At least in the US and UK, the Indian diaspora does seem to be disproportionally Gujurati and Punjabi. Curious as to why.

Both of those religions were pretty enormous at one point - why did no "substitute" for pigs ever get into the short list for livestock? It just seems like with so many people refusing to eat pork, ranchers would've just started raising some other animal instead - if for no other reason, it would be more efficient. You can raise 3 animals that everyone eats, or 2 animals everyone can eat and 1 animal only a few people eat.

How do I decide, if what any given part of a text was "meant" to be propaganda, or if any misinformation found is merely a result of incomplete knowledge on the authors part?
The specific example I had in mind is a commemorative book written by a German general around 1900, dealing with the Franco Prussian war. I don't believe that it is free of propaganda, but since it deals with the course of the war, there are some parts that are accurate, as far as I can tell.
But, since a German general (probably) won't have access to French archives, there have to be some things that are the result of assumption, while others are the result of a little bit of fudging to make the vets look better.
So, how do I best separate the two? Should I just write off the whole book as trash?
(If it helps, I am trying to find out some things about how "dramatized" the war was in it's somewhat immediate aftermath. The war clearly had an important part in Germany back then (seen in the Sedantag))
(I hope all that makes sense)

Hello!
I'm a first-year Masters student studying medieval Scandinavia. I'm looking to focus on Norse diaspora colonies in the North Atlantic, but my University (though conveniently located) has only one dedicated medievalist and their specialty is in Italy/Papal History.
I'm looking for some good, scholarly histories of Ireland and the Celtic people in general that I can use to shore up my background knowledge of this particular people. Any recommendations of books and/or authors would be greatly appreciated as they would save me a profound amount of time trying to separate the good from the spuriously sourced. Thanks, as always!

I have heard about a dozen versions of the following joke, with nationalities swapped around, normally with A being played by Americans/Brits and B by a cheeky small nation. Goes something like this:
A: Please divert course 15 degrees south to avoid collision
B: Please divert course 15 degrees north to avoid collision repeated several times resulting in
A: We are the Big Ship aircraft carrier group, capable of bombing nations into the stone age, fully loaded and willing to fight, YOU DIVERT COURSE
B: We are lighthouse, your call.
My question, is the joke based in any true events or is it pure fabrication?

One thing that's always sort of confused me as vaguely propoganda when it occasionally comes up is that states that fought for their independence and had military-enforced sovereignty for several years are still counted as having uninterrupted US American statehood from the late 1700s onward despite the aforementioned time period. I understand that the constitution lacks a "leaving the union clause" but Big Gun Diplomacy effectively trumps a lack of specific clauses.
Is this a ~100% accepted concept or is there not any argument had over counting, say, South Carolina as being 225 years in the union rather than 229?

Hello,
Is it true that women died while giving birth in the middle age? My instructor said this is not true. The women did not die, just the children sometimes. But in my opinion it is true. Unfortunately, I didn't find any scientific sources to confirm or deny this thesis.
Thanks for any help.

E.g. when Churchill, FDR, and Stalin met in Tehran. How did they protect them in transport?

What was the Cumann na mBan? I hear that they were a feminist group and tried to take over Ireland. Some people(mainly anti-feminists) say that they murdered people. Although they did use Wikipedia for this.
What is your opinion on this?

I was wondering how best to learn some of the in-depth history of the earliest Sumerian settlements. Particularly around 2600-2500 BCE when the Instructions of Shuruppak were written. I'm mainly looking for information on the mundane, day to day life, housing, clothing, cultural norms. That sort of thing.
Obviously there's a lot of websites and books out there relating to this period, but I am finding it difficult to filter out all the ancient aliens nonsense. Any pointers for the best books or online resources?
