Hello to everyone!
I'm interested in reading about japanese history (in general, but more specifically the Muromachi to Meiji periods) and I would like suggestions about good books that cover those periods and/or take a quick glance of the history of Japan. Taking a look to the bibliography the subreddit has provided I haven't found anything that covers what I'm searching for. I searched the internet and have some reads already on the list but I would like more info nonetheless. Any suggestion is welcome and thanks in advance for your help.

In my experience, the US constitution is treated almost as a holy book by a lot of Americans. As far as I know, no other state has had such a reverance and faith-like believe in it's constitution or any other form of secular law.
How did this reverance come to be? Are/were there any other nations with such a intense belief in their laws?

Hello! I teach social studies and bible at an alternative high school for at risk youth. We're an underfunded and private school, which is a blessing and a curse - I don't have a pre-approved curriculum to follow (thus, not limited in what I can teach), but I am also constantly looking for free resources.
I found some great resources on the Cuban revolution/ missile crisis/ bay of pigs and the Haitian revolution here on reddit that were big hits in my classes. I'm looking for more of the same now!
I'm starting a unit on Vietnam in my US History class after the holidays. I'm looking for links to pdfs of primary/secondary sources, DBQS, class simulations, or anything else anyone thinks is helpful/ wishes they had learned in high school.
Thanks!

I'm interested in how certain groups fit into the immediate aftermath of concentration camps and mass killings. Presumably a large percentage of people in concentration camps were German citizens. Did many of them flee from Germany once liberated from concentration camps? Did they try to reintegrate and face further persecution?

When did concepts like sine, cosine, and tangent, with all of their inter-relations, enter into it?

This week, ending in November 24 2016:
Today's thread is for open discussion of:
History in the academy
Historiographical disputes, debates and rivalries
Implications of historical theory both abstractly and in application
Philosophy of history
And so on
Regular participants in the Thursday threads should just keep doing what they've been doing; newcomers should take notice that this thread is meant for open discussion only of matters like those above, not just anything you like -- we'll have a thread on Friday for that, as usual.

As far as I've learned, The Futhark (Norse alphabeth) was the first form of writing in Scandinavia, and was developed before the norse had any contact with other peoples.

Hello! How is everyone doing today? Hope all is well for you :-)
Recently, I realized my understanding of Irish history is poor, at best. I'm French and Irish history is pretty much never taught in our schools (likewise for much of non-French history). Why Irish history now? Well, I don't know, I got curious I suppose.
Here's what my Irish history looks like for now:
As you can see this is all very rough and probably inaccurate. I wish I had a few books pertaining to Irish history from the pre-historic periods to nowadays, quality scholarly books, yet able to synthetize things a bit. I can read a few hundreds pages but not 6,000 in my little spare time :(
I looked on the FAQ and found no recommendations on Irish history.
Does anyone have a reading list? :)

So what did the kings and high nobility wear in battle or keep for that purpose? I know in the high Middle Ages there was armor specifically used by kings, but I have no idea what,
A. It looked like B. Who made it (were there blacksmiths that specialized in this?) C. What happened to the armor after the ruler died
Feedback on Europeans would be amazing, but if there is something from other cultures I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you for your help.

I understand that this was a way for the USA to force Japan to surrender. But then, why drop two bombs? Shouldn't one have been enough to send the message? Especially since the use of atomic weapons is a very questionable, unethical choice to make in the first place.
