What was the tactical mistake Albrecht Wallenstein made during the Battle of Lutzen? (30 years war)

After reading this post I saw that /u/Itsalrightwithme mentioned that Wallenstein made a tactical mistake during the battle. I am currently reading a book about the war and the battle of Luzten seemed to me like Wallenstein suffered heavy losses due to:

1). Being heavily outgunned.

2). Having less experience with the modernized tactics of that era, while Sweden was the first one to use it on massive scale.

3). Facing the Swedish army with Gustavus in command.

4). Pappenheim dying during the battle.

And even with all of that, Wallenstein managed to masterfully predict the Swedish attack block off his entire right wing from the Swedish army by burning a village, not to mention bait Sweden into even attacking in the first place.

So what did he do wrong?

What was the endgame for the Bay of Pig Landings?

Even if the landings had been successful in establishing a beachhead, it strikes me as ludicrous that the tiny group of ~1,500 men had any expectation of success. What were planners expecting to happen over the ensuing weeks? What were they hoping to play out?

When Xenophon refers to sacrificing 'victims' in his account of the Persian expedition is he talking about humans or animals?

Hi folks

Currently reading 'The Persian Expedition' and I have noted that Xenophon mentions sacrificing 'victims' on a number of occasions without making it clear what he is referring to. By comparison, he has mentioned sacrificing animals (mostly oxen?) specifically elsewhere in the text. Is he talking about sacrificing humans?

When did cowboys in the Wild West come to be viewed as white in the popular imagination?

I'll start off by saying that this may be my own perception more than anything else, but it seems like the popular image of cowboys in the American Wild West is predominantly white. This is despite the fact that there were many black and Mexican cowboys, some of them even fairly famous like Nat Love or Bill Pickett. Granted they were not the majority of cowboys, but they seem to be barely represented in cowboy or Wild West imagery.

When did this popular image arise? Did it come up during the time period? Was it maybe a result of the racism and segregation of the 1950s-1960s when movies set in the Wild West were very popular?

Repository of less famous classical music?

It is said that we only remember the best songs from the 1960s and 70s. There was actually a lot of crap then as there is today, we just don't bother to listen to it. I think this was true for classical music form the 18th and 17th centuries. We remember Mozart and Beethoven, who are the classical equivalents of the Beatles and James Brown. Nobody is going to honor the Backstreet Boys in 200 years. I want to hear some of the more ordinary pieces, to know what I could expect if I walked into an 18th century ballroom which had hired musicians to entertain the guests. Is there a repository of recordings of these lesser know pieces? I want to hear the 18th century equivalent of the Backstreet Boys or Nikki Minaj.

Why was Mozart so financially unsuccessful in his life? Was it poor money management, or is there evidence that the court and music establishment of Vienna did their best to make sure that his operas and other works did not become popular?

I am mostly getting this from the 1984 movie "Amadeus", but I am just wondering if there is a grain of truth to it? If not, what is the true story of Mozart?

Is the amount of fanatical Japanese soldiers in WWII portrayed accurately in movies and TV shows?

Hi all. I've been playing a lot of World at War and watching The Pacific for no reason in particular and in both of them Japanese soldiers are shown to be loyal to the emperor to their dying breaths, killing even those they tried to help them after they were wounded in battle.

A lot of American troops seem to be just average people as you'd expect. A lot of them haven't seen combat and will throw up before, during or after a battle, but Japanese soldiers seem unfazed by the gore and ruin that surrounds them and have no problem fighting even after losing limbs by blowing themselves up with grenades. But were they all like that? I mean I figure some of them had to be just average kids, especially considering how Japan had like literally no army towards the very end of the war. I just find it hard to believe they'd all be that undyingly loyal.

In the German federal election of July 1932 NSDAP won 37.27% of the popular votes. In November of the same year they got 33.09% of the vote. I.e they got more than 2 million less votes. What was the reason for this fall?

Why did Napoleon lose the Sixth Coalition War?

Hey guys, I'm writing something for a class right now and am struggling to think of a comprehensive answer. It's focused on the War of the Sixth Coalition (1812-1814) and so far I have the reasons for Napoleon losing/Coalition winning as:

  1. the invasion of Russia in 1812 - butchered the army and was never really able to recover
  2. Napoleon refused terms with the Allies, French population were sick of war
  3. Contemporary Coalition generals learned from Napoleon's tactics and used them against him

How are these sounding? Usually I'm pretty good at getting a solid argument but I feel like this is a complex topic that I could use some advice on Cheers!

Why weren't there empires in the middle ages like there were in ancient times?

Why is history from ancient times filled with empires that spanned huge areas, last centuries and able to field armies in the hundreds of thousands, but the middle ages seems to be full of smaller/shorter lived kingdoms and states? (in Europe and surrounds at least)
