Did other countries at the time help in any way? Did they view the south as slave owners who were in the wrong or did were some countries supporting the confederate states? Do countries today learn about the American Civil War?
Thanks in advance!

My family and I were talking, and the subject of Vlad the Impaler came up. I explained how he got the name, detailing death by impalement on a steak. We discovered his last name was Dracula. Then my fiancé suggested that could be Stoker's inspiration behind stabbing a vampire through the heart with a wooden steak to kill it. I thought this was probably accurate. But we couldn't figure out, why garlic? I'm wondering if anyone knows of a historical connection between Vlad, Vampires, and Garlic.

I know that 'living off the land' or 'foraging' are just generally euphemisms for stealing food from local farmers, but I'm wondering how organized the process was.
Did they just let all the men loose and tell them to figure it out themselves? Did they organize it so every squad went to a different farmhouse? Or were there there dedicated troops for this, and the majority of men on the march were expected to stay with the main body?
And how large an army could realistically support themselves this way?

Can anyone tell who is the man on the left in this image with Eisenhower? If not who, then maybe some information on rank, uniform, etc.
Edit: Could it be Paul J. Mueller?

My stepmom got a bunch of WW2 medals and patches from a freind after her husband passed away. All we know was that he flew either a torpedo plane or dive bomber. Here is a link to some of the stuff we have.

So I was recently reading up on the Haitian Revolution after watching a Crash Course video on it. Much of the brutality (on both sides) is very sad, but I'm somewhat confused. Why did the Haitian government spare white women when they were much more harsh with white men and male children? Was it because they were less involved in the slave trade? I suspect this but have no evidence.
In summation, why weren't white women endangered by the Haitian Revolt in the same way white men were?

To what extent were mid to low ranking members of the Wehrmacht associated with Nazi Ideals, in comparison to the extent at which the Schutzstaffel (SS) was associated with those same ideals?
I was reading this thread:
https://www.reddit.com/r/ShitWehraboosSay/comments/79mrz5/any_of_you_ever_think_a_lot_of_the_clean/
and I thought about how many people agree with the idea of a "clean Wehrmacht." I had a professor whose dad served in the Wehrmacht, and she had also said that he and the people he served with were a separate entity than the Nazis (even though she somewhat acknowledged that they served the Nazi cause).
So, what is the official take on this question by historians? To me it seems like the Wehrmacht were just "following orders," but I could be completely wrong. The idea that the allies "implanted" the idea of a clean Wehrmacht seems to be teetering on the edge of conspiracy theory-ish, so I am a bit hesitant to agree with that statement.

For instance, in the Palace of Holyroodhouse, their display on Mary, Queen of Scots, had some pieces of artwork (commissioned by Lord Darnley, I think; they didn't allow photography, so I may be misremembering some of the details). The display said that the artwork was laden with symbolism that would have been immediately apparent to anyone of the time.
It even claimed that the meaning behind the depiction would not have been particularly debatable or open to misinterpretation at the time, seeming to imply that the imagery could be read almost as effectively as we might read a paragraph today.
Was there this sort of universal visual language that was employed back then, in a way that has fallen into disuse in the face of ubiquitous literacy?

GAME OF THRONES SEASON ONE SPOILER
I'm referencing Bran being unconcious after being pushed put of the window. He is unconscious for a month. How was he kept fed and how was his health monitored? How did the maester (he's a like doctor for non-GoT fans) diagnose whether he would live or die?
I know this is a fake universe, but GRRM is a historian too. A lot of the story is based off of actual events.
so is there any truth to these methods of keeping people comatose in those times?

Without trying to politicize this post, it's pretty well known most countries with a significant Kurdish population (Turkey, Iraq, etc.) seem to harbor some serious ill feelings toward them. What have they done or what events in history have lead to this point?
Also I apologize if this is directed at too recent and modern of a topic for this sub, but I don't know where else to go and this sub is known for it's incredibly in-depth and insightful answers, and I'm wondering if there's some historical events that have lead to this current general sentiment in the region.

Why did the French feel justified in asking for a bribe to open negotiations with the US? Was it simply spite for American neutrality or was this a common practice in Europe? Why did the French officials have their names redacted? Who decided to do this?

Something I have been wondering recently with the approaching rolling back of the clocks, when did people care more about what the exact time was over just general Dawn, Noon, Dusk, Night? Was it a wide spread adoption? Or if I was a small time rancher or settler on the frontier would I pay little attention to the exact time and worry more about general sun positions?

What happened to the roman culture after the fall of the West? It feels a lot like it just disappeared as the Germanic culture took over all of Europe. Did it disappear or did the Barbarians conquer Rome, but were culturally dominated by it?

My mother recently asked me to help her learn more about history. She knows very little about history and would like to learn more.
I don't have any idea where to start, and I don't think suggesting she read a textbook would be a good idea. Should I go chronologically and in depth? Start with a general overview and then go in depth? Just stick to the last couple of centuries?
Any ideas of what to do Historians?

Does the Japanese claim that they were fighting a defensive war in the Pacific hold any water? I've heard that in Japan the educational and political systems are now trying to assert this claim under the guidance of Abe.

Basically I am curious when military technology in Europe had recovered/advanced to a state where it would actually be better than the armour and weapons from the Late Roman Empire.
