How much of the rise and fall of the Roman Empire and later the Dark Ages be attributable to climate change?

Many locations and streets in London reference vineyards and wine growing, which is not feasible today. Summer is basically military campaign season. Could the expansion of the Roman Empire into Britain been helped by that warming period? There are many references to unusual weather patterns throughout history, but not a lot about how societies coped/took advantage of them.

What's the background behind this very NSFW propaganda print from around the time Japan won the Russo-Japanese War? Who would have produced it or consumed it? I take it falls under the category of "Shunga". Was it "mainstream" or "pornographic" or both/neither?

I don't read Japanese but apparently the text is supposed to be somewhat humorous? What were Japanese attitudes toward the apparent rape of an enemy soldier in wartime?

Did the later Republican and Imperial Romans feel they had a right or destiny to conquer, like Manifest Destiny for the Mediterranean, or did the conquests kind of just... happen a bunch of times?

...because it was expedient from a military or political standpoint, for example.

Did the U.S. have interest in Oil in WWI?

In regards of the potential dismantlement of the Ottoman Empire?

Was oil even of importance at the time? This point was raised by a teacher of mine recently and I didn't think of it before. I tried to look it up, but I came short of gratifying answers.

Civil War battles

During the United States civil war, did we actually fight the way I was taught in school? Both sides of the battle lining up shoulder to shoulder with muskets and just trading shots until the other side submits or is killed off. If that is actually how it went down, what was the reasoning behind it?

Were there any prominent Christian secular musicians in Western Europe during the 9th or 10th centuries? Is there a Christian counterpoint for someone like Ziryab?

Sorry if my question is a bit messy. I'm currently writing a paper comparing discussions of music in Arab and Christian Iberian chronicles. While my paper focuses mostly on the Reconquista era (and how the Arabs influenced European musical thought during the Reconquista/Crusade era- drawing heavily on al-Farabi), my research has led me to need to discuss at some length the musician Ziryab, probably the most prominent musician in al-Andalus, if not the Arab world in the 9th century. While plenty has been written on Ziryab (thanks to people such as al-Makkari), I've yet to find an equivalent counterpoint to discuss Christian musical culture in Iberia/France... does such a person exist?

Where can I read the autobiography of Hattusil the third?

I have a book called "The secret of the Hittites" by C. W. Ceram, and in chapter 3.9, page 186, the author describes how Hattusil the 3rd overthrown his nephew when he tried to strip him of the titles his brother, the previous king, had given him.

He then mentions that Hattusil actually wrote a document that could be considered an autobiography, in which he explains why he had to overthrow his nephew and even apologizes for that, while showing that he saw the Hittite nation as more than just a kingdom to rule but a nation to serve.

So naturally I want to read it but try as I might I can't find it in a language I can read for free.

I figure it probably is a broken mess with a bunch of missing parts, but I read Gilgamesh so I can deal with that, I figure if it's translated it's also probably in german, but I can deal with that too.

Thanks

Chicago style citation for censuses and death certificates?

I'm writing a family history and would like to use Chicago style for my endnote citations. My problem is that I don't have a guide for how to properly cite common genealogy records such as censuses, church baptism logs, and death certificates. The Chicago Manual doesn't have any examples.

I've looked at a book called Evidence Explained by Elizabeth Shown Mills but didn't care for her somewhat confusingly ordered citation style. I'd like to stick close to Chicago style as possible since I'm already using that for newspaper articles and books. Any suggestions for how my citations for censuses and death certificates, etc should look?

IAMA Lecturer in Modern History researching the contribution of female pioneers in politics and early female MPs in the UK

My present research examines the contribution of female pioneers in politics and early female MPs. I'm currently working with Parliament on the Vote100 Project, BBC Radio 4 and the Smithsonian, and in 2019 I'll manage the Astor100 project celebrating the centenary of women sitting in the House of Commons.

I am no longer online because at 8pm BST (3pm EDT, 12pm PDT) I'll be giving a public lecture, titled Suffrage and Citizenship, at the University of Reading where I work. You can watch live online through the University's Facebook page, and get in touch with me on Twitter. I will also look again over the next few days. Many thanks for your questions.

AMA about the campaign for equal citizenship, the parliamentary politics, the campaigns for and against, the issues of class, marriage, and militancy around the suffrage movement.

Why was black so ubiquitous in 16th century attire?

From looking at a large number of paintings from this era, it seems black had become an extremely fashionable color for clothing especially for middle-class men, was there some special meaning ascribed to the color at this time that made it so popular?

What did leisure wear look like for men in England in the 1800s?

There are a lot of pictures, both photos and drawings of the formal wear of the time. But what would a man of the middle/upper classes wear around the house in the 1800s? Was there even such a thing as leisure wear, or did people generally wear the same clothes throughout the day?

EDIT: The choice of asking for England was largely arbitrary, if you have any information in the US or in the rest of Europe then go ahead and talk about that!

Bonus: What is this kind of shirt called that Tom Hardy's character is wearing in Taboo? http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2016/05/10/14/33E5F37400000578-3577294-Relaxed_Tom_Hardy_certainly_looked_comfortable_in_character_on_t-a-2_1462887940056.jpg

Short Answers to Simple Questions | October 11, 2017

Previous weeks!

Some questions people have just don't require depth. This thread is a recurring feature intended to provide a space for those simple, straight forward questions that are otherwise unsuited for the format of the subreddit.

Here are the ground rules:

  • Top Level Posts should be questions in their own right.

  • Questions should be clear and specific in the information that they are asking for.

  • Questions which ask about broader concepts may be removed at the discretion of the Mod Team and redirected to post as a standalone question.

  • We realize that in some cases, users may pose questions that they don't realize are more complicated than they think. In these cases, we will suggest reposting as a stand-alone question.

  • Answers MUST be properly sourced to respectable literature. Unlike regular questions in the sub where sources are only required upon request, the lack of a source will result in removal of the answer.

  • Academic secondary sources are prefered. Tertiary sources are acceptable if they are of academic rigor (such as a book from the 'Oxford Companion' series, or a reference work from an academic press).

  • The only rule being relaxed here is with regard to depth, insofar as the anticipated questions are ones which do not require it. All other rules of the subreddit are in force.

Why are Conservatives also called Tories?

I understand from various sources here and there that it was derived from an Irish word meaning highwayman or robber. If so, why is it still used self-referentially despite the derogatory connotations?
