The Rhodesian Bush War is heavily romanticised by certain groups. Was this true at the time?

It seems that everything from the aesthetics to the principles behind this war is a common point of consensus between certain groups, particularly amongst those who really enjoy touting their racial superiority. From spouting rhetoric about "slotting floppies" to an almost unhealthy obsession with the FAL rifle and khaki shorts, I have to wonder if this is a recent thing or something that existed at the time. Listening to these people talk about it, it seems they would have loved a chance to travel to Rhodesia and participate in the wars-- was that something that actually happened? How was it covered elsewhere in the world, in the media?

What caused such large Anglo-Celtic migration to Southern South America (Argentina, Chile and Uruguay) if it was never a British colony and was ruled by Spaniards?

Argentina, Chile and Uruguay have huge Anglo-Celtic populations, with Chile having 800,000 Anglo-Celts, Argentina having 800,000-1,300,000 Anglo-Celts and Uruguay having 120,000 Irish-Uruguayans (Unsure about the amount of British-Uruguayans).

To my understanding, they have influenced the region quite a but, introducing British sports, founding hospitals and schools, and running most of the railways in the area. Less influential than say the Spaniards or Italians, but still very influential.

I have heard lots of English-Argentine live in Buenos Aires, and also Welsh speaking settlements are in Chubut, with lots of other Anglo-Celtic communities (Including Irish, Scottish and other Welsh and English in the rest of Argentina and neighbouring countries such as Chile and Uruguay).

What caused English, Irish, Scottish, and Welsh people to migrate to Argentina, Chile and Uruguay in the first place though?

Was there a theory about Jesus being hungarian ?

I read today in an Ernst Nolte book (Les mouvements fascistes nationaux or Die faschistischen Bewegungen, couldn't find the english title) that "after 1925" some far rights groups were developing the "turanian genealogical theory" (théorie généalogique touranienne) that included Jesus being hungarian and wanted the next hungarian king to be a son of the emperor of Japan.

That seems pretty weird, but a few searches on google yields nothing. Does anyone have some insight about it ?

How did ancient cities like Rome not consume all available nearby trees for fuel?

I would think that a large city would cut down trees for fuel faster than they naturally grow, and I can’t imagine it would take that many years to cut down all trees within a reasonable transportation distance. How did Rome, and other large ancient cities, avoid that problem?

Were people before the 18th century as insanely religious as history makes us think?

I've been playing a lot of CK2 and EU4 the past couple months and religion is a HUGE part of the games. Almost every time you bring up history the first thing that comes to mind is religion. From Ancient Egypt, India, China, and Greece, to the founding of Christianity and the Protestant wars, also let's not forget the Crusades, religion is always the main factor of politics and the daily lives of the people of all classes. I was wondering if religion was really always on peoples mind or if history just talks about it more kind of like with wars, all of history wasn't wars, but war is what's put in the books, is it the same with religion?

How old is the Ragnarök? Is it possible to have an estimate year of its origin?

Hi! I was talking about Norse mythology with a friend and she asked me if I knew how old is the Ragnarök (estimated of course since having precise dates for these stuff is tricky I think). I'm not well versed in Norse mythology but I went on Googling to see if I could get some information about the origins and specially how old is Ragnarök but I couldn't find any precise information only that it is pre Christian.

Is there any historian in this subreddit who can give me some information about this? If there isn't such information, what is the oldest evidence of the myth in Nordic history?

How was the proclamation of Thanksgiving as a National Holiday received by the people, especially it’s strong Christian tone and Sovereignty of God over the Nation?

The text of the proclamation of Thanksgiving as a National Holiday

Washington, D.C. October 3, 1863

By the President of the United States of America.

A Proclamation.

The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God.

In the midst of a civil war of unequalled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle or the ship; the axe has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom.

No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People.

I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens.

And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.

In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States to be affixed.

Done at the City of Washington, this Third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the Independence of the United States the Eighty-eighth.

By the President: Abraham Lincoln

William H. Seward, Secretary of State

Back in the 19th century, did most people understand the existence of a female orgasm? Would the partners of 19th century women know how to accomplish such? Was cunnilingus taboo? (Interested in a Victorian perspective, but any info is appreciated!)

I am reading books about the Victorian era and Queen Victoria and thought about this. I know about female hysteria so I understand there was some sort of awareness of the female orgasm. Serious answers please! Not asking for anything NSFW.
