Economics journals in the vast majority of countries prove common economic theories like supply and demand and comparative advantage. If economists in the USSR tried to do objective research into economics, they would discover that central planning was inefficient. However, if they published those results, they would be fired. Did they "prove" that central planning worked, and if so, how?

Hello, good morning. Today, when people say jobs, they imagine you working at a place doing something to make money to pay whatever you enjoy doing or etc. But pre-industrial revolution or even more back in time. How did people have jobs? or what consisted of work that gave you money?

My grandmother died a few years ago, but I've only just started seriously going through all of her photographs. I found these two pictures of her father, my great-grandfather. On the back, she wrote that he was around 17 years old in these pictures, during World War 2.
He remarried when she was fairly young. After that, she was pretty much ousted from the family by her stepmother, so we're not in contact with them. I'm trying to see what I can find out about him without having to contact her family. This photo seemed like a good place to start.
Judging by the uniform, it looks like he was stationed somewhere cold, maybe Russia or Scandinavia? I looked up images of German World War 2 uniforms from these regions, but I didn't see any that had the same double-breasted coat that he is wearing here. Maybe that's a minor detail, but I'm not sure.
Thank you for the help! Let me know if this doesn't belong in this subreddit...I don't believe it's violating any rules.

Maintaining a balance of free and slave states was imperative to keeping a balance of power in the Senate. Northerners had a majority in the House, but they could never pass anti-slavery legislation without control of the Senate, which Southerners fought to avoid.
My question: Were Southerners ever afraid that a Northern vice-president might break a tie, as he would be president of the Senate? If they weren't afraid of this, why not? Lastly, if this was a potential threat to the balance of power among free and slave states in the Senate, why do history textbooks (the ones I've read, anyway) never mention this as a point of contention?

Greetings all,
I am looking into researching the Irish military diaspora. This is the phenomenon of Irish nationals or people of Irish extraction serving in the militaries of various other nations, A big example of this for Americans would be the Irish units in the American Civil War.
However, I am unable to find many sources on the matter. Thus, I have elected to ask you all for guidance. Any advice will be much appreciated.

Was wondering if any of you can recommend a hardcover book that would better explain the Federalist Papers. I have the Federalist Papers themselves, but would like to get something that would "translate" it as well.

I recall reading about a group of soldiers that were to be deployed in some jungles around ww2 or Vietnam. They were known for their fearlessness but prior to the jump they didn't know they'd be using parachutes. They had just asked for the pilot to be flying low when they jumped out.
Who was this group of soldiers? Sikhs? Polynesian fighters?

I'm looking for sources that discuss how it changed England, from 1534 to when Mary made it go away and when it came back with Elizabeth.

Hello,
I hope my question is worded correctly for you to understand what I am asking.
So why is Adolf Hitler the go to comparison for bad people? We often hear the, 'as bad as Hitler', or 'worse than Hitler' uttered when we talk of bad people. In fact the Uk house of parilment seem to mention him an awful lot... Yet, now at least, he not 'living memory' for most. (Yeah ,there are some WW2 veterans still around, but as each year passes there are less and less.)
I ask as, from what little I know, there have been many more recent dictators, some still alive and kicking. Or killing as the case maybe.
(I can't name the current ones, as it breaks the 20yr rule.) For example, Joesph Stalin, Pol Pot , Idi Amin Dada , Jorge Rafael Videla, Enver Pasha to name a few.
Is it just due to the scale/amount of people killed? Or is it a social thing,e.g. Adolf Hitler is a much easier a name to remember than say, Mao Zedong?
Thank you for your time.

I would imagine it has something to do with the end of the ice age. I've seen it said developed about 12000 years ago in the fertile crescant and spread from there. But I also read that it probably developed in many places around the world around 12000 years ago for reasons other than the ice age ending. Perhaps someone with more knowledge on this can clear things up a bit.

I know Jesus is ethnically Jewish and I was curious to learn about how Hitler and his subordinates were able to sway religious SS members and others to carry out his "Final Solution"?

I'm wondering for my school project, how often did defenders win battles? More ratios and numbers, not specific battles. I'm mainly asking for the Early Middle Ages, around 500-100 C.E.
If you could link me to any studies or know, that would be really helpful.

I once read something along the lines that you were supposed to mumble as you read along in Ancient Greece. Is it true? How has the practice of reading a book changed over the centuries?

I am currently wondering how a feudal army formed mostly of peasant levy’s would be able to be organised and used tactically in a battle. Were units formed and who would be given the in charge of them?
Did the peasants have any formal military training and how capable would they be in understanding tactics effectively? (Such as to form a shieldwall or to form a schiltron)

I didn't want to use the word photorealistic as that is a relatively new piece of technology but I am having a hard time understanding how artists during the Renaissance or other periods of artistic advancement were unable or unwilling to paint and draw in methods that were so realistic looking that it looked like real life. Nowadays I feel like I see many artists who are able to make real life pieces of art with minimal tools.

Disease brought by Europeans killed large portions of the Native American population during the early modern period. Were natives of Sub-Saharan Africa affected in a similar way during the colonization of Africa?

hey sorry I’m a high school student and am confused. Hard to find answers on google. I am writing a paper in Chicago style, Confused about footnotes. When you use, let’s say, the same website for an entire paragraph, do I have to footnote every line? Or just the last sentence in the paragraph on the same source. Also if u write a paragraph with a website, and then talk about a book, then back to the website, you would have to do 3 footnotes right? Thanks in advance

To most people in the US, FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) is a a disaster response agency under the Department of Homeland Security founded by executive decision in 1979 by then president Jimmy Carter. However in counter culture and in alternative media that is distrustful of the US government, FEMA is potentially a nefarious agency that at the drop of a hat, ready to round up US citizens into concentration Camps. Other conspiracy theories point to FEMA being a tool to help establish a new world order.
These conspiracies in recent decades have picked up steam or noteriety with the ubiquity of the internet and entertainment art referencing these FEMA camps (the critically acclaimed and best selling video game series, Deus Ex being a good example).
However from a cursory glance, since its inception, FEMA has been a lightning rod for conspiracies that allude to odious goals and methods. Is there a specific origin point of these conspiracy theories with regards to FEMA and why does FEMA throughout the decades since its inception continue to be a be a point of alternative theories. Also are there any other examples in US history where certain parts of the US government were focuses of conspiracy theories?
