Did Ernesto Che Guevara execute homosexuals? Did the Cuban Communist government really believe gays were Capitalist infiltrators or collaborators?

I've heard this claim disputed, and referred to as a CIA lie. The amount of partisan writing on this topic makes it difficult for a layperson to understand the facts.

How strong were bows (non crossbows) in Medieval Europe and the Near Middle East?

When I watch movies about medieval Europe, or Asia around this time for that matter, we see that the punch of a bow and arrow is enough to kill a grown man at once. They can penetrate armor, go straight through the bodies of soldiers, knock people to the ground, etc. However when I watch documentaries of hunters in different tribal, and less-tribal societies, in the modern world, in Africa for example, we see that their arrows will barely stick in the body of an animal and they need to either pepper the animals with arrows or use poison to kill it, and even then it takes them often hours of chasing the wounded animal to catch it. So my question is how much is the strength of the medieval bow and arrow a dramatization of Hollywood? Was it more alike the bows of these current tribal societies? Or did the 'superior' technology of the medieval Europeans give them extremely strong bows?

Prior to women's suffrage in the US, were there actual prohibitions against women holding office? Were there ever any women who campaigned for office?

My thinking is that just because society didn't allow women to vote, it doesn't necessarily follow that there could never be a woman qualified for office, either appointed or elected. And if there were no specific prohibitions against it, surely at some point some ambitious woman in the country would at least throw her hat in the ring.

I assume that during the height of the women's suffrage movement there would have been many women pushing the bounds of political expression and participation. I am interested in that, but moreso in earlier American history.

In the 18th-19th century, was the idea of a woman in office (elected or appointed) unthinkable to people? Would the possibility be viewed as a peculiarity, or would people find it offensive? Did any male politicians ever discuss the qualifications or a particular woman?

Should there be more attention given role did the Hakka people played in Chinese history?

Hakka or partial Hakka people like Sun Yat Sen and Deng Xiaoping played a significant role basically every major event in modern history of China even though Hakka population is incredibly miniscule compared to the rest of the country. Despite this it seems like many people don't even knows what Hakka is and its never really mentioned in Western textbooks.

Why did Julius Caesar attack the Helvetti?

I recently read the Wikipedia article on Julius Caesar's Gallic wars, and I had trouble understanding his motives for attacking the Helvetti. It seemed to me that they were simply looking to migrate west and had even secured permission from neighboring Gallic tribes to do so. Can someone explain the background to this historical event?

Were there changes in laws or the US economy that enabled the rise of professional athlete's salaries in the 1970's?

I think what I'm asking follows the 20+ yrs rule, but I'm not sure about the 70s versus 80s. I was born in the 70s and it seems like during my early years is when MLB, NFL, NBA, etc. players' salaries became disconnected with standard of living. Do historians point to one or a few developments that account for this?

What were the purpose of the tethered balloons during WWI and WWII

Hey there, long time lurker first time poster. I've been playing a lot of Battlefield 1 and I've also watched Saving Private Ryan thus weekend and I noticed the tethered balloons in both settings.

What were their intended purpose? Were they decoys? Did they provide a tactical advantage? What were the logistical requirements for them? Any limitations?

Sorry if this was already covered.

Of the original Thirteen Colonies, all the Southern colonies were named after royalty, but none of the Middle or New England colonies were. Why?

And the Middle and New England colonies are largely named after English places. Why is that, too?

Given that the American Revolution was basically a secession from the British Empire, how did the Union argue morally or ethically that the South should not be free to secede from the United States.

Obviously there is the moral issue with slavery, but it seems hypocritical to me that the North did not allow the South to secede from the United States when the United States was the result of an secession in the previous century.

I am not sympathetic to the South, but I am curious if Lincoln or the Union had an ethical and moral reasoning against state self-determination. In Canada, each province is allowed to declare independence if a majority wants it, but as far as I know the US states cannot.

How can you determine if a book is a quality source?

Hi guys, I'm not sure if this is the right sub to ask, but I'm currently writing a paper on the League of Nations and I've only found one book "The Guardians" which has a lot of positive reception from many people which technically qualifies it as a quality source which I can cite from. However, I also have a few other books that do not have any sort of reviews apart from the publisher itself. How can I determine whether I am reading a quality source or not? The prof requires I cite at least 3 quality books, but the League of Nations is a topic that has not been covered or studied extensively, thus I am not able to find books that have been peer-reviewed. Can somebody please help me out? Thanks in advance.

For what reasons did railways not become the main form of transportation?

I assume trains are in general faster and a more reliable form of transport, whereas transport by road make destinations more accessible. I also understand that railways became mainstream much later than roads, but for what reason did we choose accessibility over reliability/speed?

What did the European hunter-gatherers hunt after the end of last glacial period?

I'm interested if there is a list of animals hunted by mesolithic/early neolithic hunters in different regions of Europe. Most of all I'm curious about Pannonia and Balkans.

Also, how did these animals migrate, when, where and why. And did the hunters follow them in their sessional migration?

I'm trying to reconstruct a mesolithic/neolithic hunter-gatherer's lifestyle in my head. I hope I chose the right sub, if not, please let me know where could I ask the question.
