I was driving on some sloppy, muddy dirt roads after we got some snow melt this weekend, and it occurred to me that snow sled travel may have been easier under certain circumstances as compared to wagon wheels. Was there any sentiment of this among travelers before automotives, that the snow was a welcomed sight because of the ability to travel smoothly by horse and sled over it, as opposed to a bumpy trail by wheel?
Were there any routes that were impassable by wagon in the summer, or too difficult, that became passable by horse and sled in the winter?

Lyrics in question:
Let's take this moment to establish a precedent
First of all, sir, we won't involve you in this
Imagine this debate with all of congress, it's ruinous
I'll reassure the South, 1808 is still the year
That was agreed upon
That buys us time and assuages fear
I'll tell the North that on January 1st
Of that year, we'll ban importation handling the worst
Once I get all this agreed upon, I'll pick up a pen
And introduce a motion never to discuss this again

Did any of our ancient ancestors have a meat free diet? If so, where and why? If not, what would your chances of survival have been if you didn't eat meat back in cavemen times? Was it essential or could you have got by on just the nuts and berries?

More interested in the "when" part of the question and how the mix of different languages and accents formed what we know today as "American".

I'm currently reading The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by William L. Shirer. He frequently refers to "top secret" telegrams being sent. How did something like this work? Would it simply be encoded, or where there special wires erected specifically for classified information transmission? It just seems like such transmissions could be easily intercepted to me.

I'm a reader of Golden Age detective fiction, and Russian refugees and pretend refugees, often aristocrats, show up now and then. Do we know how many Russians escaped the Revolution, and how? Did many poorer people escape or was it mostly the aristocracy? Did the refugees have problems with bureaucracy in settling in new places?

My mom just got some stuff from my great grandma including a WWI uniform, some papers, and this bible my great great grandfather took into battle. In the bible was this paper.
It's in French and I can only really make out the regiment and "prisoner".
Thank you in advance!

We found a souvenir pin in my grandmother's belongings and haven't been able to find much information other than a vague overview of these festivals.
From the little bit of searching I've found, it looks like they took place all over the country and these pins were pretty similar despite the location. Was it a traveling festival or something that each city/state held on their own?

Sorry if this seems like a dumb thing to ask, I was redirected here from /r/nostupidquestions.

I remember one of the locations I visited in France had this story of how a round from a US battleship soared 30km and hit the actual artillery piece in the gun battery. Instead of exploding and destroying the artillery with its crew, the round was a dud, so it destroyed the gun piece then continued on to puncture the wall behind it, instantly killing everyone in the sealed communitions room. Then it broke through the other side and traveled ~1km further.
I believe this was at one of my stops in Normandy, my trip was years ago with a whole lot of stops so my bad memory has meshed a lot of it together.
I've tried searching for this a couple times before but have not been able to find anything on it.
Sorry if this is in the wrong subreddit, I'm rather sleep deprived and the rules of r/history directed me to here for asking questions about specific parts of history; but I might be asking for something too specific.

The Bible , Dante's Divine Comedy, Ovid's Metamorphoses, Homer's Iliad, etc.
Was it only because it was easier to memorize, or was "normal" prose frowned upon? Verse nowadays seems confined to music, theater and poems. What is an explanation for such change?

I am curious as to how did Herodotus, Thucydides and Sima Qian gather their sources to write history. Did they rely on oral and written sources and did they search for physical and archaeological evidence like modern historians do today?

How were any of these concerns addressed? And additionally, what changes happened infrastructurally post-war to allow the military to begin sustaining greater numbers of active duty personnel?

In the Bible, the Patriarchs Abraham and Jacob repeatedly (3 times) go to Egypt to buy food and sojourn there when there is famine in Canaan. Is there any evidence that such a thing happened?

Catherine Marie O'Sullivan, in Hospitality in Medieval Ireland, quotes a canon called De Iectione Eclesie Graduum ab Ositio as having a line which says that a 'superior prince or scribe or an anchorite or a judge' (excelsum prinipem aut scribam aut anchoritam aut iudicem) should never be refused hospitality.
How could it have come about that an anchorite might be in need of hospitality? My understanding is that anchorites are defined by staying in one place.
