How accurate is the stereotypical depiction of a pirate?

It's my understanding that the modern character we identify as a "pirate" is largely influenced by disney versions of pirates in their films over the last 100 years. How accurate are these depictions, how did they vary, and if they are not accurate where did Disney get them from?

The fall of the Roman Empire

What was the major cause for its downfall? Was it the adoption of Christianity, the incompetence of the later emperors it the lack of the disciplined and competent army during their last days or the sheer pressure of handling a territory so vast?

How did field cables look during WW2?

So, radios were obviously pretty important during WW2, but from what I can tell cable based telephony was still pretty common.

But one thing I have never seen are accounts of how the cables looked.

How thick were they? Were multiple pairs of wire paired in a bigger cable? What about isolation? Was there a similar-ish standard between nations?

(Similar as in calibres. Yeah, they weren't really similar but everyone had a rifle around 7mm, or some artillery somewhere around 75mm)

Edit: Mangled the title a bit - should have been What did field cables look like, sorry!, sorry!

It's somewhere between 150-200AD, I'm a fighting-aged man with a young family in northern Germania. Life here sucks and those Goths up North are looking a bit scary, so I don't really fancy sticking around. Can I emigrate peacefully into Roman territory, even if my king wants to fight them?

Is there any explanation for the absurdly long reigns on the Sumerian king list?

When they say someone ruled for 800 years, what did they think they were talking about? What was their justification for thinking someone could live that long? Were there just 20 monarchs in a row who used the same name? Is it a hyperbole created by the fact that monarchs would have been healthier and lived longer? Were they merely filling in the gaps for periods where they didn't know who the ruler was?

MEGATHREAD: Hurricanes, and other Destructive Weather, in History

Hello everyone!

With the recent tragedy caused by Hurricane Harvey, and now followed by Hurricane Irma that is still progressing, we've seen a major uptick in questions about destructive weather phenomenon. In situations where we see an unusual amount of activity on a narrow topic, we like to create these Megathreads in order to help keep things centralized. It helps prevent a bunch of similar questions dominating, and also helps users more easily find answers to the questions they might have! A few quick things to keep in mind about how these MEGATHREADS work:

To kick things off though, here are a few previous questions which have already been asked and answered, so make sure to check here before asking your own. None of these answers are the final, definitive response so please don't let them deter you from asking for more elucidation though, of course.. If you know of any I missed (damn that shitty reddit search!), please let me know so I can edit into the OP here:

Why Aren't Warships Painted Black or Otherwise Camouflaged?

I'm thinking both in terms of the hulls and sails of sailing ships hiding from other ships at night as well as modern warships running EMCON trying to avoid detection - does the standard gray color scheme work better to conceal ships than a black or patterned scheme would?

Did routing men on the eventually winning side rally, did they rejoin later or did they never come back at all?

I was reading quite a few posts on how routed men would seek out safe places and once calmed down, reform. But how did this work for an army that was victorious (if it happened at all), did they return to the camp, did they rally, did they flee, etc.?

How many of the crusaders would have actually worn the iconic red cross?

Crusaders are typically depicted in popular art as being dressed in white and bearing a red cross. I know that Crusaders serving different lords and factions would wear different clothing, such as the black cloaks with white St John's crosses worn by the Hospitallers. But how common was it for Crusaders to actually wear the white cloaks with a red cross? In the third crusade, for example, I doubt Richard I would have equipped his entire English army in white and red for the campaign, especially considering a lot of them were likely just peasant levies who could barely afford the equipment. Surely most of his army would just be wearing their normal equipment?

Looking for books on Freemasons?

Apologies if this is the wrong subreddit to ask.

One of my colleagues is a Freemason, I'm interested in reading about the history and modern practice of Freemasonry. I've found two books on Amazon, but both have fake reviews so I'm slightly skeptical.

Are there any decent books on Freemasonry please, or shall I take my chances on Wikipedia?

Thanks for any recommendations.

Questions about the history of the English language!

Hi /r/AskHistorians!

I'm trying to find the answer to this question: When did the Roman influence on the English language stop, where and why?

Was it because of the Fall of the Roman Empire and Anglo-Saxons taking over in the 5th century? I'm not sure where though? Was it a specific event that led to end of the Roman influence?

I'm also interested in knowing which three languages are known as the "base" of the English we know today?. Is it really French, Latin and Old Norse? I've been comparing sources where most only state Latin being the influence while other state languages like Greek and Spanish. I know that English has been influenced by lots of different languages but are there other languages other than Latin that has formed the English language?

EDIT: Did Pope Adrian IV have something to do with the end of the Roman influence? My English teacher (yes I need this info for my English class) hinted that someone named Adrian/Hadrianus could have something to do with it. Could he mean the Norman invasion of Ireland?

How did southern Native NA Americans (Seminole, Cree, Choctaw, Cherokee, etc.) deal with hurricanes?

I imagine that a hurricane is less destructive if you have less infrastructure for it to destroy. However, did these people have other means of protecting themselves? Was there an annual migration away from the coast? Was there subterranean shelters (obviously not in Florida but elsewhere)?
