I inherited a book owned by my great (x5) grandfather Pascal Randolph, can anyone tell me anything about it?

Here is the link to pictures of the book- http://imgur.com/a/FZEJ9

I don't know if anyone here can help me but recently I inherited this book. It has been in my family for awhile. Along with it I also received an original bible from 1853. All of them were owned by my great (x5) grandfather, Pascal Randoplh. Does anyone know anything about him or the book?

Bayonets & The Geneva convention?

Was once told by a history teacher that a certain type of bayonet was banned by the geneva convention, but there were certain countries in Asia who were not signatories of certain chapters and therefore continued to use these (triangluar?) bayonets.. Is there any truth in this?

Help me with a booklist?

Hello,

I am a history graduate student in my last semester and for once I'm taking a class for which I have no frame of reference. It's an independent study on the history of religion in the 19th century, and I'm only really taking it because I need to be taking a full courseload stay on as a teaching assistant. My wheelhouse generally focuses on 20th century political movements, revolutions, and conflicts. Given that, I'm a bit out of my depth.

My professor asked me to compile about 30 books together. I planned to work on it a bit earlier, but then I had to move, and became temporarily homeless. Does anybody have good recommendations?

Thanks.

Are there more pictures of the Royal Armouries Negroli Sallet? (Object 487)

So, my question is rather... specific. But I figured I should give it a try, since somebody on here might know of a book or old album online or, well, something.

Are there any more pictures, preferably from the front, back and above, of the Negroli Sallet held by the Royal Armouries in Leeds? The pictures they have uploaded on their website are not satisfying all the angles I need to accurately draw the sillhuette of it.

Do you know of any such pictures? (Also, yes, I have the regular internet pictures from the blue cabinet).

Thank you for your time!

Has there ever been a concept or event similar to the Purge occur in history?

The general idea: One night per year, the government sanctions a 12-hour period in which citizens can commit any crime they wish -- including murder -- without fear of punishment or imprisonment. The idea is that by releasing inner rage and such the populace will be more peaceful and civil.

How Realistic Are the Muskets on AMC's "Turn"?

I'm a History Major but mostly focused on WW1 and WW2 in Canada so this area is a bit outside of my area of expertise.

That said, the use of muskets on the AMC show "Turn" seems unbelievable. The shows set during the Revolutionary War, I believe, and shows the rifles being used to make shots I thought would be next to impossible based on what I understood about the accuracy of firearms during this time in history.

For example, one scene shows a woman shooting from outside on ground level shooting and hitting a man in a second storey window (she is about 30ft from the house).

Am I wrong on what I knew about the accuracy of these weapons? Or is this show just really inaccurate with their depiction.

Thanks in advance.

Can anyone tell me the main differences between 16th century naval warfare and 17th century naval warfare?

Specifically regarding the British navy, the tactics they used and how they differed over the centuries please. Other European nations will also be appreciated.

As a side question, could you then please compare these European nations naval tactics to an Asian countries naval tactics?

Why is Cao Cao depicted as an evil tyrant?

From what I've read on the guy he seems like a very rational guy that was just good at conquering. And although romance of three kingdoms is gray with reality and fiction meshing together,The novel portrays him as evil, but I was perfectly fine with him and actually supported most of his actions given his situations. And if not for him The Jin dynasty wouldn't have formed and stop the chaos. So why does most media villainize him and reduce him to a monster?

What did the Ancient Egyptians/copts call the Greeks and other groups around them?

I haven't been able find what they would have called the greeks before Alexander invaded. There was pre invasion contact so I imagine they would have had an exonym.

Also are there any examples of what they would have called Sudanese or Bedouin people?

If the Axis Powers in World War 2 so easily destroyed the air force of the French and English why didn't Hitler airdrop troops in mainland England?

Many movies and popular culture depict a defenseless England hunkering down against an onslaught of German Bombers. Why didn't the Germans just air drop troops in England if they had almost no air force to retaliate with?

What was the public reaction in Britain to impending handover of Hong Kong throughout the 1990's?

Going to try this one again as we approach the anniversary of the handover this week.

So, I hope this is not skirting the 20 year rule too much as we are a little over a week away from the 20th anniversary of the end of British rule in Hong Kong, however my question concerns the period between the Sino-British Joint Declaration in 1985 and the Union Jack being lowered in 1997. What were reactions in Britain to this loss of the last major overseas position? Was there consternation about the latest "end" of the British Empire? Celebration? Indifference?

Also, any media which handled the topic would be particularly of interest. Thanks!

Before and during ww2 why wasn't France prepared for an invasion through Belgium?

France in regard to Germany was in a similar strategic position at the onset of both ww1 and ww2: a heavily fortified German border with relativly light defenses on the Belgian border. Why wasn't France prepared for a German invasion through Belgium, even though it was essentially the exact same plan Germany used in ww1?

What did the "Soda man" use to give to people back in 1960, 70s and 80s?

My History teacher told my class that when he was young (He is now nearly 60) that he use to have a Milk Man deliver his milk, and a Bread man would come and give him bread every two days, these two seemed normal to me but the one that I thought was quite bizarre was when he mentioned a "Soda Man" or something like that, apparently he use to come by and give bottles of coke, cream soda, a type of drink that he said tasted like "cough medicine" and a bunch of others. Can someone tell me a bit about this and what type of sodas they use to give out?

Who invented the week, and why is it seven days? Days and years make sense as they are linked to natural events, and months less exactly so, but why did we come to think in terms of sets of seven days, or divide the month into four (and a bit)?
