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries but I might just be biased because the Wikipedia article on the Condottieri has some good information about the business side.

Xenophon's Ten Thousand seem to be a collection of many different mercenary groups. Would it have been normal for rulers to loan out units from their armies in times to get them experience in times of peace? If not, where did these men come from?

Are there any articles or books people can recommend? I'm very much interested in the day to day business side of running a mercenary company. Any period would be of interest!

I had posted this on /r/history a year ago, but didn't get much traction

Did people from New York City's 5 boroughs originally consider themselves to be part of the same city?

I recently found out that the five boroughs consolidated to form New York City in 1898. Did people from Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island, Brooklyn and Queens consider themselves to be just parts of a single metropolis before then?

On a speculative note, had the Subway system been set up differently, would Manhattan and Brooklyn be considered more like San Fracisco and Oakland?

What are some good resources on the wars of Italian Unification?

I'm traveling to Italy in January, and I thought it might be nice to know how the modern Italian state developed. I know that Italy started out as a bunch of independent city-states (Rome, Venice, Florence, etc) and that they were unified at around the same time as Germany. What are some good resources on how Italy was unified?

Was black a bad color to wear in Ancient Greece besides mourning? What was the dating of Alcman the poet of Ancient Sparta?

There was much linking between black and Haides, the lord of the dark world, as it hinted death, so was it even more ominous a color for clothes than in our age? Did common people not care about it or were the "virtuous" people who cared not for such superstitions?

Is there some clue to the dating of Alcman? He speaks, among other things, of the Tyndaridai, so maybe he was of a late Archaic date? Or perhaps an earlier date? It seems to me that he should be before Tyrtaios, and that Tyrtaios should be at the time of Theopompos which was the time of the gradual conquest of Messenia, and before the time of Anaxandridas when the gradual alliance with the Peloponnese was done. But I just don't know, so please someone can reach out a thoughtful reflection?

What are the roots of this distinctively monumental style of Soviet architecture?

I'm not talking about the endless rows of Brutalist panelaks here, but landmarks that seem designed with an eye to aesthetics, buildings where form plays at least as much a role as function. They seem distinctly...Eastern Bloc.

Examples are: Georgia's Ministry of Highways Slovak radio building Zizkov Tower in Prague

I've seen the Zizkov Tower and the Slovak radio building in person and both seemed to my untrained eye inhumanly oppressive and sharing some aesthetic principles. Am I projecting or cherry picking here, or is there a particular "school" unique to Soviet non-prefab landmark architecture? Whether there is or is not, what are the roots of this particular style?

Were brothels and prostitution as ubiquitous in the American West as is portrayed in film and fiction?

I mean in movies and in fiction pretty much any town always has a brothel or a cathouse, and invariably one of the characters is a prostitute or madame. I’m wondering how close to reality this was. Thanks.
