I tried searching in the sub to no avail. Myself and my friends can't decide on whether it was economic oppression from the North or slavery.

What was the average American’s opinion on Islam between 1945 and the 1970’s?

Without entering current events or political soapboxing, what was the average American’s opinion on Islam between 1945 and the 1970’s, and how much did they actually know about the religion’s beliefs and history?

Also, as a followup question: how much would this opinion change based upon the education, race, or political affiliation of an American?

BTW: This is a repost of a question I asked that didn't receive an answer.

NSFW (18+) I've noticed a great deal of depictions of Aristotle and Phyllis in a kind of D/s pose, that all seem to be from the time of the Northern Renaissance, was female dominance/male submission a known thing in the sexual practices of Europe at this time?

Did people of the 15th and 16th centuries know of and practice bdsm?

Was Bhutan a princely state in British India?

I ask because of this line in the Wikipedia article for The Indian States Reorganisation Act:

The British dissolved their treaty relations with more than five hundred princely states, who were encouraged to accede to either India or Pakistan, while under no compulsion to do so. Most of the states acceded to India, and a few to Pakistan. Bhutan, Hyderabad and Kashmir opted for independence, although the armed intervention of India conquered Hyderabad and brought it into the Indian Union.

I've read up a lot about Bhutan over the years but this doesn't seem right. It was to my understanding that Bhutan was a completely separate entity from the British Raj, and Bhutan was at most a separate protectorate of the British.

Did the RAF stand a chance against the Luftwaffe during the Battle of Britain?

Many people have different views on this subject and I am interested in getting a more "factual" answer. A lot of people believe that the Luftwaffe could have easily destroyed the RAF but it was because of the mistakes of the German high command that prevented this. Others say that even from the start the RAF still proved to be a fierce opponent and did indeed stand a chance against the Luftwaffe?

Southeast Asia is one of the parts of world history I know little about. What were armies like? Were they mostly peasant levies or professional troops? How were they armed? How prevalent were elephants and gunpowder, and how were they used? What about naval warfare?

Girlfriends Grandparent's have negatives of Mussolini's death and post mortem body. How valuable are pictures like these to historians?

My girlfriend came back from visiting her grandparents and according to her they own a set of negatives that were taken by a family friend for intelligence purposes who later passed them to her great grandfather for keeping. I doubt the family would ever want to donate them or sell them to a museum at a low price due to their lower socioeconomic background.

What type of value do pictures like these have today to historians?

How well was FDR's paralysis hidden from the general public?

I know that the press made an agreement with the FDR administration to not really take pictures of him in a wheelchair. I also know that at the 1933 inauguration he used braces and his son's help to make it look like he was walking.

My question is to what extent did this work? Did the general public really believe the president could walk or was his paralysis a but of an open secret? If it was the former when did it become common knowledge?

What theories or myths did humans create to explain a solar eclipse before we figured it out?

It must have been a terrifying event to watch the sun darken without any reasonable explanation. I'm wondering if there are any interesting recorded theories, myths, or stories attempting to explain this phenomenon.

What were Robert E Lee's personal view in regards to Slavery?

My former high school is debating taking Robert Lee's name out of its name. As a civil war buff Ive read numerous books over my life which almost universally said that Lee wasnt necessarily a racist or huge fan of slavery, rather he was first and foremost a Virginian and supported the Confederacy on those grounds. Living in an ultra-liberal county the new dialogue that is coming forth is that he is a racist, a symbol of racism, and all the bad and trendy things that go along with it. I'm cool with that if its historically and factually sound - that being said it is not consistent with what Ive come to know for the majority of my adult life.

How did Lost Cause theorists justify patriotism for the United States?

As I understand Lost Cause theory, the claim was that the North was oppressing the South by not respecting states' rights, then the South rebelled justly but was destroyed by the North's industrial power, greater population, and Grant's brutal tactics. In their thinking, wouldn't that mean that Southerners should hate the United States (to the point of ongoing rebellion and resistance)? An oppressor doesn't become less oppressive because they won.

Was the claim something like, "After the losses of the Civil War showed the South wasn't going to just give in, the North learned to respect states' rights"?

I know that there have been posts on AskHistorians about when loyalty to the United States caught on again in the South (and I believe the answer was the Spanish-American War and WWI) but I thought this seeming contradiction between Lost Cause ideology and patriotism was worth asking.

How much truth is there to Arnold's statement that former Nazis "returned from the war filled with shrapnel and guilt, and spent the rest of their lives living in shame"?

Arnold Schwarzenegger made a video two days ago where he speaks out against Nazis and other white supremacists. He alludes to his childhood in Austria where he says he met former Nazis whom he saw as broken men living in shame.

Of course the veterans of every war have a certain burden that separates them from those who haven't seen what they saw. We know this about American veterans of WWII and Vietnam, for example.

But was there anything different on the whole about the veterans of WWII from the Nazi side, any increased burden of guilt that they carried due to the atrocities carried out by the regime, or just the awareness of being on the losing side? How were they perceived by the women and children that they came back to? What was it like living in a society where virtually every adult male would have had some hand in the events?
