Like to use the public bath, or to use one of those outdoor toilets with a sponge (I assume you paid) to restaurants and such. What were typical costs and incomes for the citizens.
Also maybe an aside, how did senators make so much money?

I came across an controversial Facebook post regarding his death and decided to do some research. Was he a ruthless colonialist or a brilliant navigator?

I've been looking for some raw source material for a while. All I've seen so far when looking for specific speeches is short excerpts from documentaries or videos with flashy cinematics and dramatic music. Only certain speeches are online in full length.
I assume the raw source material must be saved somewhere. Is this publicly available?

This weekly feature is a place to discuss new developments in fields of history and archaeology. This can be newly discovered documents and archaeological sites, recent publications, documents that have just become publicly available through digitization or the opening of archives, and new theories and interpretations.

I'm sorry if this is not the right subreddit for this, but I've been reading up on him and I keep finding conflicting dates of birth. Some say 1474, others 1484. Where did this inconsistancy come from?

"This war is not against Hitler or National Socialism but against the strength of the German people, which is to be smashed once and for all, regardless whether it is in the hands of Hitler or a Jesuit priest."
Somebody posted that quote in a discussion and I find it weird, but can't find any credible source for it. Does someone know the context for this or can confirm that Churchill indeed said this?

Everyone has heard about the Soviet rapes and massacres in occupied Germany, but they also committed large amount of crimes in other countries. For example, in Yugoslavia the politician Diljas complained about crimes committed by the Red Army. In Hungary for example, one witness says "During the siege of Budapest and also during the following weeks, Russian troops looted the city freely. They entered practically every habitation, the very poorest as well as the richest. They took away everything they wanted, especially food, clothing and valuables... every apartment, shop, bank, etc. was looted several times". In China too mass atrocities were committed.
So my question is why did the red army commit so many war crimes in occupied areas, especially compared to other allied armies? Was this allowed in pratice by Soviet Command? Did this have to do with the soldiers' peasant upbringing?

This map seems, for the most part, to be fairly accurate. At first glance at least. But there are two very notable exceptions. The first, up north, is the lake straddling the border of West New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
The second is the giant "Apalache" lake down south. A couple of links from the page the map is on showed me that the lake was reported by John Lederer, but I'm not sure why. Were blank spaces on maps just filled in with wishful thinking? The "Arenosa Desert" doesn't seem to be much of a selling point for the New World.
I haven't really been able to find anything on the lake up North and it makes less sense to me. This map is from 1714 and the lake doesn't appear to be too far north of Philadelphia.

Did the Black Death stop the fighting or did the English or French take advantage of the situation?

I've heard this claim a lot, and whilst I can believe it, I have my doubts.
If it is true, how much of it can be attributed to obviously high sentiment of nationalism across Europe, and the assertion that the war would be the antidote to rising international unrest and tensions (blissfully unaware of just how brutal the war would be)?
Also, I am quite curious of any major differences in sentiment from different nations
Thank you:)

Was there an ancient civilization without gods, rituals and superstitious beliefs?

I had imagined, no doubt to the similarity of the cultures, that they took after the Greeks, not so far as to accept pedastry, but with a leniency or unconcerned attitude towards homosexuality in general. But I've read that it was uncommon and discreetly done for fear of derision, at least. Another of a story of a soldier being awarded the civic crown by the infamous Marius for killing an officer who, as it was put in Life of a Colossus by Adrian Goldsworthy, "had tried to force his attentions on him", assuming that the officer's rank might forcibly persuade the soldier into acquiescing, I imagine. Of course this was all in the late republic era, but was this always the case, even through its later years as an empire? I understand sexuality has a changed meaning two-thousand-some years ago, but a male and male relationship.

Originally I read reports that cited a belief that the Confederate artillery bombardment had a greater effect on the union lines than it actually incurred, but considering the accuracy, weight, and consistency of return fire from the union lines, including Alonzo Cushing's Battery A (reduced to two guns before the final 100 yards of pickett's charge), how is it possible to make such a glaring mistake? Some random sources I have seen take the stance that Longstreet opposed the charge, is the responsibility for the event squarely on Robert E Lee, who had previously only made the rare tactical error and never one of such devastating failure?

Imagawa led a force of about 25,000 men, where as Oda Nobunaga emerged victorious with only about 2-3,000. This victory catapulted Oda into historical significance. From what I understand, Imagawa never saw him coming. Oda used his knowledge of the terrain and information from his scouts to perform a sneak attack on his enemy's main camp, resulting in Imagawa's death. As said in the topic, can this be considered what we would call today, "Guerrilla Tactics"? This is my first post here, please be gentle if this question is silly. Sengoku Jidai is one of my favorite periods in history.

Charming, sophisticated and above all ingenious - the types of characters who fund lavish and interesting lifestyles by pulling off lucrative heists now and again. Was there ever a man or woman who inspired these characters in one way or the other, or is it purely the creation of authors and filmmakers?

I enquired about this on Bad History on a free for all Friday last week, and I'm still curious about this. Im asking this under an alt as my main account has a regrettably stupid and juvenile joke of a username that would probably go against this subs rules. Anyway, onto my question. Wikipedia can be full of nonsense a lot of time on certain articles, and I think I have came across some bad history there the other day, but I am not sure because I know next to nothing about this particular area of history, So i,ll just quote what I came across in the Wikipedia article for The Irish and German Mercenaries revolt in Rio De Janeiro in 1828.
Heres this one bit I am wondering about "Rio de Janeiro's black slaves and the Irish did not get along. Taunts of 'white slaves' when the Irish first landed escalated into individual fights, then large scale brawls, and finally, into murders by roving bands on both sides in the dark streets ". Any record of this Irish on Black race war in Brazil happening?

Hello, I am looking for sources on the Pre-Colombian history of Cuba, whether in book form or article form. So far I have only found this: https://www.amazon.com/archaeology-Pre-Columbian-Latin-American-Studies/dp/082293955X
I'm probably going to buy that book, but can anyone point me to so other sources? Thanks!
