I am writing a paper on the book, and i would like to focus on how the book depicts Soumaoro Kanté as a great sorcerer. I have to discuss how much it exaggerates vs how much is true. Having a little trouble finding articles, any suggestions?

At any point did states or even counties or towns purchase slaves for their own use? For instance, these days you have public works departments that belong to towns or counties that maintain roads, parks, and various other things that need upkeep. Did towns and cities as entities purchase slaves for this use?

I was wondering this, would they be classed as POW's if they surrendered just like soldiers or would they be part of a different group?

I know ninjas were against the samurai and also that imperial japan was too. For some reason i have a belief that Ninjas are more likable, then imperial Japan. So what are the differences between Ninjas and imperial japan?

Here's an image of the badges.
I know he was a pilot of some sort and was stationed at an airbase in southern California, if it helps. I've been able to find what a couple of these are called, but I don't really know what they are awarded for. Thank you to anyone who can help me!

I'm reading Patrick O'Brians novels and I haven't figured out how post from Captain Aubrey's wife, for example, is forwarded to a specific port where the Captain finds himself.
Considering, in the novel The Surgeon's Mate, Aubrey escaped from Boston and landed in Halifax, why would he expect a whole backlog of posts to find him there as soon as he arrived?
I would think that it would harm the war effort if the post was going to be aware of where and when each ship would be landing and, being at war and also subject to the whimsical nature of weather, how reliable would it be to expect to see any ship land at Port at anything close to a set date?
I'd also be interested to know how banking worked during those times where one could go to a "local" branch and withdraw money and how those transactions crisscrossed great distances. Since post could be lost at sea what backup plans did they have to ensure withdrawals and deposits were correctly recorded?

I've read in numerous sources that apparently the IJN "Shotai" formation was more effective then the traditional V formation which it replaced.
Is this an accurate statement? How was the Shotai formation actually unique? Did it have any particular attributes that would have made it superior to other contemporary aerial formations?
Finally, was the Shotai formation primarily employed by Naval Aviation, or was it also used by Land Based Aviation?

While this might seem like a weird question, it has been on my mind for quite a while now. When looking at old drawings of the mongol horsemen, they all appear to be wearing some sort of tunic or other dress-like apparel. Wouldn't this hurt the finer parts of the rider? How does this compare to other horse-based civilizations? Is it common to not wear pants while riding a horse? Did the turks wear pants? The huns? Well, thanks in advance, to anyone answering my weird question.

The king summoned the short parliament so that he could garner more money to pay soldiers to quell the rebellion in Scotland. Why couldn't he just raise taxes directly without parliament?

As the question states, how were so many bodies recovered and disposed of, and are military or civilian remains still found today or in recent years?

In 2014, 6.6% of Spaniards were named García. In this map it's the most common name as far south as Andalusia. But English Wikipedia [claims](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garc%C3%ADa_(surname)) it's Basque in origin. Is that true? If so, does it represent a large Basque-descended population outside the Basque Country? If not, where does this name come from?

It feels like one of those explanations that seems nice after the fact, but in reality is mostly unrelated.

I mean, for me it just sounds like the kamikaze pilots, they must have known they would never make it out of it alive again.
And to add to my question, these pics im talking about are often american soldiers in these towns dodging german snipers, so was the tactic by the german army to abandon a town and then just leave some snipers in them that known that they will never make it back to their army again if they stay there? Or was these cases where german sniper was captured alive?
Sorry for weird and long question, i am just curious about this cause i would never have accepted this if i was a sniper, it must have been a death sentence?
Last, was this ''tactic'' used in eastern front also by retreating german army?
